Cakes are delicious. Whenever I buy one and bring it to someone’s house for dessert, the guests are very complimentary. Very friendly staff.

Scala Pastry has everything I’m looking for in an Italian bakery when I get that craving — taste, variety, and GREAT price. Rainbow cookies are my absolute favorite and they did not disappoint here!
I went a little crazy making a variety box that I could take on the plane with me back to Houston where I live now and the whole thing only cost me $ 8.00 for about 15 cookies.
I also love that there are special desserts and pastries available in case you are in the mood for that as well.

Their canoli is amazing. However I though it was a bit pricy for their pound of cookies which is $ 12 is you choose from the second refrigerator. The cookies were average but I guess it was pricy because it’s fresh made. I still want to try their bread so I will be back for that.

3Stars– Ordered to birthday cakes 1 with fresh strawberries and fresh bananas and the filling being custard, I did get the fresh strawberries but it was more of a «banana custard» the bread was good in a cake I like more bread than icing ratio (which I did not mention when I went there but called on a Friday to see if it could still be applied) Next cake was a tres leches with peaches and walnuts, that cake tasted horrible not tres leches at all the bread was dry not how a tres leches bread should be and just tasted eggy and it was more icing than cake.
4 Stars– for the inside appearance all the goodies are displayed perfectly and so much to choose from which could be overwhelming if you’re not sure what to get.

Love Scala. Hands-​down, the best Italian bakery outside the 5 boroughs. Bread, cookies, pies, cake, everything is awesome. The staff has always been friendly to me, so the Unilocalers who’ve complained must be the type that expect a transcendental customer service «experience» from bakery folk. Scala is a gem!

After eating Lebanese food for lunch I saw Scala Pastry located in the same strip mall complex and immediately had to check it out.
There was a plethora of breads, cakes, cookies, doughnuts, and pastries beautifully and cleanly displayed. Delicious smells of these fresh baked goods was strong and really tempting.
Gawking at the bounty of yumminess for what seemed like forever, I finally decided on the following items:
Rainbow cookies are not my type of thing, but my sister loves them and she said it was one of the best rainbow cookies she has eaten.
She remarked on how the jam (apricot in this case versus raspberry) was still very fresh and abundant.
Chocolate Almond Biscotti was nice and crispy/​crunchy with a pleasingly mild chocolate taste and fresh crunchy almonds. Upon getting home I tried two with a nice English black tea, and I was immediately happy.
The Raspberry Cheese pastry was quite different than what I was expecting (was expecting more of a Danish), as the pastry was a multi-​layered flakey pastry (similar to a Napoleon sans cream). Overall it was just okay.
I did not sample any of the apple pastries as they were purchased for each of my parents, but after speaking to them, both were quite happy with the sugar-​free apple pastry and apple turnover respectively.
Both remarked on how each pastry was not overly sweet and also the delicious buttery texture.
Very happy with my first experience with Scala Pastry and will definitely visit again when I’m in the area; especially have to try some of their elegant looking cakes!

I was new to the east coast and wanted to make an birthday cake order for my friend through telephone, the staff was not able to communicate properly hence I had to visit the store, store was not much clean looking, the staff was not friendly to recommend or suggest any good birthday cake, hence I have to make an order by my own choice because there were not stores available nearby, good thing was that cake was really tasty, keeping all things a side when it comes to taste it was good

Fantastic traditional bakery. Great bread and incredible cookies.
The rainbow cookies are the best I’ve found in all of New Jersey.

When I first moved to central nj I was blessed to have been put onto scala bakery
In 2000 there was little if any decent italian bakeries in the area. The goods are fresh and on par with my favorite bakeries in Brooklyn or Staten Island
Cannollis are top notch
My daughters love the cookies.
Their Italian birthday cakes are exceptional
Prices are quite reasonable
I don’t go as often as I know have Amici bakery in Monroe which is quite good as well and not to mention 5 minutes from my house.
Keep up the great work scala!

I have tried the baked goods from here several times with mixed feedback.
I had a black and white cookie ($ 1.75) and an éclair ($ 1). I thought the black and white cookie was costly for the size of the cookie, but the cookie was pleasant. It is tough to beat the combination of chocolate and vanilla. The éclair was average at best. The pastry to crème ratio was not ideal.
Will I go back? Most likely.

Love this place and love the awesome customer service. This place is FILLED with yummy goodness.

My three favorite Italian pastry shops of all time are:
1. Enrico’s in the Piassa neighborhood in Addis Ababa
2. Stella in North Beach in San Francisco and now
3. Scala in North Brunswick
Wow. We ordered a cake from here for our baby shower and it was delicious. I have to take a star away for the misplaced order and their misspelling my wife’s name! but the taste was something else. All the cookies and traditional pastries they had were also amazing and at $ 8 or $ 11 per lb well worth it.
Happy I found this place and I’ll be back!

In complete disbelief that some of the previous reviews are real…
Simple…this bakery does not bake fresh every day. They’re quite open about that as well. Who in their right mind would pay the same price for day old bread or baked goods?
I live right nearby and have been burned by this place enough times that I can’t blame anyone but myself. If a cake is baked on a Tuesday and is let’s say 10 $ is the same cake wort $ 10 2 or 3 days later?
This is not an authentic bakery. If you enjoy paying for high end product but eating low quality food this is your place.

