Tried this place for the first time because they now have gluten free pancakes. They were amazing! Huge and fluffy… absolute heaven. To go with it I ordered a side of bacon. They didn’t just bring me 2 to 4 pieces, but a whole plate full. Didn’t try anything else, but if you want gluten free pancakes and bacon… GO!!!

We have been eating here for many years off and on but recently we have started to eat more often. The food has come up a level. I am a big Greek Hamburger steak fan and theirs has that Greek flavor that most places have lost. Their Fries are probably the best on the peninsula. Service is spot on and the place is clean.

I don’t know if I got the wrong think but it is a steakhouse. I got the 8oz steak and eggs. Delmonico medium rare eggs, grits, and biscuit. My date had deluxe hamburger with fries. The fries were amazing! And that’s about it. Coffee, steak, grits, biscuit all blah. Cheeseburger must have been good cause my date gave this place three stars. Customer service was great. Maybe it’s not the best for breakfast… idk

Went today for breakfast. great dinner coffee & friendly service, but food was way below what we would expect for a popular local diner. Hash browns were under seasoned, omelet was over salty, toast was soggy(under toasted). French toast had no flavor. Very disappointed. Not returning.

I ate here because I’m new to the area and I was dying for some local breakfast eats(i hate chain restaurants). The atmosphere inside is dated but clean. Our server had the personality of wet mop. She never have here name, she was very short and generally unfriendly. Even then, if the food was good, I would have been more forgiving. The food was not. In fact, it was terrible. The home fries were cold, hard and, tasteless. The pancakes, also cold, we’re grainy. The steak, tasteless but it was tender. My four year even mentioned that his food was«yucky». I don’t know how this place stays in business. I suspect it’s the octogenarian locals that have been coming here for years. Angelo, time to up your game because once your regulars age away, you’ll be out of business.

Visited for the first time yesterday. Quite a drive from north part of Gloucester County. I must say I was very disappointed in the food. One great feature is their huge salad, however, not all meals include a salad and the waitress may not inform you as such. I ordered the 8oz Delmonico. Special of the night was a 10oz prime rib. My steak was overdone and tough as shoe leather. My brother ordered the 10oz Delmonico and he said his was pretty good. Cooked to order. I asked for my fries lightly cooked and they came out barely cooked and greasy. The oil was not very hot. My sister-law’s prime rib was also over cooked. I visit a number of Greek owned restaurants that are along the same lines as this one but the food is much better, and I admit, cooking a fairly thin steak can be challenging to get it right. Another of our party ordered his prime rib med well and got it medium. The trick to this little problem is to have your grill screaming hot, sear those steaks quickly and they don’t have a chance to be overdone. This food wasn’t. I will stick to my favorite greasy spoons that are closer to my hovel and expect reasonable enjoyment. If I ever have the opportunity to return I’ll probably stick to the breakfast menu. Those reviews appear to be more acceptable. .

So, here is what I do not understand about the myriad of reviews here giving this place a bad rap — This place has been here longer than you. It’s not a Michelin star dining experience. You sort of know this walking in — unless you’re completely new to the area and even if you are — there’s a sign outside explaining just how long it’s been in existence which is a long ass time. I went with a colleague for lunch recently — my first time here. I loved it. Did I order steak? Well, no — why would you? Do you really think an incredible steak is less than $ 20? Come on, now. Don’t fool yourselves. This place is a greasy spoon — my friend even used a napkin to soak up her grease, it was that awesome. Think VFW without the haze of smoke. Think Mel’s Diner but sadly I couldn’t find Alice or Flo. Quick food, very inexpensive and it may not be the best meal on Earth but it has character and charm and they are doing something right. Enjoy. The cheeseburger was awesome and the fries are hella good!

Did not like the food at all. We went there for dinner and I ordered the steak. I couldn’t believe that they didn’t season any of the food. Everything was bland. I would not recommend this place.

Hate to be that guy that writes this review, especially since a business associate invited me to lunch as part of her good deed duties with a volunteer organization. I definitely got that«house» feel. Not house like a home-made dinner, a diner-like spot. I suppose this is the place to go when you start to get up there in age. Not sure why in the world I ordered their Delmonico steak. The gentleman sitting next to me had one and it actually looked pretty good. When I got my steak I realized I need A LOT of salt to get a meager taste out of the steak. I did order some green beans as an extra side(you only had one side and I chose baked potato) and was a bit saddened that I got something out of the can(although not surprised). Nothing good or bad but in comparison to other diners and house restaurants, there have been some better ones in my past.

Oh, old friend, how special you are. I just love this place. May be the most irrationally glowing review I’ll ever write. Too many good memories and solid meals here. Nothing ever takes long. Nothing is ever wrong. The staff is always kind. Whether you have been here 100,000 times or once, the experience never changes. I have been going here for years and love it every time. I’ve been with people who ordered just about everything off the menu, so I have sampled a fair bit. It is all fairly straightforward and solid. This is a place that knows exactly what it is and delivers time after time. Solid food, solid crowd, solid staff. Five stars feels right. My go to is the omelets, which are always solid. Everything here is pretty simple and to the point. Few frills because few frills are needed. Feels solidly Newport News and solidly Virginia, in the best way possible. It is usually pretty busy, but the restaurant is so large that getting seated is rarely an issue. Service is fast, food is tasty and the place feels like home. You may not get it until you go too many times to count.

Great place for a weekend breakfast stop. We had 3 kids and 3 adults… given a huge table in the back dining room. Breakfast was delicious, fast and our server was a sweet heart. Great coffee and the kids loved the hot chocolate. Looks like this place has huge parties and can accommodate. We appreciated the quick service, great meal and clean bathrooms!

