AOC Salon

When I started going to AOC 3 years ago and found Krystal, I stopped dreading having my hair cut for the first time since I was too young to understand what was going on. I have long curly hair and I can’t count the number of terrible haircuts I’ve had ranging from cutting off more than I agreed to to just flat out awful styles that would never work with curly hair and would require hours of styling to look good even if my hair were straight. And then I met Krystal, who was recommended to me by their receptionist when I asked for someone who knew how to handle curly hair. Since then, I’ve had regular hair cuts, no one needs to push me to get it cut or even make appointments for me because I’ve been avoiding it for so long.
My last hair cut, not only did I make sure she put my fantastic layers back to where they had been since I missed an appointment (something that was done so badly when I was a child that I swore I’d never allow layers again), I actually asked her to cut off more than she had originally suggested. I’ve also had her put highlights in my hair twice, the first time copper, this second time they’re golden because the previous layers had faded to that color. She chose the color both times and I love it. She also did such a subtle job of it that the highlights, while incredibly beautiful, look completely natural. I actually had someone insist that I must be lying when I told them I’d dyed my hair. I have the easiest hair of my life, I wash it, put one product in, scrunch and I’m done and my hair always looks amazing.
And to stress again, this is just one of their stylists, though I would never let another near me because of my inherent distrust of people with scissors near my hair, I’m sure the other stylists are very good. I hadn’t had a hair cut in nearly 2 years before I went to AOC because when I moved down here, I didn’t know anyone and I was terrified of yet another awful haircut. My hair grows slowly, bad cuts take forever to grow out. When I went looking, AOC had 5 stars with 480 reviews, so I took a chance because I was getting desperate. Now, I can smile and relax when I take off my glasses so she can wash and cut my hair. I know the result will be beautiful.

I was in town visiting friends and decided to stop in for a haircut and am so happy with it! My stylist was Amy and I absolutely loved her! She was super professional, funny and personable; she definitely made my whole experience amazing. Staff was so nice and the décor was really cool! I definitely recommend checking out AOC!

I saw Shannon. I had been wearing my hair red for many years, and decided it was time for a change. Shannon colored and foiled my hair. It is now a nice, warm light brown with faint highlights. I can’t give them 5 stars because my haircut is uneven and isn’t what I wanted. The salon itself was nice, although I don’t think what I got was worth $ 200.

I am very particular with my hair. It took me four tries to find a salon I liked at a good price when I moved to Seattle from NY two years ago. Needless to say I was so nervous about finding a good salon when I moved to VA. I was pleasantly surprised with AOC and so happy that I found my new salon on the first try. Amy was my stylist and she did a great job. The cut is exactly what we talked about first and the blow out was very sleek. I was very happy with the end result and booked my next appointment right then and there. Looking forward to my next cut. Would recommend to anyone.

I was only in town for a week and needed to get my hair done. Went to AOC and got partial highlights and a cut by Emily. She was fantastic! Best hair cut and color I’ve had in a long time and on top of it she was incredibly sweet and engaging and really listened to what I was wanting. Great experience – Thumbs up.

I absolutely love AOC salon! They make me feel welcome whenever I come in for appointment. All the staffs are very friendly and I love that they offer you complimentary coffee, tea, or pink lemonade Candace did an amazing job with my hair. It’s definitely my favorite hair salon in Norfolk and I believe they just opened up a new location at Hilltop, VB. I recommend this place to all of my friends. I love it!

I had a terrible experience at AOC Salon. Krystal cut my hair and put a bunch of short choppy layers in my long fine hair. It looked awful and took over a year to grow out. Save your time and money and go to Josef’s Hair Salon. Josef does a great job!

I had my hair cut by Greg today, he was absolutely phenomenal! I had my hair butchered at another salon a couple days ago and was in desperate need of someone who could fix my terrible hair do. I called AOC after seeing them on Unilocal and all the great reviews they had, and was recommended by the receptionist that I should get an appointment with Greg.
My experience was fantastic from the second I walked in, the salon is cozy and smells wonderful, the staff is so friendly and considerate, and Greg was on time with my appointment… I am a military brat and being in time is a big deal to me. The consult with Greg was great; he was honest with what should be done to fix my hair and told me exactly what he was going to do. He was so gently and methodical from the shampoo to the cut to the blow dry. My hair looks gorgeous and astronomically better than it did when I walked in. I have already gotten so many compliments and I am so thankful to Greg for his amazing work and being able to fit me in on such short notice!
I very highly recommend this salon and Greg. My hair cut is worth every penny!

