Newtown Farmer’s Market

I only wish we had a place like this in Atlanta. We try to stop by here anytime we come to visit my wife’s grandma. It’s a bit difficult to time it right because they only open on Thurs-​Saturday, I believe. But this time, we got to stop by.
This place has everything. It’s supposed to be a Dutch/​Amish market but you can still find a place for sushi. We were mainly there to buy pies, breads, and dinner. I wish we could’ve stopped by at the meat and sea food shop but we were heading home that night.
We were determined to buy as much as we can since who knows when we’ll be back? So we did and we were very pleasantly surprised by all sorts of free stuff we got for being there on a black Friday! They were giving out free pies, BOGO free bbq platters, etc! Excellent!
I really hope this place stays around. There seem to be more competitions now with a high end grocery store opening up next door (forgot the name).
On a side note, I wonder what they do with stuff that’s not sold since they only open for 3 days? I’ve always wondered about this.

The Newtown Farmers market has some great highlights, but the less than spectacular shops really make it an average market overall.
The Good:
Zook’s BBQ Zook’s poultry, Aaron’s and the King of Falafel are my favorites. Each is spectacular at what they do. In fact, Zook’s and Aaron’s have become my go to spot for fresh, non-​organic meat.
The Bad:
Dutch Country Dairy is average but serviceable in a pinch. All of their cheeses are rather common and easily found in any supermarket. Too bad they don’t specialize in grass fed milk cheeses, organics or specialty cheeses. I can find conventional cheddar and provolone everywhere.
The Just Loaf’n bakery is decent but I don’t often buy their stuff because some of their products don’t have the ingredients listed. I would not be surprised if they used preservatives or artifical flavor/​color.
The Ugly:
Klinghoffer Farms has sold me some terrible produce, so I’m a bit sour on them. It’s been mealy tomatoes and apples and rotten onions one too many times for me. There are so many fresh produce spots in the area that there’s there’s no need to shop here and risk wasting your money.
The Dutch Treats shop is disgraceful. When you think Farmers market you certainly don’t expect sweets laden with artificial color, flavor and preservatives. Item after item here is full of chemical additives. Read the labels, it’s just shocking. The market owners really do themselves a disservice by having this shop there.

I love this farmers market. Fresh seafood, the sweet smells from the bakery, apple dumplings, pies, homemade peanut butter, falafel, BBQ, buckeye balls, Amish pretzels, and more.

I wouldn’t rate this place so much a market. They have produce, meats, and things of that sort, but their pricing can be arguable. I took a walk around, but didn’t find anything that I wasn’t cheaper at other markets.
As a place for food service, five stars. Someone else mentioned it being like a food court, which is totally accurate. A really good food court. It’s what I went for anyway… lunch! Lots of good choices to choose from.
I went on a Thursday afternoon and it seemed pretty busy, but nothing unbearable. I can absolutely see this place being packed on a Saturday. It seemed like there was ample seating, but I wouldn’t rely on that during lunch time or a weekend.
Not too shabby. I liked it. I plan on going back to purchase some fresh meats when I know I’m going straight home after because it all looked delicious!

I really enjoy the Newtown Farmers Market ever since I was a kid. It’s not so much a farmers market but just a bunch of food vending stalls. There is a wide variety of food; Mexican, Sushi, Seafood, Mid-​Eastern, and of course Amish. It is small and gets a bit crowded, especially the seafood place. In general, the place may be a bit over priced, but in general, everything is homemade so it’s worth it. So all-​in-​all the place is a good time.

This place is a great spot to try a whole bunch of different delicious foods. There is a huge variety of foods to select from pastries, to bbq, Japanese, Mexican, fresh fruit, and much more. The pig roast is a must, you won’t be sorry. It is absolutely amazing.

Expected a bit more having visited the Bristol Amish market and Reading Terminal in Philadelphia. The space is too small when it gets crowded on Saturdays, making a special food store experience not so great. Go early or late to avoid the crowds.

It’s not high class but the food is always good. Everything is fresh and the fish market had the best fish in the area. It’s not a traditional farmers market. It’s stationary and inside. It’s pretty cool.

