Sheared Sheep

It’s been five years since I shopped at Sheared Sheep. Whoa… yeah…where did the time go? The shop has so many beautiful yarns and everybody is friendly. You know how you visit some yarn shops and you’re either ignored or pressured to buy? Neither of those things happened here. Peggy, one of the owners, was so helpful and suggested yarns for the weight I was looking for, but I never got the feeling she’d be pissed if I didn’t buy. Yet, I wanted to, because I want to support local business whenever I can and because she was so nice. The shop is small and things are packed in there, but I happen to like yarn shops like that. A sweet place and I’d venture to say it’s the best yarn shop in the area, all round.

Owner is pleasant enough but employee was quick to take my $ 100 for yarn and not helpful at all getting my project started. She was impatient & treated me like a child. As a result I have not touched the project in 6 months & will not go back

Great store. Really friendly and helpful. I’ve been going there for years, and I walk out feeling happy and creatively inspired every time.

Loved this shop! Was in the area to visit with my BFF who flew to the area to see her son! We had a list off all the shops in the area! This was the number one shop! Love the great selection of yarn! Spent way more than I planned cuz of a beautiful Atenti Yarn bag that I had to have! We were on a yarn «high» after this shop! In fact, we had to go back the next day to buy more yarn! Great customer service! Don’t miss this shop!

Great little yarn store that’s tucked away in another strip mall. It wasn’t the easiest to find… It’s on the west side of Westcliff in the last strip mall going southbound before it turns into residential.
The store is located on the inside of the walkway and it was very cozy!
Staff was pleasant to deal with. Stock was much larger than Ewe+You and the store was darker here. They have a large table for community knitting but the yarns weren’t easily organized.
Colorways were on the two extremes, either extremely darks or loud brights.
Well decorated and welcoming store but the yarns didn’t seem very well curated compared to the other stores I frequent.

I love Sheared Sheep. The shop is small but neatly organized with a wonderful selection. Peggy and Shelby are fantastic and very helpful when you are trying to select the right type of yarn for a project. They have never steered me wrong. The yarn is not cheap but is a high quality product. For me that is important as I want something that looks good after I have spent countless hours on it. Also, Martha and Laura’s class are great, does not matter if you are a beginner or advanced student. Plus the women in the class are just awesome. Also, it is drop in which is great for my hectic lifestyle. ;). I never thought I would be able to knit half the things I do thanks to the owners, instructors and fellow students.

I took a class here and now I’m hooked. Beautiful yarn, nice, nice people and great teachers.

Not just my favorite knitting store, but just about my favorite place in Newport Beach. Run and frequented by the kindest, friendliest, and most welcoming people. If I ever have a problem understanding a pattern, fixing a mistake, or just need help finding a missing stitch there is always some one to help. I’ve made wonderful friends at Sheared Sheep.
Their yarn selection is also beautiful and of great quality.

I love to knit, but I’m not an expert by any means. I’ve got the garter stitch and stockinette stitch down pat which allows me to knit a headband, scarf and, if I’m feeling especially ambitious and patient, a baby blanket. A recent visit to Sheared Sheep finds me wanting to tackle more advanced knitting projects such as this:

The owner of Sheared Sheep is lovely. She greeted me warmly at the door and instructed me to let her know if I had any questions. I love that there is absolutely no pressure to buy anything at Sheared Sheep; you are allowed to explore, admire and touch the beautiful yarns as you please.
Yarns at Sheared Sheep are expensive to say the least — one particular skein of wool yarn I noticed cost $ 25. However, I should mention that Sheared Sheep’s selection of yarns are unmatched in terms of quality and durability compared to yarns available at your local craft store. I’m not sure how often Sheared Sheep runs sales, but the day I was here, the store was offering 30% off regular price on certain yarns. The store also offers knitting classes and I had the opportunity to observe an intermediate-​advanced knitting class in-​session as students worked on various projects.

Why we gave it 3 stars:
1. The people seemed very nice.
2. The store was cozy and well organized.
3. There was very little stock and the store was tiny.
4. I’d love to see them move into a larger space.

Cute, cozy shop with huge selection of high end yarns. But the prices are high (consider the location and the rent). Wish the prices were a little lower, but its nice to go in to see and touch the yarn which you can’t do if you by yarn on the internet.

Went into their new location today. Super cute! The store has an open, light vibe. Not only did the owner make me feel welcome, but the group of social knitters sitting around the table did too. It said a lot to me because having a group that is THAT friendly tells me how much they love the store. I instantly regretted not bringing my knitting with me or I’d have pulled up a chair and joined them.
The owner disengaged from the social knitters and sat behind the register as I shopped. I liked it because it let me know who I could ask questions without having her pounce on me and trail me around the store.
I chose some handpainted yarn and some Cascade. The owner chatted amiably with me as she totalled my purchases. The one downside is that they didn’t have a bumpin’ly big inventory, still the positive vibe will bring me back.
RECOMMEND

I walked in here looking for a specific type of yarn for my knitting project. When I first walked in Peggy was helping another customer, and two patrons were sitting at the long table in the store busily knitting. I felt a bit awkward and looked around at the yarn for a couple minutes. Peggy quickly finished with her customer and proved to be a great help in finding what I needed. She was knowledgeable and happy to help. Wonderful service.
I think the store itself is pretty cute: small, inviting, cozy, and surrounded with walls of colorful yarn. I would definitely come back here again because it’s one of those independent stores I’d like to support. Plus I think the more one goes, the more one appreciates it’s atmosphere.