Awesome place. Great, chill music like Jack Johnson helps you relax a lot. Along with the great customer service and complimentary drinks! This place actually cares and will help you make your decision so you look good leaving. Sabrina was awesome, really caring and is great with hair, men and women! He did an absolutely fantastic job; HIGHLY recommend Greg. Like previous posters that have come before me, I too agree that everyone at AOC is so professional and friendly. Usually salons can get a bad wrap for being «too trendy» or «too snooty,» but not AOC. Everyone was more than welcoming and not once did I feel out of place or uncomfortable. It will be my go to salon here in VA, with Greg as my go to guy.
I usually get very anxious about haircuts/​styling/​salons, so much so that I hardly ever book myself an appointment. I’ve had experiences in the past so traumatic that I’m like a cat hanging from the curtains at the thought of having to cut my hair. My hair was looking wild and out-​of-​control (think lady Tarzan… literally), so I figured, I needed to bite the bullet and find myself a salon. I noticed that AOC was highly rated and reviewed so I decided to take a chance. I’m SO glad I did. When I walked in the receptionist asked if I’d like something to drink — tea, coffee, water, etc. I was promptly greeted by Greg at my appointment time where we discussed what I’d like done (low maintenance and enough length that I could still rock a ponytail if need be). I was in and out in less than an hour — shampoo, cut and style all for $ 56 (not including tip… but please tip your stylists. It’s a must)!! AND I wasn’t pressured or constantly being upsold to buy products (some places will try to upsell you up the wah-​hoozy to buy products almost as if you’re at pushy car dealership). All in all, PHENOMENAL experience!
TIPS for those of you who are curious or first timers:
–They have a private parking lot so don’t fret about having to parallel park
–You DON’T need an appointment BUT call in advanced to ask if they have any openings — you don’t want to have to play the sit and wait game (I called a few hours ahead day of and asked if they had any openings)
–During the holiday season Nov/​Dec time frame they get VERY busy, so you’ll want to call ahead at least 4 WEEKS in advance!
–Go in with an open mind; the staff is very knowledgable and knows what they are doing… they want you leaving happy! :)

I just recently moved to Norfolk, so at first I was a bit nervous about where to go to get my hair cut. Nevertheless, I chose a GREAT spot. They were very professional, the atmosphere was very stylish but not too «chickish,» and everyone was very welcoming!
I had the awesome opportunity to get my hair cut by Candace Pollard! She is very beautiful, very friendly, and did such an awesome job at walking me through what she was about to do with my hair. Everything that I had expressed to her that I wanted or didn’t want, she totally heard me out and followed through with it! I loved that about her because I have often had many people who end up just doing their own thing on my hair after I have expressed certain things that I like or don’t like.
My haircut was a little expensive but totally worth it! You get what you pay for! I have long hair so $ 52 for a wash, hair cut, and to get it blow dried was not bad at all!
I can definitely say that I have found the salon that I plan to continue to go to for future hair appointments!

Both my wife and I had our hair cut here and are looking forward to going back. It has a comfortable vibe that instantly puts you at ease. I have long hair and am always worried about someone screwing it up (hence the need to find AOC). Summer was very friendly, asked a few questions to make sure she understood what I wanted, and then went to work. Within 20 minutes, I was done and waiting for my wife. It was awesome.
Greg cut my wife’s hair and he did a great job; she was very happy and impressed with him.
We believe we have finally found a salon that both of us are comfortable with.

I am so excited that I have found my salon in Norfolk! My friend suggested this salon and Morgan specifically, since she has been seeing Morgan for a good while.
Morgan was so friendly and helped me through all the tough choices during my haircut. I have to say, although I think I’m more low-​matinence, there’s probably more pressure for that. I often want a good haircut and don’t want to do much afterwards. I like a haircut that will last me for a few months and I do little more than apply a few products and air dry most days. I have VERY thick wavy hair. Morgan helped me figure out the layer I want with the little to do most day style I like.
And my hair is awesome.
It took about an hour for a cut and blow dry and I’ll keep it as pretty as Morgan left it for as long as I can.
I highly recommend this salon and Morgan to anyone, and I can’t wait to go back and make this place my regular salon.

Used there online appointment booking option, no call back, no email, no follow up, no well nothing… sooooooooo no business or future business; the least they could do is respond to the request versus ignoring it. What’s the point of advertising you have online booking if you don’t utilize it to assist customers?