This is a great local Amish farmers market. It’s a bit small and indoors but the vendors and products are all great. It is a bit overpriced but for an every now and then weekend treat it’s great.

The Newtown Farmer’s Market earns three stars because it is the home of Zook’s and the King of Falafel. I understand that the fish market also is quite good. I, however, do not purchase produce here because the prices are not, by and large, competitive, and there are so many other nearby places where the produce is both farm-​fresh and appropriately-​priced.
As other Unilocalers have noted, it is jammed on Saturdays and consequently difficult to navigate. Further, beware of slick (or inept) drivers in the parking lot. I usually park far away from the Market so as to limit my car’s exposure to the perils caused by those drivers, as noted by Marilyn V.

I love this place! Great for picking up things or simply wandering around and exploring what they have to offer. It’s a small and often crowded place, but worth checking out.

Love this place ! There pies and sweets are so delicious! Thanksgiving is around the corner and I got great pies for Thanksgiving to celebrate with my boyfriends family. They were a hit. But this place has more than sweets, they also have sushi, meats, cheese and so much more. Small place and it can feel very cloister phobic especially on the weekends with kids and what not running around everywhere. The first time I went here It was on a sat and I was very overwhelmed. Small building with vendors everywhere. Have patience and be careful in parking lot elderly people are all over the place, drive slow, back up slow and tend to not pay attention. Check this place out if in area Bc it’s great!

I’ve been coming here since I was a kid, and i love it! It’s not much of a farmers market, it’s more of food court. Most of the vendors are Amish markets (pretzels, candy, meats, bakery, sandwich, and cheese store) Other shops like the fruit stand, sushi bar, bread store, Spanish food mart King of Falaffel, coffee shop and fish place are owned by local residence.
One of the coolest things the farmers market has to offer is a summer pig roast on various weekends. This brings a lot of residence out, and creates a fun community event!

When visiting from out of town, I always enjoy stopping at this hodgepodge of stalls selling prepared foods, deli items, meats, cheeses, dairy, seafood, baked goods, sushi, nuts, candy, Middle Eastern specialties and Mexican food. The list goes on… But calling it a farmer’s market is really a stretch as there is only one vegetable/​fruit vendor.
It is only open Thursday through Saturday and seems to be a popular lunch destination for locals. Madaras sells fresh seafood and also does a brisk business of their fried seafood plates and sandwiches. They will cook up any of the on-​display seafood for you. I am not really partial to fried things, but my parents really seem to enjoy the shrimp and scallops. I like the steamed clams, but they can sometimes be a little sandy. Dutch Treats sells these yummy crispy chocolate wafers for assembling your own ice cream sandwiches at home. Some of the vendors are Amish including the very popular Barbie’s Soft Pretzels which also serves as a convenient stop for Goodnoe’s ice cream.
It may be tiny compared to Reading Terminal Market, but is a convenient place to stop for a quick bite to eat or to pick up prepared foods and miscellaneous grocery items.

My very first PA market was Reading so that is the gold standard by which I measure all markets. This one is solidly good. You can get a majority of your grocery shopping done here. What I buy on a regular basis: fruits/​veggies, bread, cold cuts/​meats, milk, dessert. JUST BRING CASH because most vendors are CASH ONLY.
There is only one fruits/​veggie stall. It is run by a very pleasant family with fluctuating prices. If I see a good price/​offer I’ll grab it (like figs on sale or a bushel of rasberries). Otherwise, they aren’t anything special.
Breads is another matter. There is a lovely lady who has a fantastic selection from major bakeries (Le Bus, Metropolitan, etc). Sometimes she has a great «day old» section I like to peruse. So far I haven’t had a bad loaf or roll from her shoppe.
The center spice vendor/​candy store deserves your attention if you like to cook. They have every type of flour, grain, spice or sweet you might need. Plus the prices are amazingly affordable. I love the honey section where there is a sign asserting «We know our beekeepers personally, this isn’t corn syrup.» I stop in weekly for fresh ground peanut butter.
Now, for meats you have a very nice selection. The poultry section is excellent, you can get fresh eggs, turkey out of season and any type of bird you need. The deli counter/​fresh meats vendor is also very good. When I need meat for the grill or deli meats for lunches I come here.
The dairy is from Kreider farms. It is always fresh and lasts forever. They carry lots of cheese, too, but I haven’t sampled them.
Their bakery is to die for, stay away if you are on a diet! They sell a large assortment of cinnamon buns, bagels, breads, pies, etc. and have a moderate gluten free section (I have not personally eaten any gluten free products but I find it a very nice offering).
Now, if you have read this far, you are asking «why 3 stars?» Well, size and selection are limited. There is a very tiny spanish/​italian counter, a seafood counter, an amish salads counter and a pretzel area, but this is Reading scaled down by ¹⁄₃. It is worth a visit and you will come away with at least 1 good, tasty deal.

