Newport by Segway

Horrible! I’m fuming. Booked a tour for 10am today. I’m currently standing outside the meeting place at 480 Thames street in Newport, RI. Called to see where they were and was told all tours are cancelled for the week and emails went out last week.
Not only did I not receive an email but I received a confirmation email two days ago with my confirmation number. Called management and there’s nothing they can do. Came all the way from NJ for this. Can’t wait to tell everyone back home and all my PR friends about this. This place doesn’t even deserve one star.

We came into town and called Andy at Segway of Newport to see if they had any electric bikes available for the day, they did. So we packed our day lunch and went straight over to start our adventure. We rented the electric bikes and zipped around for three hours. I think we went at least 15 miles (the Ocean View Drive) and still had enough time to stop for a beer and lunch. I absolutely loved the electric bikes. I felt like I still got exercise but then when I needed a little help, I just pushed the «gas» and it did the rest. Also, they went pretty fast (at least for me, my husband (of course) wanted more power). Anyway, next time my family comes into town, I am already planning a trip to Newport for them to ride around and enjoy the coast! Thanks Segway of Newport!

Fantastic tour of Newport. Our tour guide Jenna was very knowledgeable about both the history of Newport as well as interesting facts/​gossip. Well worth the price. Definitely do the 3hr tour! You won’t be disappointed.

Had a groupon to try this out, and it was more fun than expected! The tour itself wasn’t too bad — it’s crazy seeing houses that are worth enough to feed a small 3^rd world country for months! I couldn’t help feeling a bit like Gob from Arrested Development as I zipped about on my segway. For that alone, I’m giving this place 5 stars!

This tour itself was really great. The staff was very accommodating to the time we wanted to come in and if you’re going in the summer, getting to busy Newport earlier rather than later is recommended. We easily found parking nearby in the metered spots. We had 8 people in our group for an hour and a half ride. What I liked about the tour was the quality segways — they were very well maintained/​new. The tour was fun, you got to see and hear a little of everything –mansions, water views, farmland, beaches, history of Newport, with opportunities to take photos (off the segway). What I didn’t like was the owner, Ryan’s, 3 hour explanation of the rules. Yes I understand that there should be rules and a lot of them, for safety. Yes I understand that the machines are expensive ($ 6300!), but do I need your demeaning attitude? No. He just appeared very anxious (even though presumably he’s been doing this awhile), repetitive and spoke over his staff multiple times. If he’s going to get so worked up, he might need to be in a business without these types of risks. I was glad when we left his negative energy. Overall, a positive day, with no incidents, only great Newport outdoor time.

This was my first time riding a segway and I loved it!
There’s plenty of parking out on the street in front of the store so that shouldn’t be a problem.
The store has you sign a waiver, then it suits you up with a helmet. You have to wear glasses which they can provide if you don’t have your own.
The staff was very considerate and polite. During the 5 minute training session getting us used to the segways the guide comically gave us a bunch of andecdotes about some of the minor accidents they have when people try to do too much at one time on the segways (I should know, I fell off: p). I appreciated how calmly he dealt with me when I made a mistake.
You learn how to ride a segway very quickly. It comes natually so don’t worry too much about it.
The first half of the trip is pretty exhilerating for a newbie going up to speeds of 10 mph (they have governors on the segways that gently buck you back to prevent you from going too fast). The tour itself was lined with rediculously lavish mansions and front lawns as well as a history lesson of the area. There’s a small part going along the coast line. If you go on a good day you’ll definitely enjoy it. Be sure to bring sun screen!!!
If you’re well versed in segways, I’d still recommend it for the views you can see.
Maybe not worth $ 60 for a second time through but if it’s your first time I’d definetly reccomend this place!

My mom and I went on vacation to Newport for a weekend and decided to go on the Segway tour of Newport. WE HAD A BLAST!
The brief training was enough to get us on the road and feel comfortable going with the group of 8 people (we did not know anyone in our group, but at stops we got to talk). These machines are awesome, going over bumps and turning onto roads, and getting to go up to a decent speeds. Every time we stopped (I believe it was 3 times in all) our guide helped us get off and on making sure we were constantly safe.
Our guide also knew a lot of great stuff about Newport. She even had some of her own information because of her 2 – 3 other jobs in the area. She gave it a personal touch and was funny. Every person who works at the business was friendly. I think that the owner came by before we left and got us all excited for our trip.
I highly recommend Segway of Newport.

Let’s be honest… this experience is more about riding a Segway than it is looking at mansions. If you keep that in mind, I think you will have an enjoyable experience. We bought a couple Groupons (you shouldn’t pay full price for this… it’s too pricey) and headed out on our tour. Our tour guide Eric gave a disclaimer that he knows more about Segways than mansions, but he was able to offer some interesting tidbits about the people who lived in the mansions. You do spend most of your time watching out for the curb, potholes, cars, and the person infront of you, so you don’t really get to look at the mansions.

Not sure what was up with the people from New York in the last review, but they seem like dbags. The folks at Segway of Newport were great — Nicole on the phone and Andy, our tour guide. The Segway was a little intimidating at first (and by intimidating I mean that I have the athletic ability of a drunk, 70 year-​old). After about 3 minutes with some coaching from Andy, I along with everyone else was comfortable with the Segway and easily stopping, starting, turning and pulling U-​turns.
The Segway Mansion Tour is really a 90+ minute tour of the Mansion neighborhood (Bellevue Ave, Salve, etc…)and you only roll onto 1 – 2 properties, which may be a turn off for some people. I was fine with it since I was most curious about getting on a Segway for the first time and touring Newport. For $ 60, it’s on the pricey side and I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re not curious about riding a Segway. However, if you have any interest in getting on one of these — this is a perfect opportunity. Honest review would have been 3.5 stars, but I rounded up given the service.