I think I’ve finally found my go to salon in Norfolk. After trying out several other places with disastrous results, AOC salon is exactly what I’ve been looking for. I made an appointment here after taking some suggestions from a few friends, and looking at the Unilocal reviews for each. My appointment (which was incredibly easy to make online) was with Elizabeth. I was placed with her because when making the appointment, I wrote in the notes section that I needed someone who was good with blonde hair. My hair at the time was this ridiculous two toned of a sort of weird dingy platinum on the bottom and a even weirder strawberry type blonde on the top, with about an inch of my natural dirty blonde roots. This was all because of the last salon disaster I had, which is a whole other review. So when I came in to see Elizabeth, my only goal for her was that she manage to get my hair all one shade of blonde and looking natural and pretty. I really wanted something along the lines of a light beige blonde, which is close to my natural hair color. The previous salon I had gone to told me that this color was just too hard to get and it wasn’t doable… which is just ridiculous. Elizabeth was so wonderful and sweet. She listened to everything I was saying, and then consulted with another stylist to ensure that I got the very best hair color. She was also extremely helpful when I asked for her opinion about freshening up my cut, since I felt my hair was looking a little sad. In the end, she gave me the PERFECT color. It was exactly what I was looking for. She also gave me a really cute cut, and made me feel like my hair actually had a style to it! I’m incredibly happy with Elizabeth, and I know i’ll be back to see her in the future.
Note: The ONLY reason I gave this salon 4 stars was because I did find it to be a little pricey. I’m not sure that I’ve ever paid that much before. BUT, they did fix my awful color, and I’m willing to pay that much if that’s what it takes to actually get my hair done right around here.

What do you do when your sister does your hair but she lives 800 miles away? You have her find you a Davines salon in the 757. After my sister met some of the girls from AOC, she informed me that I had to go see them. I made an appointment with Jess for a week later. She is one of the Davines educators for the salon. I felt confident with my sisters recommendation, and was excited to see her in about a week.
I walked in, filled out a client sheet and then was quickly introduced to her. We sat at the chair and discussed what I was looking to do. Since I normally just entrust my sister to do whatever, I told her when I had it last cut and colored and that I wasn’t looking to go crazy, just make it look a little more summery. She told me what she thought, I agreed and we got to it.
Let me suggest not being sunburned, not eating or having a headache before doing your hair. These combos make for a very long session. Totally not Jess’s fault, but I prob should have eaten before coming.
A few hours later, she washed my hair, trimmed and dried it. I was super happy with the outcome. It was everything she promised it would be. And the best part is that the upkeep for it is minimal. (My fav part) I’ve gotten tons of compliments about my hair color!
I would totally suggest you come to AOC salon! And I look forward to checking out their newest location at Hilltop once it opens. Though they’re about the same distance from me. Jess is a gem and I look forward to my next appointment with her.

The BEST local salon in Norfolk! AOC is the only place I will go to get my hair cut, and I have loved each and every cut/​color I have received there over the last three years. Jessica and Rebecca are my stylists, and they are beyond wonderful-​both as stylists and individuals! They are incredible in regards to styling/​tips/​color suggestions, and each time I go, its like catching up with old friends and an absolute treat-​I always walk out feeling like a million bucks (without paying that much at all!). GO HERE, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!

Took my boyfriend to get a «cool» gentleman’s, uppercut. Once again, Greg did not disappoint! The entire day I could not stop complimenting him on his awesome do! Looks like AOC has gained yet another loyal customer!

AOC Salon was amazing, to say the least. They were so kind and professional about every aspect of their business. From offering coffee and other beverages to even offering doughnuts, and just simply asking how our day has been, they were extremely attentive and professionally courteous.
The reason for our visit was for my girlfriend to get her very long hair cut, donated to charity, and have what was left styled. They did an amazing job! She loves her new look. :)

Just did my hair at AOC salon with Summer and can’t wait to write a review. She did an amazing job. She talked me through and suggested the color and I loved it. I wish I have taken the before picture but hey after is the proof. I’ve never been happier.

Wow! I have very long hair and am VERY picky about which salons I visit. After living in the Virginia Beach area for over 15 years, I can honestly say that I am VERY impressed with AOC. Everything about this salon exceeded my expectations from start (booking my appointment), to finish (walking out with my beautiful hair). The pictures listed on their Unilocal are real, they are that great! I highly recommend to others! Sincerely can’t say enough to share my positive experience.

