Hate this place. Came for lunch with sister, someone(member of staff) was singing loudly and off tune in Chinese. And to top it off they got my sisters order wrong.(SHRIMPINSTEADOFCHICKEN. SHEHASALLERGY!!) They gave new one, but half way through her dish, suprise there is SHRIMP again. She had rash afterward. We did not finish our meal and left. I obviously did not tip, and waitress had nerve to tell me I should leave her tip for her service. NEVER coming back to this place again.

Run do not walk away from Shing Yee restaurant if you’re planning on anything other than take out. While the food is passable, the service/hospitality and energy is shockingly poor. Went for lunch yesterday, and while there were only two other people in the restaurant we were greeted with indifference while 6 in help ignored us. Had to ask for someone to take care of us. When our meal came we asked for mustard, the waitress forgot, we asked again and she got an attitude. The kicker was when we asked for more tea and she literally slammed it on the table. Honestly the most unpleasant restaurant experience I have had in a very long time.

My fav go-to no frills Chinese spot when I am in Newton. Been coming here for literally ten years. Good, fast food and nice service. Love their hot and sour soup!

I have been going to Shing Yee for years. Yes it is dated on the inside however for a local Chinese restaurant the food is very good and the prices reasonable. They never get a take out order wrong, My favorite dish is the General Gau’s Chicken and the portions are large. The service is good. There is one woman who has been there as long as I remember that can, at times, be a little crabby but the delicious Crab Rangoons make up for it. I recommend Shing Yee.

I ate here for the first time today and I was pleased. I ordered one of the lunch specials, which is a great deal! The prices range from $ 7.95-$ 9.50 and include a ton of food: choice of soup, choice of appetizer, choice of rice, plus entrée and tea. I had the egg drop soup, an egg roll, pork fried rice and General Gau’s chicken(mild). I will likely be stuffed for the rest of the day. The restaurant is quaint and clean and the service was quick and very friendly. The food was quite tasty. Don’t expect gourmet food here, it’s basic Americanized Chinese food, but it did not seem as fatty and greasy as other Chinese restaurants. The food was pretty salty, but that can be expected. The egg roll was huge and crispy, although lacked some flavor. The egg drop soup was delicious, the pork fried rice was tasty and the General Gau’s chicken was crispy without being overly fried or greasy. It was tasty even though I ordered it mild. Overall I was happy with my choice. I hope to return in the future!

This is a great place that has been very consistent. It’s not the best Chinese that you’ve ever had, but it always hits the spot when you’re looking for decent Chinese food. Don’t be fooled by the lack of a crowd in their establishment, because I believe that most of their business is take out. The staff have always been very friendly and very polite. I’m a huge fan of their spicy wanton in peanut sauce; keep in mind that it can get pretty spicy. Their pork fried rice is killer, too; add some lobster sauce on top for extra tastiness. General Chau’s isn’t that great, but every single Chinese place you go to does it differently; this one just isn’t my to my likings. Their beef with broccoli/peapods is great, which is important to me because most places have a fishy sauce taste which I don’t care for, but this place has it right.

Surprised by the low ratings and low number of reviews. I came here with my dad and we both really enjoyed it. We ordered a bunch of stuff but what stood out what their Peking Duck. Super crispy and fatty skin with moist and tender meat. I like how they are served with the more traditional pancake wrap rather than the typical bun that you would get at most Chinese establishments. I also like their super friendly service!

I didn’t eat there. Friday night the place was completely empty without a soul. I walked in and asked what’s good. The guy at front said it is all for American’s taste, that if I want real Chinese food, I should go to Chinatown. I proceed to order general chau’s chicken and ask if rice comes with it, which is standard fare. He pointed it to the menu and said rice is extra $ 1.75. Worst attitude for a Chinese restaurant! I don’t get why Chinese people treat their own countrymen like crap, time and time again.

I am very surprised to see the negative reviews here. Ordered take out from them for the first time tonight. It was excellent. Food was ready in 10 minutes. Had spring rolls, egg rolls, sweet and sour chicken, shrimp Lo mein and none of it was greasy at all. No stale oil taste at all. Very light and great flavor. Hot and sour soup was the best I have ever had. Kids loved the Wonton Soup. I thought it was as good as any Chinese take out I have had anywhere(NYC, Toronto, Montréal, CT).

