To celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary, I, Wife N, our two kids, Brother N and a good friend all took off to Newport and stayed here for a weekend. Now, we’ve rented probably five different homes in as many years at various locations up and down the Central and Northern Oregon Coasts – Newport, Depoe Bay, Cannon Beach, Rockaway, etc. This is, bar none, the nicest vacation rental home I’ve yet stayed in. It is absolutely beautiful. Perched high along the shoreline, just across the highway from the ocean, it features stunning views and sunsets. The house itself is a three-level, with a garage and game room on the bottom floor, kitchen, dining area, general living area and bedroom on the middle floor, and family/sitting area, twin bedroom and master bedroom on the top floor with the two bedrooms connected by a beautiful and large master bathroom, complete with jacuzzi tub, shower, and dual sinks. The first and second floors also feature their own full bathrooms complete with showers. The house is expertly decorated with nautical themes throughout, high-end appliances, beautiful kitchen, ornate sinks — just excellent. As a home/amateur chef, I was blown away by how completely the kitchen was equipped. In most rentals, you find the owner’s discards in the kitchen – that old flaking 1980’s non-stick skillet, the fraying spatula, rusty can opener, etc. Not here. The veritable bevy of pots, pans, dishes, knives and a large assortment of kitchenware was fit for any reasonably adept cook. There was easily service for a party of twelve in the cupboards, and a wide variety of glasses ranging from typical to shot glasses, cocktail glasses, and several sizes of wine glasses fit for your white or red selection of choice. A closet held no less than a hundred DVD’s to play(though we did find ourselves wishing for a few more titles that would be suitable for younger family members in the 4, 8, 12 range – nothing bringing a few of your own can’t resolve). They also had a decent selection of card and board games for those so inclined. It’s a quick 5-mile scoot south into the town of Newport, close enough that it’s easy shopping, but far enough that it feels nicely rural. Some nice walking and hiking trails are a half mile off to the southeast and avid walkers will find Devil’s Punch Bowl two miles to the north. Each room had its own thermostat and space heater, and we found the house comfortable round the clock. Our only(minor) complaint is the bed in the master bedroom is up on risers, presumably to give a better ocean view while lying on the bed. But short people like 5′ 1″ Wife N will have some degree of difficulty climbing onto it. I would recommend the owners add a small stepping stool in here to provide needed assistance. This was not enough of an issue to detract from a very solid 5* rating, well worth the money and we hope to be able to return for another stay this summer!
