Eye & Cosmetic Surgery

On December 26^th I had a horrific incident that cause severe damage to my right eye. I went to UMC to which they did a catscan and showed that I had what they called optical fracture and a blowout. As per my discharge instructions I followed up with an opthamologist. Dr. carpenter has a very nice office, and a very friendly staff however he him could use a little bit of sympathy, understanding and education on how to speak to people. I asked Dr. Carpenter if I should follow up with my primary care doctor should I need additional pain management. His response was that the pain medicine I received from the emergency room should suffice until next week. I told him I was not sure if it would last until next week. His tone and body language changed completely and he told me to just hold on that he was finishing up my paperwork. I dropped the subject completely. I then asked him approximately when he thinks I would be able to return to work. In a condescending and seemingly offensive tone he responded, «You’re asking for pain medicine but you want to know when you can go back to work?». I do not understand how asking when he believes I can return to work is an issue. I have to notify my job how long I am expected to be gone as I have an obligation to let them know so they can make arrangements for the schedule. Dr. Carpenter’s remark and tone was uncalled for. I absolutely commend this doctor for not wanting to hand out pain prescriptions like they are candy. However, the fact is I did not even ask him for pain meds. In fact I asked him if I need to follow up with my primary care physician for pain management. My discharge instructions clearly state to ask this. I think that if he would have listened to what I was asking and not jumping to whatever conclusion he had in his mind this would have been a more pleasurable experience. I would have considered returning to him in the future for my health care needs. When someone is feeling as horrible as I’m feeling the last thing he or she needs is a cold doctor that jumps to conclusions and makes judgments without listening to what the patient is asking. All of these doctors that do not work closely with their patients and do not have compassion need to get a clue. They take an oath to help people. I left his office feeling worse than when I had arrived. He has many other reviews that he has horrible bedside manner and that he is not a pleasant person. I disregarded those reviews but boy do I wish I hadn’t.
