Hyatt Regency Newport

Stayed here for business. BLUF: I wouldn’t stay here again if I was in the area. I would try the Marriott, and recommend others to go elsewhere. *This is a gripe about Hyatt in general. With the new hotel categorization, the Hyatt Regencies I’ve visited now include a ridiculous resort fee. So you’re paying for «stuff» that you may or may not use (bicycles) and some bottled water which you should get anyway if you are diamond. The problem is they didn’t upgrade any of these hotels. The rooms are basic and outdated and they didn’t convert anything to a resort. Resorts are hotels in which you never have to leave because there are so many amenities and activities there. Hyatt needs to get it together.*
Anyways, the room I stayed in was very basic. Received no upgrade in an empty hotel. The staff onsite were pretty nice. You are in a good location on the water, and can walk downtown for all the restaurants and shopping. I had the breakfast buffet every morning which was really good with the omelette bar. Be careful booking because they will try to sneak fees on your bill. I had to fight the billing manager because of that. I would not stay there again in fear they would try to rip me off again. Now I see why this Hyatt was rated so low.

The rooms in this hotel aren’t the fanciest, but the location is super fantastic. Right on Goat Island, surrounded by water. Walking distance into town. The best, though, was the clambake. I was there for a work event and the hotel did a huge clambake with lobsters, clams, mussels, corn and ootates, and it was sooooooooo good. Really great to see how it was done, and super tasty.
I’m docking one star for the room itself, as it didn’t meet the expectations that had been set by the brand and the photos on the website, but this was really a fabulous stay.

I read many complaints about the noise level in this hotel. It’s because the door is so cheap; it’s hollow core. As you walk down the hall you can hear everyone’s conversation as if you are in their room. There are signs in the hallways asking everyone to be quiet. Fortunately, the fan be set to continually stay on all night so that other sounds are blocked.
Good news… this is not a party hotel.
My room was extremely comfortable and tasteful; colors of grays creams and an accented turquoise wall. The king size bed was so comfy. I would like to have spent the whole morning in it.
The lobby restaurant for breakfast was a good value. They have a very good buffet including an omelet bar for $ 19.
I’m giving this hotel 4 stars because of the cheap-​end entry room doors and because of some problems at the front desk. I only stayed here because of a wedding. It’s a bit far from everything else, if you want to get a quick coffee or something. They have a shuttle but it’s on their time not yours.

Drove 1.45 hrs to get to this place. I planned a nice day with my boyfriend in Newport and it ending with a nice massage at Stillwater Spa. My boyfriend and I waited in the relaxation area together. He was picked up first THEN 5 mins later Stefan picked me up. The massage itself was pretty mediocre. Super light pressure. He just went through the motions of giving the massage. He expressed that it had been a long week and that he had done 19 massages. I told him I had done 24 (I’m a massage therapist as well). You’d think he’d know better than to cut my time– but no. He ended early. After STARTING late! I got a 35 – 40 min massage (yes– I timed it). I regret driving so far for two massages that were below standard.

My mommy went to the Hyatt Spa this week. She described the spa manager as rude and unprofessional… something about scheduling and mix up with the selection of CMT. We are locals and try to support during the off-​season, but that will be our last visit.

DO NOT STAY HERE. I’ve been here twice. The first time 2 years ago I thought the hotel was great so when booking for a weekend with some girlfriends I picked this place again because of the positive experience last time.
This stay we got back to our room around 11:30 and no less than 5 min passed and there was a knock at the door saying they had got a complaint that we were being loud and it was «quiet hours». We were talking in our room while we were in bed. The walls are so thin here that you can hear every word from other rooms in your room. Someone then came up again after 20 minutes and threatened that if he has to come up to the room again he would call the cops. FOR US TALKING IN THE ROOM. We paid good money to stay in the hotel where you felt like a prisoner in your own room that you could not talk in. On top of that the man who came to our room was the rudest person we had ever met.
We complained the next morning and they didn’t care at all. Worst customer service.