A little pricey but the quality of the food makes up for the initial sticker shock. Only complain is the cashier barely spoke English and had a hard time communicating with her. The décor is definitely dated though, & the fact that it’s never busy inside makes me wonder…

When this place is mailing us a takeout menu proudly touting recognition it received in *1995, 1996, and 2007*… and it apparently hasn’t gotten any more recently than that… well. As it is, we ate here shortly after moving to the area and before learning that the most recent award this place has gotten was nearly a decade ago. The inside of the restaurant is dark and dated. The tea was overbrewed/otherwise bad enough that I preferred my water(I’ve never had tea at a Chinese restaurant that I wasn’t at least okay with drinking before). And the food is completely unimpressive. Bland, greasy… just not appetizing. Scallion pancakes were heavy and oily. I can’t remember what else we got. Not bad enough that we didn’t eat the leftovers, but we knew we’d never be coming back. It was kind of a depressing meal. We were pretty sad, since we were hoping to find good Chinese somewhere nearby. Even sadder now, since this place seems to have been pretty good at one point(some of the 20-year-old commendations on the front of their menu include the Herald, the Globe, and the Phantom Gourmet). What happened?

The fiancé kindly ordered take out the other day while I was up on the roof shoveling. She ordered general gao’s chicken, pork fried rice, and pan fried dumplings. All of it was pretty tasty. Not the best Chinese food I’ve had but you are really limited for good Chinese food in this area, especially when you need it delivered. I would have probably given them three stars for the food, but being legit, the only place willing to deliver in a snow storm and getting here on time gets you a huge bonus star in my book!

Oily and flavorless food. I had to re season everything to just make it edible. Won’t ever eat their food again.

First try. Excellent food. We ordered takeout of pretty standard fare: crab rangoon, steamed dumplings and Sui Mai, orange bean curd and lemon chicken. Everything was delicious and beautifully prepared. Will absolutely return.

I ordered what I had hoped would be a delicious plate of Chicken Fried Rice. Sadly, it came out literally minutes later and was utterly flavorless. I asked for my check immediately. On principle, I paid for the meal, but I let them know the meal was a serious disappointment. Unfortunately, the customer service was as awful as the dish: they didn’t seem to give two cahoots about my feedback, making no offers to let them get it right. Spend your money elsewhere.

I rarely write Unilocal reviews but my experiences at Shing Yee have been that bad that I felt compelled to share with others. Both visits, the restaurant was pretty empty, the kitchen looked dirty and the food… Inedible. We ordered the eggplant veggies in garlic sauce. Soggy veggies in a gelatinous sauce, greasy lo mein that tasted days old, and scallion pancakes that were flavorless except for greasy fried cakes. The peanut sauce is literally peanut butter in a container. The sesame noodles are unmixed, with noodles at the bottom and peanut butter at the top. 29 years, too many good Chinese restaurants under my belt. This by far was the worst.

Shing Yee has been my go to Chinese restaurant for several years now. Great food, polite staff and nice interior. The luncheon specials are especially tasty and affordable. The spicy and saucy ‘Mandarin Noodles with meat sauce’ dish always has me coming back for more.

Oh Chinese food in the Boston suburbs… It’s such a love/hate relationship. I love the idea of Chinese food on Christmas Day — I mean, they’re open, and packed to the brim, but I’m definitely conflicted about this place. The service is 5+ stars! They took care of a 13 adult and a baby party flawlessly!!! Tea was constantly flowing, water cups filled, enough rice and they were nice enough to bring the food around the table according to very specific instructions. Unfortunately, the food only 1 – 2 stars :-(Let’s say 2 stars giving them the benefit of the doubt and quite possibly our party ordered the wrong dishes. But there were major flaws. Won-ton Soup: the flavor was great, but the center of my won-tons was cold. Egg rolls: overly fried, filling was flavorless. Shu-Mai: I’ve never seen Shu-Mai Iike this… No shrimp inside and even worse, the inside was cold. Green Onion pancakes: the best appetizer. Entrees were varied: lemon chicken, orange chicken, beef and broccoli, braised beef, and a few others. The entrees were good enough. Not amazing but at least they were hot.
