History

Established in 1990.

John Sudol Acting Studio’s mission is to provide on-​camera actors with an added advantage when auditioning. John understands the need and value of his work based on his own audition experience. Despite John’s extensive training, lead and guest-​star credits, and despite all the romantic language the director used, John was unable to give the one pivotal reaction requested. He left that audition frustrated but with the conviction to never let that happen again for himself or for other actors!

This Studio helps align what you feel with what you reveal to naturally create emotion on your face in a recognizable way, whether in the Commercial or Theatrical Class or a consultation for that important headshot. For the student unable to organically create an emotion, the John Sudol Acting Studio is the only studio of its kind that provides the on-​camera actor with the tools needed in any audition situation — to interpret anything and turn it into a real emotional reveal or reaction on demand.

I’ve been teaching acting for over 30 years. It was the years in casting that inspired my work in The Language of the Face. It was then I realized the hardest thing for the majority of actors to do was to come up with a real, recognizable reaction on demand.

For over the past 10 years, I’ve dedicated my life to studying and understanding the science we now have on emotions and how it applies to artistic expression. I’ve done this by studying the work of leading researchers in the field of emotions. This study has given me great insight to not only how we express emotion but the various reasons as to why some people may fail to do so.

Developing the Language of the Face and the classes that go along with it has been my quest and passion. I also keep busy publishing articles in trade papers as well as my blog on various topics including The Language of the Face, the craft of acting and raising the level of self-​esteem in actors.

You should take this class. During class each student gets constant and immediate feedback which is very helpful in learning to align your facially expressions with the emotion required for a scene. I like John’s way of teaching: he does not spend a lot of time lecturing but gets his students right into the act of practicing their skills, It’s better to be guided into immediate use of the concepts than listen to long winded explanations. John makes the class interesting and fun and you will be drawn into learning things that will really help your acting career. You will be able to put what you learn in class to immediate use during your next audition and then realize that you are glad to have taken that class with John!

John has really dissected the processes of acting and is brilliant at communicating them at a practical level to his acting students. He will tell what you need to do in observable behaviors to book jobs and portray characters. I definitely recommend taking his classes. He will surprise you with «aha» moments and walk you into deep and meaningful insights. The tools he will hand you will serve you forever in your acting craft.

Had an introductory session with John, He’s excellent. His ideas are very useful and he certainly knows how to teach them. As an actor you must be aware of what you want to communicate and know that it shows on your face. If it doesn’t show, no one knows what your trying to communicate and the audience is left out.

I am amazed that he is the only teacher I have heard that specializes in recognizable facial emotions. I attended his free seminar and realized how true his statements are. One example is,
It doesn’t matter what you think you are showing, the audience and casting director have to see it. So if we don’t know what we are communicating on our faces, then how can we expect to get cast for a role and repeat the same shot over and over.
I am excited to take his class as I see a real need for this class.

I found it helpful attending both seminars — «Nailing That Reaction Shot» and «Making Your Read Dynamic» — It was a great way to get acquainted with what John offers at his Studio.
I recently completed his 4 week course, «Making Your Read Dynamic» and found it an essential tool. I really appreciated that each class (at the beginning) is treated as an actual audition and our reads are taped. Afterword, the class views each others «audition» and from there, we simply work on the material at hand (ie., Covering every possible detail about the character (s)/scene/moments, etc.).
Watching not only myself, but my fellow actors was (is) very beneficial. It has given me more confidence at my auditions and what it is I need to do to give my read more of an impact.
I look at this experience as a gift that will take me further along in my career… thank you John.

I’ve attended two of John’s seminars now, one on «Nailing that Reaction Shot» and one entitled «Making Your Read Dynamic» and have taken away a lot from both of them. He understands the business as well as the art of acting, and approaches them both from his unique perspective as someone trained in facial recognition. He also has a book coming out soon which I am really looking forward to! The only downside is that he teaches his classes out of a private residence, which is more than a little bit creepy when you haven’t met him before. Of course, it turned out that everything was perfectly safe and legit. Overall, I would definitely recommend John’s classes!

A few years ago when I first came to California I was skeptical about anything or one asking for money in regards to my career. Through email I was invited to audit a class entitled, languages of the face. John made discoveries about me I never paid attention to! Opened my eyes to the other possibilities of discovering how to efficiently give the correct expression with the emotion to sell the «story.» I recently had the opportunity to grace his presence once again! I attended a new class about how to have the best of the best reads in auditions. He incorporates his knowledge of facial language with learning how to break down scenes thoroughly for the best dynamic read! Again I was highly impressed! Not only with his knowledge but his compassion for his students and willingness to help! Needless to say, I signed up for the 4 week class «The Dynamic Read» and will be attending another class for «Nail that Reaction!» I feel like with the knowledge taken away from this class I am already one step ahead of the game! I too was in the same boat you are. I am a young acting hopeful interested in taking my career into high gear. I came across John’s free seminar on ActorQ and am so grateful that I attended. John is truly a one-​of-​a-​kind teacher (seriously because he’s the only teacher in the US certified in facial recognition). At his seminar he gave a brief overview of what his class entails and although he didn’t give out the «meat» of his classes, he left me with enough information that already changed my approach on acting.
At the seminar, I expressed a desire to enroll in his class but worried about scheduling conflicts. He has been working on trying to accommodate a class time for myself and a few other prospective students with scheduling conflicts. He’s willing to go the extra mile for students, and I am grateful because I can say without a doubt that his class and knowledge is a great investment of time.

As someone who has had a lot of training in movement and voice it’s surprising how little the face and expressions are covered in many modern styles of acting and how important it is to everything else.