My husband and I stayed here this past weekend for a quick getaway. We had been through a rough winter and when I booked the hotel online I had left a note asking for anything they could do to make this little getaway a little special for us — just to cheer us up. At check-​in we were upgraded (at no extra charge) to a king 2 level suite with a breathtaking view. They also waived our resort fee without me asking. To top it off, once we arrived at the room, a staff member showed up with a cheese plate and bottle of wine for us. It was just so kind of them to be so accommodating and generous.
We used the shuttle service to and from downtown Newport and it was very simple and convenient. So much easier than driving into town and looking for parking!
The next day we ordered room service, which was a little overpriced in my opinion, but you are also paying for the convenience which I understand. We ordered two Belgian waffles (which came with berries) and a pot of coffee. It wasn’t much food, and the bill came to about $ 45 after the extra charges. It was delicious, but next time I’ll skip room service.
After breakfast we had a couples massage at the Stillwater Spa in the hotel. The massage itself was fantastic. Super relaxing and well done. My husband and I were a little disappointed afterwards because we hoped there would have been a hot tub or couples sauna area… or just somewhere for us to continue our relaxation together.
The hotel allowed us to switch to late checkout (noon) free of charge to accommodate our massages and not have to worry about rushing.
Overall, we had a fantastic time at the hyatt… we wished we could have stayed another night in our beautiful room.

This has been the most awful hotel experience I have ever had. It doesn’t even deserve one star. My boyfriend and I stayed at the hotel for two nights this past weekend. When we arrived we spent about 30 minutes looking for a parking spot. We needed having to squeeze my car in to a tint spot in a field as tree branches scratched at the top of my car.
The first morning I woke up to get ready for the st. pattys day parade. This was the whole reason for our stay at the hotel. I’m rushing to get ready and while in the shower I realize that the water isn’t going down the drain. I’m standing in mucky water. My boyfriend answers a knock at the door. A worker there is reporting that there is a water leak in the building somewhere and asked if he could see the shower. Because I am currently in the shower my boyfriend requests he come back in a little bit. Meanwhile the front desk calls and asks that we switch to a different room. I’m in a towel and rushing to leave the hotel to make the parade and now we have to pack all of our things and switch rooms. I throw clothes on and quickly out make up on and throw all my crap into my bag. When we got to the desk to change room keys there wasn’t any kind of apology for the inconvenience or anything. They did however upgrade our room stay. Frustrated, we rush to the new room and try to organize our stuff to make sure we took everything from the previous room. Out of time we just left all our personal stuff out in the open.
When we got back from the parade we noticed that house keeping or someone had been in the room. Why? I don’t know, as we had just got the new room about two hour prior and had only spent 10 min in it. So, all of my very personal items were out on the open and my privacy was definitely invaded.
Next we attempt to eat food at the hotel restaurant. I called down to verify that the veggie burger was in fact made without eggs before we went down there. They said yes. We go to the host stand and they tell us to sit where we can find a spot. What’s the point of a host that doesn’t seat you? We walk around and everything is full except for a little table near the outskirts of the dining area. After we wait for 15 min Simone finally asks us if we have been helped. They send a waitress over who can only find one menu. My boyfriend and I share the menu and realize that the veggie burger is made with egg. We leave.
We decide to try the room service menu. They also say their veggie burger is vegan. Upon asking a few more questions just to verify I discover it’s not actually vegan once again. He was so rude on the phone and I felt I was a bother. I have to carry around an Epi-​pen for food allergies. Good thing I found out about the egg before listening to the ill informed workers.
My boyfriend and I decide to check out the heated pool. The pool had trash floating in it and it was cold as hell! We lasted like 5 min before returning to our rooms to take a warm tub. On the way out of the pool area a worker was about to walk in and he had his hands full of towels. I decided to let him and hold the door for him. He didn’t even say thank you or acknowledge me. Everyone here is so rude. Back at the room we filled the run with hot water and climbed in. The water had tons of brown specks floating in it! We can’t win at this place. Morning of leaving we are in bed with a privacy door hanger up and someone knocked on the door twice and tried entering but the interior lock was activated and prevented them from doing so.
The whole place is ripped apart and under construction that looks like it’s been that way forever. We paid extra for a water front view and there was a nice dump of wood and a deck half done. The stairways have wall as that are ripped apart. Don’t stay at this place.

Shitty hotel with unhelpful staff. Cant beat the view of garbage bags from our window. See photo. Spend your money wiser and stay at B&B instead. For sure the locals will appreciate it.