LISTEN UP PEOPLE., THIS SALON IS NOT WORTH IT!
As promised in my last review, I was going to update on how the second visit went… WELL, the second visit didn’t happen. Less than a week prior to my apt ON DEC 10^th, I had a message from the salon owner herself to cancel because of a «conflict». I was unsure what that meant, so when I called back and spoke to someone else… they told me that it was because of my review!!! He stated that Jessica, the girl I was scheduled with felt uncomfortable, and that the owner herself wanted to be the one doing my hair. OOOOKAY fine, I asked when I could be rescheduled for and he couldn’t offer me anything for 5 more weeks! UNACCEPTABLE. It’s not only the holidays, but probably one of the hardest times to get a salon appt… and I KNOW that they KNOW that. Upset, but not upset with the person on the phone, I asked him if he could understand my frustration… and he agreed. He stated he would have the salon owner herself call me the next day to talk with me about possibly fitting me in. COOL. … And I waited,
The next day, I get a phone call… and I wish I remembered her name, but eh. it’s not important. The salon owner called me back and off the bat was rude, stating that «I should be more careful of what I write about her salon online, since its her livelihood» …“how dare I only give her salon 2 stars” …WOW, REALLY LADY??? …She then told me that she herself also refused to see me because of the bad review previously left. I asked her to go back and read my first review, it wasn’t BAD, there were plenty of good about it too! But some people are always glass half empty! Anyway, Anyone business owner has the right to refuse service… I GET THAT. But on the terms and the reasoning of which is was done, was and still in my mind is ridiculous. If the salon is your livelihood… you should treat your customers with RESPECT, KINDNESS AND WITH AN OPEN MIND. I hope people that have been to your salon and new people thinking of going read this… and maybe think again. It’s not only for a salon experience, or to get a good cut/​color… but people want to feel welcome, and proud to spend $$ with your establishment. I am thankful, I only got one try with your business… I have money to spend elsewhere, and that I shall do!
Since this whole debacle of a salon visit… I have gone somewhere else to get my hair done, it turned out fabulous… they EVEN styled it for me before I left! NO COMPLAINTS. :) 2015 here we come…

Keep with my lengthy review– I have a point. I promise.
I have had such a hard time in Hampton Roads trying to find a good salon after my awesome sauce hairstylist decided to take her craft elsewhere. Alas, I am super happy for her.
I don’t know if this is the drill for everyone, but whenever I go to a new salon I am placed with their new girl– which I get– because I’m the new client and they need to build up their clientele; however I always leave less than satisfied. I rather just bite the bullet with an ok cut and color, than revisit the same inexperienced chick 3 more times to have it corrected. I know stylists have a very difficult job, and with 15 salons in each shopping center, it’s hard to compete, but if you can’t do something, say so and give me to someone in the salon who can.
The last salon I went to (I will not name drop because I believe it was a rookie mistake and I’m sure someone has had to have called her out by now) burned me by charging me $ 290 to retouch my partial highlights. And it wasn’t the price of the highlights that jacked my total up– it was all the treatments she voluntarily put in my hair without my understanding that I was being charged for each one. I know with blonde comes toner, which is typically included in the price for highlights, but this was like every treatment and conditioner on their menu. I couldn’t curl my hair for like a month. annoying.
Annnnd now I review:
So I scheduled my appt over the phone. Very nice receptionist who patiently worked with my extremely tight schedule. She told me the name of my stylist (whom I immediately stalked online to see if she ruled) and confirmed my date and time.
When I got there, I was kindly greeted by the above referenced receptionist and introduced to my stylist, who was not who I was told on the phone– I’m thinking: oh noooo the rookie! I wasn’t prepared! but, as I was seated, I saw my original stylist. since I’m creepy and already knew what she looked like, I asked her why she wasn’t doing my hair today. she said (sit down for this) SHE WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH THE STYLE AND WAS GOING TO WATCH AND LEARN HOW TO DO IT. oh my goodness… I think I heard angels singing, the choir, beyonce… A miracle. A stylist who handed me off to someone with more experience. Glory. and props to her! (side note: I saw her work with another client and she did a great job on their cut and color)
I had Krystal. She was very nice and attentive to my requests. I showed her pictures and she totally knew what I wanted. and get this… you may want to sit back down… she told me the price for the color and cut upfront. tears of joy. And it was what I paid at the end! no funny business, sneak attack bank account sweep. Wow. I was already floored with my experience and she hadn’t even touched my hair yet.
Style, cut, color, everything came out perfectly. I also love their line of organic and anti-​cruelty products. I will be back to purchase some once I’m out of my current supply. I was so happy with the turn out, I couldn’t have booked my next appt any faster. I am practically counting down the days.
bonus features! you can book online, their products smell so so so so so good, and the salon itself is absolutely gorgeous. also– unlimited sweet tea refills! I do love the south. They should definitely start serving wine though. that is a sure fire way to have everyone come back for their trim within 4 – 6 weeks.