The new location at Westcliff is charming. I stopped by on the grand opening day and talked with sweet Lisa. A group of knitters sat around the table and someone else who worked there – I didn’t get her name – was friendly and funny. I like that no one pressures you to buy. Some very pretty yarns and old standbys. New knitters will especially like the shop as you will receive easy guidance and good company.

The new location is fantastic! and as usual the staff is there to help and please. The new lighting and extra windows gives the shop an open feeling. Love all the new knitted projects on display. Worth driving the extra 2 miles to have a shop that has great instructors and yarn to die for!

Difficult to find from the outside; no visible sign near the street to indicate presence of store in shopping area (we almost gave up – we thought the business closed down). The shop was to the right of a karate school, and marked YARN.
Inside, the store is nice and quaint. It is not a big shop; the inventory available was less than what I expected/​hoped. There was a lot of cotton/​linen yarn available at this visit, perhaps in anticipation of summer, while I was looking more for silk, bamboo, and wool blends.
Although the sales woman at the counter seemed friendly to other customers, she somewhat ignored me. Although she did greet me briefly upon entering the store. Perhaps I exuded vehement independence or I seemed too scary. However, when I asked for help for a bamboo yarn in dark purple, she did assist me politely.
I did not purchase anything, although I did drool over the selection of Crystal Palace bamboo needles.
While on vacation from the SF Bay Area, this was my first visit to this store.

After reading the other reviews of this shop I was a little disappointed on my first visit. Everyone was friendly but nothing out of the ordinary. They do have a great selection and its smaller so you can get more help. It was on my third and forth visits that I really started to appreciate the this place.
I live no where near this shop but being remembered and knowing you can get some advice when you need it is worth the drive for a novice!

Stopped by to buy some specific yarn called for in various patterns out of current popular knitting magazines but they had none of the yarn I needed and no equivalent substitutes with same gauges. Was sorry to leave empty handed as I love supporting these little yarn shops — if we don’t, then we’ll all be stuck with only big chains like Michaels with cheap yarn and that would be a miserable knitter’s existence.
No complaints about service. Was happily helped by a lady behind the counter while there was a knitting gathering going on in the store. All my questions were answered.

As with the other reviewers, I think the service here is amazing. There are so many yarn shops where you walk in and feel like you’re intruding on a close-​knit group of friends, and the people who work at the store don’t try to make you feel different. Totally not the case at the Sheared Sheep. Everyone that works here is lovely… so nice and friendly, and incredibly helpful. They also have a great selection of yarns at reasonable prices.
During my last visit, I ended up buying some bamboo yarn and Lisa showed me an adorable baby dress that was knitted from the same yarn. I loved it, so I called her today to ask for the pattern and she immediately offered to email it to me since it’s not convenient for me to drop in. See, they are SO NICE! I’ve never had that level of service from a yarn store before.

The service here is AWESOME. Everyone greets you at the door and makes sure that they know your name before you leave. They don’t ever pressure you to buy any yarn, so you can feel free to browse around as you please. They even stuff the shopping bags with tissue paper for that little extra cuteness!
Lisa and Shelby are great! I recently spent TWO hours there, picking out the perfect yarn for all my Christmas knitting presents and Lisa gave me the low down on the best yarns for my specific projects.
If you ever need help on a project, there is always someone there to help you out. I’d go during the weekday though because this place was very busy when I checked them out on a Saturday morning with knitters in every seat!
The Sheared Sheep even has this cute sign inside that says «Knit Faster, Buy more Yarn» that just cracks me up. This small, intimate and cozy yarn shop that really make you want to grab a chair and start knitting right away.

The service at The Sheared Sheep is second to none. Even the people who aren’t working there are happy to help you, and have helped me. The selection is good, and is primarily catered to sweater and scarf knitters but they do carry a few varieties of sock yarn. There are no hand-​dyed rolls of yarn here, but they actually referred me to another store. Any establishment that is so kind with their customers to give referrals is A+ in my book.
There is a very kind community of knitters always in the shop on the weekends. Once I get older, I’ll probably join them :-).

I went there for the first time here.
When I decided to visit the shop on a whim, it was already 3:50pm, and I knew that they close at 4pm. I got there and sheepishly asked if they were closing soon. Well, the owner, Shelby, pleasantly replied that she was staying there for a while anyway. There were several shoppers there too.
I ended up getting just a skein but it was like the best 30 minutes I’ve spent all week. The shop was very cozy, everything looked lively, and welcoming.
I’d LOVE to go back very soon. =) It’s relatively small, but yarns are very neatly organized. There are some knitting books (not alot but the popular ones are there). Very relaxing environment.

It is indeed very small, and easy to miss D: The Sheared Sheep is located in a tiny little strip mall in Irvine, and there’s no indication of it when driving by whatsoever, but it’s a beautiful little shop. Decent yarn selection, but less than Los Alamitos Yarn Co. and Liscat. However, the owner is super nice and helpful, and I like the environment and the knitting circle here. I got a good bit of a chuckle just from what I overheard while browsing through the store.

This is «the place to be» if you are into knitting and all things yarn. The owner of the shop, Shelby, is a wonderful hostess helping everyone that is there with their various projects while utilizing her own talents to produce cute one off scarfs, hats, baby clothes and various other things. She also has a great sense of humor and it is almost like going to knit in the Comedy Store.
