The Trough

Just walked out of the Trough sandwich kitchen after a whale watching trip. I didn’t know what to order, Laini, the server recommended the chasu pork sandwich. Wow! What a pleasant experience. It’s braised pork with pickled ginger, house kewpie mayo, baby arugula, on soft cornmeal roll. It was delicious. Laini was polite, and graciously answered the questions I had about the food. Reasonable prices Near the dock– close to fishing or whale watching Check it out. I think you’ll like it. Thanks, Laini. For the great service.

We tried 2 sandwiches, 2 side dishes and the home made cookies… everything was soooo good. They make home made sauces… I hate ranch but their homemade ranch is amazing… must try

Loved this place! Good music, modern setup, great sandwiches .
But what a shame for rude service. How are you going to show up with a wide ripped shirt to work. His attitude sucked, no thank you, no hi, no nothing. I really wish I would’ve gotten his name to speak to his manager or supervisor. Could’ve easily gotten 5 stars if it wasn’t for that imbecile.

Awesome! This place has some of the best tasting food in the area. customer service is very friendly with confidence and smiles. one of the finest cooks in the area is here. his name is Adam, a big bearded tough looking guy with a heart of gold. he really cares about your satisfaction. Lonnie provides an upper spirited energy, she is eager to make your visit enjoyable. the cost might be a dollar or two higher than you expect, but the quantity and quality is awesome! its like getting two meals in one. the place is very clean and well designed. I am a local and have tried several items on the menu. when people ask me «where is a good place to eat ?» I tell them, The Trough. they will take care of you and you will be satisfied

Not only does The Trough Sandwich Kitchen has the biggest variety of generously filled sandwich combinations on the Balboa Village FUN Zone planet but they also have a super friendly FUN crew that you should keep in mind for your next catered event, boat party or beach picnic delivery !!! I’ve already experienced their professional fast as lightening service 3 times and although everything I’ve tasted is fresh and delicious my personally favorite is still grilled cheese !!!

I had the Breakfast Burrito and Fried Chicken with Waffles, no regrets there :)
Its very hard to find a good hole in the wall in such a tourist infested place like this, but this one struck an eagle!
Now if only we had one of these in Vegas… They would bankrupt me :)

Ordered a Philly cheese steak. It came with some bell peppers and mushrooms, but it didn’t over power the taste of the meat and cheese, which tasted like a very classic cheese steak, how a cheese steak is supposed to be. While they didn’t skimp on the meat, I do think they could have added more for the price. It was 11.00 and the sandwich was only about 8 or 9 inches.
One thing that really blew me away was the cook whacked out the sandwich before I could even blink. Now THAT is quick service!
While not my favorite, they did serve up a really good sandwich!

Wow! This was a surprising find! I happened to be in the area and found this place right off the beach. I had the Tuna Salad Sandwich, and I can say that it was one of the best Tuna Sandwiches I have had. You have to try it if you like tuna.
The staff was friendly and helpful for suggestions. I will be back again!

The Trough has all the components for greatness: a menu featuring rock and roll flavor combinations, a modern leaning toward industrial interior, and friendly sandwich artists sporting man buns. It just isn’t putting it all together.
The food is 4 stars. My breakfast burrito with carnitas was huge and packed with fresh ingredients. But somehow it wasn’t packed with flavor. The ratios of the tots, eggs, pico, carnitas, and cheese were off. (Fewer tots, more eggs and pico, please.) It came with a side of salsa verde, which was okay. I added that AND Tabasco to dress the sandwich up. All in all, good, but I’d try something else next time. My bf got the caprese, which looked incredible.
Here’s where things go flat. We sat inside, and they were playing really loud, intrusive EDM. This is a beachside sandwich shop, not a lounge. The music did not fit at all. They have a TV that was showing a women’s hockey game. Huh? What could such programming possibly contribute to the ambience? The kicker for me is that they have no restrooms available to customers. We had just played flag football on the beach and wanted to wash our hands prior to eating. No dice. Not cool.
Not sure if I’ll return to sample some of the other menu offerings. If I do, I will be taking my fare to go.

After a long bike ride we decided to stop along Balboa Blvd for breakfast. We looked at the Mexican place next door. it was pretty busy but The Trough had good reviews so we thought we would give it a try.
The place is set up looking very «to go» verses come sit and hang out. You need to get over the sound of the vent greeting you at their front door because once you step inside you will be greeted by nice guys cooking delicious, creative, breakfasts.
My husband is celebrating his birthday so he broke his healthy eating habits and had the brioche French toast with pork belly served with maple syrup. He said it was magical!
I had a breakfast burrito with eggs, shredded beef, veggies, and tatter tots! It was delicious and I won’t need to eat till dinner!!!
All the packaging was well done and by the look of it, I’d say the owners are thinking about franchising. All in all, a great place for a quick bite.

This place is AMAZING! I had the Cali cowboy and it was delicious the bread was crisp and super good. Completely recommend this place to anyone who is looking to have a really good food! Also the orange juice is fresh and delicious. Love this place!

We had the spaghetti sandwich and the breakfast burrito (served all day). Both were delicious! The breakfast burrito was served with an outstanding spicy guacamole that really was a stand out. The spaghetti sandwich came on a cornmeal roll that added a little extra crunch.
We will come back when we are in the area for sure!

Delicious sandwiches!
I ordered the «California cowboy» which has chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato, house ranch on toasty sourdough bread. I added avocado and some siracha on the side to spice it up a little.
With a little barbecue sauce on the side, the sandwich was just what the doctor ordered! Couldn’t be happier with the quality. Each bite was absolutely delicious. The staff was super friendly. No bathroom inside but the «Great Mex» next door is incredibly friendly and they will happily let you use their restroom.
My friends ordered the vice and he was very pleased. The onion rings were very tasty too.
Definitely recommend popping in here for a scrumptious sandwich!

Got «The Vice» which was bomb. You like Carnitas, ham, Swiss, and great bread? If so, have this. Honestly loved my Sammie. So glad this came to my neighborhood. It’s pricy at $ 11.50 but I forgive because it’s so yummy

Ordered the bltc, the turkey club (no bacon) and Chili Cheese Tots. Everything was phenomenal! We would usually never come from Huntington Beach for lunch but this was highly recommended by Mad Hungry Woman (Anita Lau) and what an absolutely treat, this was a tasty, filling, well priced lunch. The restaurant has a cool vibe and the service was exceptional. We left satisfied and next time we’ll take others here! Thank you for a great Saturday lunch