My husband and I were among the unlucky guests who stayed at the Hyatt Regency Newport during Presidents’ Day weekend when the pipes burst. In all fairness, I understand that 2÷14÷16 was the coldest day in the history of Newport, and that the hotel staff had no control over the pipes bursting. That being said, I think that the quality of this hotel is sub par to begin with, and the way they handled the flooding was not ideal. After being evacuated from our room within 30 minutes of checking in on Valentine’s Day, we had to wait outside in the subzero temperatures for an extended period of time before being allowed back into the lobby area. Once in the lobby, we weren’t really given any direction or information whatsoever; we were only told that we could not return to our rooms and that it would «be a while» before we were allowed to. Rather than providing guests with periodic updates, the guests were forced to go up to the front desk and wait in line just to find out what was going on, and this lasted several hours. My husband and I were luckily able to make our dinner reservations that night, but the entire experience was stressful and unpleasant. Later that evening, the pipes burst on the other side of the hotel as well, so the lobby was flooded and the water was shut off for much of the day.
Aside from this unfortunate event, I think that the hotel in general needs a major face lift, and several of the staff members could use a refresher course in customer service. I agree with other reviewers who said that they seemed inconvenienced anytime you approached them (there were definitely a couple of exceptions, but in general the staff seemed disinterested and annoyed, at best).
Everything about this place felt very old and weathered, and our room felt more like a Motel 6 than a nice hotel room. Our «ocean view,» which was what was advertised, consisted of a view of the parking lot with a sliver of ocean on the far right. The bedding consisted of a thin blanket, which was not enough for the coldest weekend in Newport history. In addition, we realized when we finally made it back into our room that we only had one full-​sized towel in the bathroom. I requested an additional one, which was brought to us that night, but the following day, housekeeping replaced the two bath towels with a single towel again. We had even hung up the used towels, which I thought was the universal sign for «plan to reuse.» My husband ended up using a hand towel for the rest of our stay because he was too annoyed to request an additional bath towel again.
The shuttle service that you’re forced to pay for is unreliable and inconvenient. You have to call and schedule a pick up ahead of time, and the pickups are supposed to be on the half hour but do not show up consistently. Several of us waited 20+ minutes in –4 degree weather after having called a total of three times to request the shuttle.
We do plan to return to Newport someday, but we will never return to the Hyatt. There are far too many hotels and inns that are more conveniently situated and likely provide better service and amenities. Luckily my husband and I were able to get a refund through Orbitz, but it’s unacceptable that others who booked directly through the Hyatt were only refunded the $ 20 hotel fee. Ridiculous.

I guess you can say we’re pretty low maintenance travelers. When we travel, we don’t spend much time in our room or on the hotel grounds because, in a town as amazing as Newport, why would you want to? With that being said, this hotel is just fine for our needs, we stay here whenever we come to Newport because we love the charm of Goat Island and the views of the bay. The rooms are comfortable enough, we’ve always been able to request one with a view of either the bridge or the bay between Goat Island and Newport with no problems. And during the off season (which is the only time we visit Newport), the rates here are a steal.
From other reviews, it’s clear that the hotel restaurant is pretty awful. We’ve never even considered eating there because mind-​blowing restaurants are so numerous in Newport. The hotel bar is pretty rough too (if you have any appreciation whatsoever for decent cocktails, beer or wine). Luckily, there’s a plethora of craft beer, cocktail, and wine bars along Broadway St. only a short drive away.
The hotel shuttle is a nice touch, if it works for your schedule. Otherwise, Newport now offers Über (if you don’t want to drive) and you can usually get one to the hotel within 5 minutes.

From the beginning this was just a bad experience. It was a very cold weekend (single digits) but this is New England, not Miami. They had one king size room left (which we reserved). Walk into the room, it’s freezing. Call front desk they say they will send someone. Sitting in our winter jackets for 20 minutes, I call back. Get huge attitude that it’s cold and the «engineer is busy and will get there when he gets there.» Finally he comes (the first nice employee we met so far) fixes the heat but tells us it will take hour to warm up the 45 degree room. We go to switch rooms, no apology just attitude and get two double beds and front desk ladies act like we’ve been a huge inconvenience to them?
Last day. No water, no notice no water. When it finally came back on, brown and gross. Again no call from the front or any notice, «hey we have a problem, sorry, just give us a few moments.» We couldn’t wait to leave this hotel.

