History

Established in 1948.

Phyllis and Michael J. Harrington opened the doors to MJ Harrington’s in 1948 as the sixth owners of an established jewelry and watchmaking business here on Main Street. Originally founded by Amos Woodbury in 1841, the operation triumphed through two World Wars and the Great Depression before Uncle Mike and Aunt Phyllis founded our company.

Uncle Mike served our country as a Navy seaman during World War II. When off-duty, he taught himself to repair watches for his fellow shipmates. His commitment to serve and his newly acquired trade led him to continue his craft as an unpaid watchmaking apprentice in Keene, NH. Aunt Phyllis worked as a buyer for a Keene department store where she had been working since she was a teenager.

Dad, Aunt Phyllis’ younger brother, Jim Lantz, bought the business in 1970 and upheld the tradition of serving our great community. Family run for over 65 years, together they planted the roots that continue to make MJ Harrington what it is today.
