Ordered the Italian sandwich as a lunch special and it was amazing! Sat near the window so the breeze felt great. Beer on tap was very refreshing. Recommend it!

It’s a good location and the kitchen is open late. If you like eating at the bar you can. If you like something more formal you can sit at a table. In the summer it’s open air to the sidewalk. There’s always pool and pinball in the back: it’s not at all pretentious. The neighborhood bar feel translates into a solid bar style menu of fish, beef and pork entrées with traditional appetizers. This isn’t gourmet dining: it’s good old neighborhood bar fare. It’s hot and tasty. It’s reasonably priced. It’s friendly service. It’s a relaxing setting. It’s Newport’s little secret.

I love this place. It’s the best place to order lunch to go in the area. I get lunch here frequently and go to happy hour weekly. The bar staff are very friendly and attentive. They have great free food at the happy hour on Friday. As for takeout I really like the burritos and the nachos(which are handmade). The potato skins are THEBESTPOTATOSKINS I HAVEEVERHAD. This place has great staff and quality food. I go back again and again.

Surprised very much with German Weiner Schnitzel dinner, very very good. It’s Oktoberfest food, yum.

I’m sure I would have enjoyed my experience had my waitress, Michelle, been less rude and more accommodating. However, she was so incredibly rude from the moment we sat down, that we didn’t even have the chance to finish our drinks before we decided that we would have had a better dining experience somewhere else without her service. She pointed at me with her index finger and told me I didn’t look my age in front of other customers. Then she proceeded to sit down at another table and gossip with another woman all while neglecting the dining room full of tables that she had. This was not the service I had been expecting at a place as well known as Griswolds, very disappointing, and wish I had the chance to give this place a review based on the food, but because of Michelle’s clear lack of service experience our visit was cut short.

Sorry cannot recommend the restaurant. The Jambalaya was horrible. It was like rice in American Shop Suey.

I really enjoyed my meal here. And my waitress /bartender was very sweet and knowledgeable. –the food came out hot and without a long wait. –The music was at the perfect volume. (not too loud) –The food was good and priced fairly. –the menu had more then one cuisine to choose from. –it’s nice that the front of the restraunt opens up to let in… the summer air. –plenty of large windows give a good view of a beautiful B and B property next-door. –sports on the bar televisions. –clean tables –clean restrooms. I will come back, for sure. I would recommend to friends, as well. And I should mention that the bartender stopped what she was doing… to help an elderly woman get up from her table… leave the restraunt… and cross the road. I am so happy to see that level of care for a customer. Just something you don’t see everyday, unfortunately.

Very convenient to Hotel Viking. Our waitress was very nice, friendly and attentive. We were parched from walking in the heat and humidity and she always came by to fill our water glasses. My chicken fajitas were good and fairly priced($ 12) and our son liked his lobster roll. We both enjoyed our beers and thought the selection of draft beers was adequate for most tastes. My wife was not enthusiastic about either her scallops or her Chardonnay wine. The food arrived in a timely fashion. We’re from Philadelphia and I liked the Red Sox Nation vibe in the place. If you are staying at the Hotel Viking and are too tired to walk down to and back up from the more bustling Thames St area, Griswold’s Tavern fills the bill, imo.

Avoid! Poor service and bad food. We came in at 2:30 for a late lunch with our family. It took forever to order and then get our food. Food only came for ¾ of our party and took an additional 15 minutes for the rest. The teriyaki skewers were chewy and bad. Our kids thought the burgers were disgusting. But the service was not really nice and just kept saying they had gotten slammed for the last four hours. We saw another family sit, never have their order take and then walk out. Just not worth it.

Nice, casual atmosphere! The food was ok, not bad, but not great. Very affordable and the service was good. My glass of Merlot cost only $ 5.75. Everywhere else I paid $ 10 to $ 11 dollars a glass.

I am so shocked to see all the bad reviews about Griswold’s. My fiancée and I have been coming here for years. We come to Newport from Brooklyn about 4 times a year and Griswold’s is always our first spot. The chimichanga, little necks, and buffalo wings are all fabulous! The waitress/bartender is a doll that always stops by for a quick chat and a recommendation. If you had a bad experience here please give them another try. Also, the drinks are not weak and they are super yummy at a reasonable price.

I love the décor and the service was good but I came away uninspired by the menu. The food was standard Chelo’s fare, but nothing extraordinary. Portion size was fine, but there’s nothing that stands out other than the décor and location.

Very average place, ordered a few sandwiches and a burger with some buddies, walked to pick up the food and after coming in 15 minutes like I said by the time I walked 5 minutes home my Reuben sandwich was so soggy and gross I just had to eat the corned beef with no bread. Burger was decent and I will say the Cajun fries were good. Won’t go again, won’t recommend it.

Griswold’s is the quintessential neighborhood pub, offering local-pub food and a local-pub feel. With its garage front doors, ample four-sided bar with small dining tables and pool table off to the side, it’s not trying to be the Four Seasons. Go there for burgers and beer or pasta and Pinot. The waitresses are friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed. Plus our meals were quite good. Reading the mixed reviews, you may be hesitant to try Griswold’s but I encourage you to give it a go.

Went in with a group of about 15 people, all dressed nicely because we had just come from a wedding ceremony. The manager said they wouldn’t be able to seat everyone even though the place was mostly empty– probably 50 – 60 empty chairs with no reservations. So, our group was Asian. I’ve lived in big cities across the globe and I’ve run into racial discrimination before. Most white Americans will simply never experience it, but it sucks. Griswold’s sucks. That manager needs to get his ass kicked in a lawsuit.

Stopped in for a drink to warm up. Nice friendly bartender and she made a perfect old fashioned! Really cool place, nice and rustic. Didn’t have time to eat here but it was filling up by the time we departed!
