Freehand Custom Carvings is an artists’ collective organized around the principles of freedom, creativity and spirit. The studio and sculpture grounds are located in northwest New Jersey and host a number of artists throughout the year. The artwork that is showcased on the grounds is available for visitors to enjoy and also purchase. Brett McLain is the founder of Freehand Custom Carvings and has been sculpting wood for over 18 years. Freehand has grown from one man with a chainsaw to a group of individuals united behind a common goal: carving a sustainable future.
Sculpted wood is only one aspect of Freehand. Most importantly, we seek to sculpt ideas. The people involved at Freehand recognize the importance of art, culture and nature in today’s society and are creating a location that inspires visitors. The property is continuously changing to feature new projects that include gardens, sculptures and functional art. The development of more sustainable systems and positive human interaction is paramount to everyone at Freehand. Freehand is a collective that highlights art, as well as the art of living.

Brett M.
Business Owner
Brett McLain was raised in an artistic family who encouraged him to explore his own artistic capabilities at a young age. He started carving when he was 17 years old and his body of work has grown to include large tree carvings over 30 feet tall, estate style entrances, fine art sculptures, furniture, and commercial work. He has traveled throughout Europe sculpting wood at numerous competitions and symposiums where he has been an award-winning participant. Brett founded Freehand Custom Carvings so that artists could come together and collaborate on large scale projects. His most current project is developing a sculpture park that incorporates sculptures, paintings, and beautiful landscaping. Brett and his partner, Casey, have been focusing on permaculture practices that incorporate edible, organic landscaping amongst the beautiful pieces of art. Giving back to the earth and recycling, reusing, and composting the materials used is paramount to everyone involved at Freehand.