i didn’t buy anything here so i can’t really say anything bad beside it’s a lot smaller than i expected. It took me about 5 minutes to walk through the whole place. I was looking for KING SALMON which they said they had but didn’t see it. The stuff they sell there seems to be really fresh though.

The Newtown Farmer’s Market is not really a farmers’ market at all. It is a space where various food vendors sell their homemade (or not) products from Thursday thru Saturday. The overall gestalt is Amish, but many of the retailers are local people selling non-​Pa. Dutch things. Go if you like fresh food options in meat, produce, dairy, bread, and Middle Eastern/​Mediterranean food, or Amish-​style pickled stuff, sushi, fresh fish, or my favorite BBQ’d everything. There is a small eating area if you love to snack or have a noisy meal, but otherwise take out is the name of the game.
The prices are more or LESS competitive with local grocers, but the freshness is what they score with. Also, the Pa Dutch folks who are there, provide a quaintness that makes the exploration a pleasant experience.
Overall, whether you like it or not depends on your expectations. Don’t think: Reading Terminal, because it is not even close to that in scope. Think: small time alternative to megamarkets with some local color and fresh food. With a little creativity and space, it could be so much more.
If you have the time and enjoy this kind of thing, the Trenton Farmers’ Market is much larger and more diverse. Worth a hungry visit.

Too broke or short in time to get to the Philly’s Reading Terminal? Newtown is an acceptable substitute a few minutes closer and with just as many hairy Amish folks running around.
The best part of this market is that even the new stores surrounding it like PetSmart look like a dairy farm on the outside. Beware as you manuever through the parking lot, as many of the older folks can barely park, though the parking is ample.
Once entering the place will slap your olefactory senses with the smells of freshly buttered pigs in a blanket and crispy battered shrimp. Although the selection is not as large as in Philly, it is still quite as tasty. Bring plenty of money and appetite to get through their bakery, fresh lunch (featuring roasted chickens, bbq ribs, etc) AND don’t neglect their oddly placed Mexican Taco stand and Greek Corner.
The prices are pretty reasonable for homemade food. Although not for desert, I think $ 8 for a pie is way too much unless Martha Stewart herself made it. But DO COME HERE for the buttered pretzels and fresh lemonade.

I love the Newtown Farmer’s Market. I’ve pretty much been going there my whole life. There’s lots of PA dutch fare to enjoy plus a bunch of other stalls with items like seafood, sushi, and Mexican. I’m a big fan of the seafood. If you go when they have a pig roast, the pulled pork sandwich is a must. I also love their breakfast sandwiches. The desserts of course are also awesome, treat yourself to a whoopie pie.

I was expecting so much more.

The one produce stand’s offerings were not appealing and were priced slightly cheaper than your neighborhood grocery chain.
The fresh pasta place is actually dried and almost $ 8 a pound. Sure there are lots of different flavors, but nothing was a must have.
I bought a half a pound of Lundejager (sp) from the butcher and am disappointed by the flavor. They taste like dried hotdogs! My girlfriend’s Tom Turkey jerky things taste more like «Lunds»!
The only reason I give this place 1 star is for the fresh pretzel place. Granted the pretzels are the Auntie Anne’s (I think that’s the mall place) style, but they are fresh fresh fresh! They also offer a few varieties of sausage and meat stuffed pretzels. Highlight of the stop.
If you like mediocre, go here. If you like fresh variety at real farm stand valued pricing, drive a little up 95 to the Trenton Farmers Market! Sooooooooooooooooooo much better. (and HALO farms
is right next door too!)