Good food at a fair price. Best breakfast around. Lots of local trade. FYI, Meal tax in NN is 11.5 per cent for City and State taxes.

(surprisingly) Really good food, but potential sales tax scam? Was in town for a wedding and decided to stop in(on 06/06/2015) for some breakfast. I had the Grecian Omelet and my fiancée had the Spanish Omelet. The food came out great — cooked perfectly, not at all greasy or watery(which sometimes happens when frying eggs with tomatoes in them), and very tasty. The service was also very good, so no complaints with the food or service whatsoever. Now, coming from NY, I’m used to high sales tax. So when the bill came and the sales tax appeared to be over 10% of the total bill, I immediately got to wondering what the tax rate is in VA. According to the state’s official website«The general sales tax rate for Virginia is 5.3 percent(4.3 percent state tax and 1 percent local tax). There is an additional 0.7 percent state tax imposed in the localities that make up Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads, making the rate in these areas 6 percent(5 percent state tax and 1 percent local tax)» Now math was never my forte, so bear with me, but let’s go with 6%. The subtotal on my bill was $ 20.74 — at 6% the tax would be just about $ 1.25, right? Well, the actual tax on my bill was $ 2.80! So according to my calculations, that’s more than double the state rate! Being it was a fairly small bill I didn’t want to cause a big stink. But when paying, I did ask the cashier very politely«excuse me, but can you tell me what the VA state sales tax rate is?» To which her response was«$ 2.80 — it says it right there on the bill. Why, is there a problem?» I then proceeded to explain why I thought it was a bit high and the conversation ended with her saying something to the effect of «well, I wouldn’t be surprised by what the state of VA does to us»… It is entirely possible that my calculations are off, there is something I am missing, or it is an honest mistake, so please correct me if I am wrong. But I’d be willing to bet that this goes largely unnoticed and there may or may not be something fishy going on… So, 4 stars for the food, but knocking a couple off for the tax issue…

Went in with my Dad and we were seated promptly. People are very nice there. But then we waited about 10 minutes before anyone came back. The passing server took our drink order(water and coffee) and said she would check on who our server was. Another 5 – 7 minutes go by, no water, no coffee, no further contact… I walk up to the drink area and the server says she is brewing us new coffee and will be right out. Another few minutes go by… Still not even water. Parched, we got up and left.

So over the Holidays our work crew decided to give this place a try for breakfast. Good food, Good price and quick. Opens at 6am so it was just what we needed. Since then I’ve been back with the family for breakfast and had lunch with my sister there. The Club sandwich was awesome. not a fan of there fries. Need to switch them to steak fries and it would be perfect. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a little place to put some money back into the economy and not in the big corporates pocket.

Our Amateur radio club had a dinner/social here. The place was busy, as there were three parties going on. Our server was a bit harried(understandably so, with all of the business) but she did a good job of keeping up with us(and bleed over from one of the other groups). I had my order set and had to change it at the last minute, to a turkey and cheese sub. I had thoughts that I was going to get a processed turkey lunch meat sammich, and was totally surprised when I was served a sliced off of the breast turkey and cheese sammich. Rounded off with their french fries(at the local Greek restaurants, you always get a heaping pile of fries) and a side of onion rings. Everything I ordered was well prepared, and hot. Frankly, I was surprised. What I ordered and what I was served, was completely different than my expectations. And for once, it was not what I had thought was coming. Well done, Angelo’s.

I heard about this place on FB and decided to try it out last week for breakfast. From the outside, it doesn’t look like much and I was honestly expecting a hole in the wall. The good thing is there is lots of parking surrounding the entire building and for breakfast time it was packed! Inside it reminded me a bit of Belgian Wafflehouse off Warwick Blvd, the set up at least. A typical dinner with lots of booths, a bar and separated dining rooms. It looks a lot bigger on the inside than what I saw on the outside. And to my surprise it was super clean. The hostess was kinda pissy though. I asked if they took credit cards(since it seems mom n’ pop places around here don’t) and she just wiped around and said Uhhh yea! Anyway, we sat in one of the dining rooms in a table near the corner. No biggie, except there was tiny pieces of crumbs on my seat. The waitress came, she was very nice but a bit of a scatter brain. She was running all over the place… and she had three tables. Apprantely there was some beef between her and the hostess because they were giving each other daggers and the waitress subtly was trash talking her when my food arrived because the hostess didn’t give us butter. It was a tad awkward. Food wise, it is a large menu, but everything is fairly cheap. I ordered some sunny-side up eggs, with hash browns, toast and a side of grits. My sister ordered the vegetarian omelet which also came with hash browns. Sunny side up was good-simple. The hash browns looked promising because they were crispy but once I took a bit I noticed some rawness. Toast was your typical cheap ass white wonder bread smeared with magazine… eck. The grits were okay, a bit lumpy. I think the worse offender was the vegetarian omelet. They used that one cheese that doesn’t quite melt and retains its original form alongside canned mushrooms. It was a wet disaster. I hate to say it but I would not go back nor would I recomened this place for breakfast. I understand the whole low budget diner eating but nothing about this place was wholesome and filling :/

The two star rating and reviews don’t do Angelo’s justice. This place gives you exactly what you need. Decent food at good prices. The food is not the best, and the décor is not sexy. But the staff is friendly, and the food comes out pretty fast. What do people expect from a 40yr old diner in Newport News?! Everything about Angelo’s is satisfactory. If I lived in the area I would continually support Angelo’s over IHOP or Denny’s; not that I don’t like them, but I like supporting local businesses. Anyway, Angelo’s is a-ok thus the three star rating. I think any experience below three stars is an anomaly. I hate to discredit people’s experiences, because I’m aware that they are very real to them, but to the average person this place will be just fine.