We had a great stay at the Hyatt last weekend! The room had a cool vibe, a pretty water view, and was immaculate! The bar area was pretty cute and modern. It obviously isn’t a 5 star hotel, but was nicer than I had expected, and I’m pretty picky! Monica at the front desk was SO kind and warm, and made sure we had a nice room for our quick little trip with NO kids in tow! Thank you Monica!

This is our first stay here and our first visit to rhode island. We are happy with the hotel choice. The room is clean and comfy. Everybody here is friendly

This Hyatt is in poor condition. The rugs need replacing, the building smelled like cigarets, rooms not cleaned on time. Arrived at second room only to find urine on the toilet seat. The Windows need replacement as the condensation prevents any water view what so ever. The towels had been washed one to many times and smell burned. Poor lighting in the bath room. Furnishings very dated. The bed was awful.
Don’t waste your money. If you must have a national chain stay at the Marriott or Wyndam and you will be happier

We stayed here for Thanksgiving for a very cheap price — $ 99 per room and it was supposed to be a fabulous room.
We check in — and the room overlooks a building. if you tilt your head to the right and look in the corner you can see some water. Room is very very very tight and only one window.
We talk to our friends who checked in an hour later — they have this luxurious room with 4 windows overlooking the water.
WTF?
So we ask at the front desk and they immediately change it.
Our new room was beautiful — quiet and amazing. All new and updated.

Beautiful hotel, good looking rooms, helpful staff just too loud for my taste. My husband and I went on an overnight to Rhode Island. We were excited to stay near the water. Our room was facing the water… We were so excited but it was one of the loudest hotels we have ever stayed at. There were people slamming doors all night long and there was a ship that was blowing a horn all night. We were exhausted from staying there. We also ate at the restaurant inside the hotel and it was awful.

We are definitely return customers to the Hyatt Goats Island. A nice place to grab a few good quality drinks and a good bite.

Great and beautiful location, but as many have already pointed out, it is a very busy wedding factory. During my visits it was also laden with flashy nouveau riche types which kinda ruins the potential serenity and class of the place. The inconvenience ranges from noisy drunk attendees to stressed out bridesmaids yelling for personnel. My personal experience was severely tarnished at check-​in.
Most of the personnel is friendly, adequate, and handles the stress well, but the lady at the reception ruined the experience by treating me like dirt on arrival. Being very obviously condescending and judgmental in her demeanor just because my foreign credit card didn’t work (I had moved back to the US literally that night and the location change triggered fraud prevention). It took me five minutes and one phone call to circumvent the issue, a time where I didn’t hog the counter but stepped aside to allow her to check in other people who walked in (no line) and she had no extra effort to go through at all with my solution, but when the issue was solved miss receptionist gave me the worst «you poor peasant» look I’ve ever experienced, ignored my explanation or my run of the mill polite conversation attempts completely while staring at her screen and typing away, only to transition coldly to directions to my room without even bothering to bid me good-​bye or wishing me a pleasant stay in the end. This exceptionally rude start wasn’t made up by my further experience here.

I love this hotel. Love it. In fact, my husband practically had to drag me out of it after only one night, while I cried, «No! No! Let’s stay for a week!»
Our room was beautiful, with an amazing view of the water, a nice sized patio with chairs, and lovely nautical-​themed décor. The bed is comfortable, and it’s wonderful to be able to open the door overnight and listen to the foghorn, seagulls, and ocean. It’s not super convenient to the center of the town, but it’s a short walk which was delightful in the fog.
Twice in the evening we headed over to Five33 for a couple beers and had great service. Their prices are very reasonable for beer, especially given the location and the fact that it’s a hotel. The menu had a variety of options on it, and while we didn’t eat, the food I saw going by looked delicious.
The staff was very friendly and attentive, and made our stay easy and comfortable.
We had breakfast the next morning in the restaurant, and it was delicious. The food was fresh and flavorful, and there were a ton of options, as well as a gentleman cooking made-​to-​order omelettes and eggs. I had a bagel and smoked salmon, which was tasty. Even if you didn’t have a coupon for free breakfast, I would definitely consider heading down here.