Get cannoli anything from here. Even a day and a half after buying whatever treat with cannoli cream I purchased, it was good. Also enjoyed their Raspberry Linzer Tart.
One day I would like to try the cannoli cake they had, because why not!
Why three stars though?
I love bakeries, full of such random treats and whatnot. So when I walk in, yes it will take me a moment to figure out what the hell I want to get. I don’t appreciate the snobby girl behind the counter huffing at me, rushing me and rolling her eyes when I ask her what something is.

Don’t be deceived by the common place outside appearance– the inside is an oasis of Italian bakery delights! Every spare inch is full of fresh biscottis, cookies (including sugar free cookies), cakes, breads, etc. They taste as good as they look. The lady working there was very sweet and the prices are very reasonable. Will definitely be coming back here!

A traditional Italian bakery is hard to find in Middlesex County and a good one even more difficult. Growing up with the Hudson Street Pastry Shop and Foschini’s Bakery in Hackensack and Sorrento’s Bakery in Lodi, I’m not easily impressed.
A warm greeting by the young ladies behind the counter started off what would be a very good experience. After scanning the full cases and discussing options, we decided on biscotti, pignoli nut cookies, proscuitto bread, sfinge and a Hershey’s Kiss cupcake. Really a cupcake? Blame it on my son.
The biscotti, both vanilla and chocolate were excellent with the right crispness, nut ratio and flavor. Perfect with a cup of coffee. $ 11 a pound was a bargain. Same for the pignoli cookies which are my wife’s favorite. At $ 20 a pound they are not cheap but actually $ 4 – 5 less than most other bakeries. The proscuitto bread was a real treat. A slight peppery flavor complimented the saltiness of the ham. It went quite well with an alfredo pasta dish that evening. The Sfinge was to die for! Filled with cannoli cream, the doughnut like pastry was spot on. Brought me back to my childhood when they were available starting with Lent every year. And the cupcake. My son said it was quite good and better than most.
I liked that you could see into the back watching the bakers at work. The staff was friendly and efficient. Spied quite a few other items of interest so a return trip is already planned. This is the real deal. A traditional Italian bakery. If you’ve grown tired of grocery store baked goods and the limited selection of many area bakeries, Scala Pastry needs to be put on your short list.

I can’t say enough good things about this bakery!!! Being from Brooklyn, it’s like I’ve stepped back in time, walking into this store. If you’re from Brooklyn or have been to a Bakery there, you’ll know just what I mean. Tons of fresh cookies and pastries on display!
I was given a birthday cake from Scala and never tasted a cake so amazing. The following June, I ordered a cake for my boyfriends birthday. The compliments I received were mind blowing. Just as the cake was.
You can choose from a variety of cake flavors, icing options and fillings. We went with vanilla cake, German chocolate icing and cannoli and strawberry filling. Amazing!
They also are able to put photos on top of the cake, but you need to have the photo printed on edible «paper» at your local supermarket as Scala doesn’t have the capability to do so.
I promise you will not be disappointed with any item you buy here!

When I moved from Brooklyn to East Brunswick a few years ago, one of my biggest worries was having a good, reputable, Italian bakery nearby. I knew of Mendoker’s in Jamesburg and nearby Laffair in East Brunswick, but neither come even remotely close to anything you’d find in Brooklyn.
Then I happened to be driving through North Brunswick when I spied Scala Pastry. Having grown up in East Brunswick as a kid, I can remember people talking about the Scala family bakery. Could this be the same one?
You bet.
Located just a few miles from my house, Scala is the only bakery I go to if I’m doing the shopping. While I’ll admit I have often been surprised at the quality of baked goods at the Spotswood Shop-​Rite that everyone in East Brunswick strangely raves about so much, nothing there compares to the quality you get at Scala’s. Bread loaves, pastries, cookies, and cakes — Scala does it best. All baking is done right on the premises, and everything is always super fresh.
The bake shop itself is fairly small. I wish they had a bigger space where they could build out a café for dining in, because it would quickly become a destination space for locals. This is something I really miss about Brooklyn — being able to grab an espresso and a freshly-​filled cannoli, and watch 90-​year old Italian men and women whiling the day away. At Scala’s, it’s all business, all day long. Traffic is fast and furious in and out of the shop, and if you arrive later in the day, you risk coming in to bare shelves for some of your favorite items.
East Brunswick residents can take the short cut to Scala’s by zipping all the way down Church Lane. It’s closer than you think, and the quality is well worth the few extra miles. Definitely check them out if you have never been here.

Solid Italian pastry place. Bought a cake here and the birthday boy was not disappointed. The other thing I’ve had before that I thought was great was the cheese ring. The cookies look good but I’ve yet to have occasion to taste them. It’s a little difficult to get to.
I think I still prefer the cakes at Nino’s in Lawrenceville but for this area, this is probably one of the only decent bakeries.

We wanted to order a cake for my cousin’s birthday. I felt confident ordering from Scala after reading Alison H’s review. (Hi and thanks!) This bakery is an old school European bakery carrying so many sweets, treats, and cakes. Good service and friendly people. It’s located in the Maple Meade Plaza on 130.
I placed an order for a small round red velvet cake and picked it up on Christmas Day. It was so beautiful and my cousin really enjoyed it! They now accept payment by credit cards which is great! I might have to try their cannolis or cannoli cake next time!
