History

Established in 1962.

The first Zankou Chicken was opened in 1962 in the heart of Beirut, Lebanon. In 1984, Zankou opened its doors in Hollywood. Centered in the heart of America’s motion picture industry, Zankou attracted thousands of aspiring actors, writers, artists, and musicians with its delicious, inexpensive meals. In 1992, we opened in Glendale. By this time, Zankou’s fan base had risen to match its taste. The restaurant was heavily crowded on opening day, and the immense success of this branch led us to open further restaurants in Van Nuys, Anaheim, & Pasadena. With openings in West LA and Burbank, Zankou gave customers a glimpse into the restaurant’s future: where delicious, high quality, inexpensive meals are served amidst an elegant ambiance. We just opened our newest store in Sidewalk café on Glenoaks in the heart of Glendale, and we look forward to opening a store in North Hollywood in the community of Toluca Lake, just minutes away from Universal Studios this Spring.

Business Owner

Dikran Iskenderian has a Bachelor’s of Science in business administration with a Management concentration from Woodbury University. He also has a Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Woodbury University. He now attends UCLA Extension for a Professional Certification in marketing.

He manages day-​to-​day operations and much of the restaurants marketing, communications with media, menu design, advertising, and R&D. He is also involved with hiring new employees, scouting for new locations, and customer relations.

Yesterday was first time ever going to zankou. The food was a little overwhelming because I’ve never had that type of food and there was a lot of customers. The manager took time to go through the menu with me and gave me her suggestion of what I should order based on what I like. It’s was very nice of her to take the time even though it was crowded. I appreciated her help. Definitely would go again.

I don’t usually post these reviews but when I have to it’s either good or bad and this time it’s bad. First off I place my order walked up to the counter the lady at the register took my order while she’s talking other employees and other customers. She did not give me her full attention that’s probably why my order was wrong. So I place a to go order get home it’s totally wrong and call back and talk to the manager. Diana (the manager) gets on the phone first off does not apologize whatsoever then challenges me on what I have to say. Yeah the food is good here, but is it worth my $ 30 for two kabob plates? Absolutely not!!! I will not be returning back to Zankou chicken ever again especially the location on Riverside drive.

My fiancé and I came in tonight for some dinner placed an order to go with Diana. First off she wasn’t paying attention to use while we were placing our order, she kept looking around and talking to the other employees, RUDE! When I got home I noticed that my order was incorrect and very skimp! Did not look like it was worth $ 30. We have been going to the Burbank and Toluca location for 2 years, so we know how it should roughly look. I call Diana to explain to her what was going on and she keep challenging and basically tell me I was wrong. I felt very insulted and don’t think as a manager she handled the situation how it should’ve been handled. Diana and I were literally arguing over the phone. I like the food and the cook that helped me out after all this was awesome but the service Diana gave us tonight was not satisfying. I hope the owners are aware of the kind of people they have running their business. Especially me being a General manager at a restaurant. I know I wouldn’t have an employee treat their guests the way she did.

All I wanted to do was roll around in the dipping sauce after eating here. I’m pretty sure we got the schwarma wrap. It was like a hazy euphoric moment for me, so my memory isn’t real clear on the details. The women who rang up our order kept commenting on how beautiful my eyes were. I don’t know if those were genuine words or not, but I left feeling really flattered. We got in the car & after the first bite I couldn’t stop licking my lips. I don’t know if it was because I was so hungry or the food was just that good, but I devoured that little baby in about 3 seconds flat. Between bites my friend tried to slip a little munch of my wrap, but you better believe I slapped his hand away and did a dolphin on his ass («EH EH»). No one was going to come between me and my Zankou!!! Not now, not ever! All in all I would leave my religion for this place. This was my first experience at Zankou, and I can assure you it will not be my last.

Having grown up on the Original Zankou Chicken in Hollywood. The last couple of times I have eaten at Zankou I have been very disappointed. The flavor is not the same and the quality of the meat seems not to be the same either. I guess I need to take a ride down to Hollywood and try the OG to see if it’s only this location I have had a bad experience with or have all of them gone down the drain. What a shame! I guess the people giving the 4 and 5 stars never had the pleasure of eating at the Original Zankou in its hay day.

I am giving this place an extra star because it is so personally iconic, being one of the delicious discoveries I made when first moving to LA in 1997. It comes off pretty much like a mom-​n-​pop version of a fast-​food Armenian chicken joint trying to be like McDonald’s, only drenched in garlic. Coming from Chicago where Armenian food is less prevalent, Zankou was a revelation for my taste-​buds and my wallet. It is pretty cheap (but not dirt cheap — so plan on spending at least a ten spot for a full meal), and it is really yummy. The chicken is sometimes dry because it can sit for while after being cooked, but there is plenty of garlic sauce (or paste rather), and lots of red turnip pickles to moisten the mouth after chewing off a chunk of dry breast meat. And of course, a drink is a must because the bread is dry too.
Over all the ambiance in all of the Zankous is a little plastic and assembly-​line-​ish. But that feel of being a «broke college student who finally found a feast that he/​she can afford so who cares about the décor» is part of the charm.
Food wise, there are lots of places in town to get a meal like this, as I have discovered since 1997. Lots of places. But for me, Zankou is still the mother of them all.

How much do I like all things Zankou? I’m back from visiting my mom, dog, and sister for Thanksgiving, and I’m still daydreaming about the ‘signature’ garlic sauce, that’s how much!!!
I already reviewed the Pasadena Zankou elsewhere, so I’m going to skim through the food and just say it’s delicious and filling. If you’re looking not to do overdue it, go for the quarter chicken with tahini salad side OR a roasted chicken roll. (I’d stay away from the kabobs, not because they’re not good but because they take a long time to prepare for some mysterious reason. When I went here with Ryan Campbell (@oldmanbackagain), he waited forever!)
I went here with fellow Laker fan Tracy Martin, whom I met on twitter. Think everyone on social media is just some IRL psycho? Think again and try conversing for a few months before rushing to judgment.
Not sure where this Zankou falls in the Zankou family wars, but who cares — it tasted great. Read more on this sad struggle here:

Never had a bad meal here. The staff can be a little ambivalent, but the good food makes up for it. At least on my last couple of visits, they haven’t tried to get me to buy a side of felafel. That’s an improvement, IMO.

Zankou Chicken is just awesome. Whether or not this is the origin of the classic Palestinian Chicken episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, this chain puts out some equally memorable food. This location is in Toluca Lake near Burbank and is frequented by many workers from nearby movie studios.
This is an upscale quick service restaurant serving Middle Eastern food. They have rotisserie chicken and several beef and chicken kabobs along side several vegetarian options. I opted for their Chicken Tarna with excellent hummus and pita. I got some of their garlic spread, but the food was so flavorful I did not need it. Everything was fresh and delicious.
I really wish this chain was here in Sacramento. This is a really good place and should be more popular.

Oh man oh man. This Zankou is the best! Making a long experience short, they’re friendly staffed, cook their meals in exceptional times, and make delicious chicken tarna plates! One plate can feed like two people comfortably, but only one if your stomach is a black hole like mine.

Great chicken. My first time ever being in a Zankou Chicken. I was in my own world annihilating my plate like a beast. Everything went so well together. even those peppers which are usually too spicy for me but I ate all three of them. I’ll be back to try more things!

I’ve been to other Zankou locations and they don’t even compare. This location is simply the best!!!
I order the chicken kebab plate in a very certain way. These employees always cater to my requests and are always polite and helpful.
I have been a very frequent customer for over a year now, but just wanted to show my love and support for this amazing team! Keep being great!

Went over the weekend with some friends after working a Wellness Faire so it was late and we were hungry! The employees were super nice, it was spotless clean in there. Food was so good! Chicken cooked perfect, hummus and garlic spread. And the pitas were good too. I’ll be working in the area again in August and will probably stop back in.

This place is bomb! A good bomb. Food is always hot and fresh. Everything is made to order. The staff is beyond friendly and welcoming. The Kabob is always on point! I usually get the Combo with chicken and ground beef and its soooo good. It comes with this garlic sauce that they have and omg delish. The plates come with hummus and pickled turnips and a side of some delicious onions.
The interior is pretty modern and they keep it very clean. It’s very seldom I see a dirty table. They have alot of seating and outside patio seating as well. There’s usually alot of street parking and they also have a parking lot.

Great place for a quick lunch! I ordered a wrap and it’s a good size if you’re not super hungry. I love that they shave the meat off a giant skewer, and they put it in plain sight which makes the experience just that much more exciting.
The food itself wasn’t super duper impressive, but it was still good! The plates look really good too and includes a variety of different things, so I’ll probably try that if I come back. Prices are reasonable too!

It depresses me that Zankou passes for Lebanese fare in this city. Just another example of a highly-​acclaimed chain that leaves this girl scratching her head and wondering if the all the smog has given these Angelenos brain damage.
I ordered the Chicken Tarna plate, on recommendation, although the shawarma was teasing me softly, «Lizzz, Lizzzz, eatttt me.» They called my name and I took my tray of food to a booth with a ripped seat. Whatever, I was dining solo with the latest from Vanity Fair (the only women’s magazine with solid articles and toothy writers, trust.)
Chicken tarna platter — presented as strips of juicy chicken, a small greek side salad, two types hummus, and naan bread with a side cup of: something:. I say «something» because I expected it to be tzatziki sauce. It turned out to be a thick whipped garlic butter.
The two sides of hummus were both flavorful: one was a thicker consistency and quite bland, like the hummus you use with a side of veggies at a baby shower or potluck; the other hummus was thinner consistency and spicy, I used this one as a topping on the chicken. The chicken is pretty good, but the slow roasting that’s done on a skewer pretty much guarantees the meat will not be bad. I would’ve preferred a more traditional Lebanese experience with falafel, lamb and tzatziki.
I will probably be back to try the tabbouleh salad because I loves me some tabbouleh.
All in all a «meh» experience. Zankou is cute if you like fast food and a little ambiance.
