This was our go to place for food and staples en route to beach at Plum Island. They had ready made sandwiches that were as good as it gets and inexpensive. Two sandwiches on specialty breads(pretzel roll for one) and a home made muffin was under 15. Sandwiches run between 5 – 6 dollars. Can get sandwiches made fresh as well as egg sandwiches too. One delicious choice was a rollup with pepper jack cheese, lettuce tomato and buffalo chicken and banana peppers. It was one of best combinations I have had. They are open t 5 am and stood in line at 7 am with several folks heading to work

First off, I’m a regular here and don’t post reviews often. It takes quite a special place for that to happen. With the Black Duck, you’re not getting«a convenience store». You’re getting a one stop shop for fresh brewed coffee, a decent selection of news papers, if you’re old school like(moi) that; a comfortable layout that isn’t overstocked and always full but manages to stay clean; and the best deli bar in town. I work nearby overnights and early mornings, and whatever time it is, these guys have my dietary back with fresh salads, a fully stocked ice cream selection, and quite possibly the best breakfast sammich you can find. Their owner comes from 30 minutes away every morning at 4 – 5 A.M. and manages to be smiling and pleasant. It’s just a really special place. If the massive collection of rubber duckies doesn’t give it away. Plum Island has Mr. MOE’S, we Newburyport townies have the Duck.

This thoughtfully-managed establishment offers many conveniences, delicious, innovative food, and a fun atmosphere. The staffers are very friendly. Ask Liam to tell you a joke.

I wanted to tell you how much I love my «duck family». I know i’m not part of the«family» per say but on Thursday I was looking for the worlds greatest chicken noodle soup and it wasn’t there that day. I went over to get a soda and said«ahhh no chicken noodle» and Scott and the girls said they would make it for me today. I went over and there it was, a steaming hot tray of chicken noodle soup. Also Alana knows i’ve been looking for a «Jamie» diet coke and she came up to me when I was in line and said, «I know this isn’t a diet coke but I found a Jamie on a coke bottle and saved it for you». Seriously, all of the duck family over there treats me like I am a part of the family. So I love you guys to the moon and back and I hope you all know that!

Every time I’m in a baking pinch and I go to the black duck, they have never disappointed me. They seem to have a little of everything! Don’t expect the small weird grocery items to be competitively priced, but you pay for the sheer convenience. The staff there are incredibly friendly. They make you feel like a regular, even if its your second time in ever. Love the location, the prices are okay, I’m a fan of the stocked goods, and the people are great. Not much else to say!

I love the play on words that poke fun at White Hen. This is the one thing that downtown Newburyport sorely needed, a convenience store on the Tannery side of downtown. While not from the area, I have acted in and directed several shows at The Actor’s Studio, also located in the Tannery. This place is a god send for people like me. On days when you have a cast of a dozen actors who all want to indulge their vices of coffee, energy drinks, soda, or need something to eat on a quick fix, I used to have to send them scattering all over downtown Newburyport pointing out the general direction of «Hey there is a pizza place over there with slices» or «yeah they have smoothies at that place I can’t remember the name of.» It’s far, far easier to send them down to the Black Duck. Those actors can be a fussy bunch. They’ve also eliminated the need for me to sprint down 4 blocks in the rain for bags of ice and concessions after a busy show intermission. The sandwiches are good too! Pleasant staff and all the needs you want crammed into a very small space, but this place has proven a lifesaver for anyone working in the Tannery, us Actor’s Studio folks especially.

Great store. Friendly service, sandwiches, good ice cream selection, good coffee. All the things you’d want in a convenience store!

When the Pond Street White Hen Pantry closed in April 2010, most of us saw it as a huge loss — we depended on that store for late night emergency runs for staples like bread and milk and snacks/munchies, an emergency stash of pet food, morning coffee, and everything in between. I could not have imagined that the outcome of that sad day would be this wonderful shop… it has all of the White Hen neighborhood goodness and so much more. First, although it’s not open 24/7, it’s open very early(at 5AM) and serves customers until 11PM, so they are able to meet the needs of the early morning coffee bingers, late night food cravings, and everything you’ve come to expect from your neighborhood grocery-sandwich place. You can get groceries — all the typical convenience store items — plus wine and beer, coffee, coffee, and more varieties of coffee, pastries and assorted fresh sweets, a couple of soup offerings, sandwiches(ready made or made to order), salads, and some of the best paninis in the Port City. I always get the roast beef panini(I think it’s #6) and for the extra few dollars, go for the gold and order the large one. It’s twice the size(literally) of the«half» for a very little bit more $$, and enough for two generous meals. In fact, it’s so large, they actually wrap it in two separate packages. You can share with a lunch mate or enjoy it two days in a row. They heat up beautifully in the microwave too, btw. Friendly, family owned and operated, if you patronized White Hen, you’ll see some familiar faces. And when you need that pretzel fix, you can get that and a sandwich long after every other sandwich shop has rolled up the sidewalk in front of their doors. I gave it a 5 only because that’s the max you can give on Unilocal.but if I could have, I’d have given them a 10. It was truly a delightful surprise to find the Pond Street White Hen reincarnated here!

If you live in the South End of Newburyport and need a few things, the Black Duck is located at the Tannery and is open early and late every day. Check them out.

The Black Duck is a welcome addition to the Tannery. They’ve got an array of pre-made sandwiches or will make you something to order. They have a variety of daily soups as well as meatball subs, which I crave! There are various healthy and not-so-healthy snacks, as well as convenience items like milk, bread, etc. Great ice cream selection(which I have not yet succumbed to). Also, lottery, coffee, beer and wine… pretty much everything you’d expect to find in a convenience store, but nice enough to be in the Tannery, which can be pretty darn high end! Staff are all friendly and prices are very reasonable. I work in the Tannery so I stop by frequently for lunch — it’s my new go-to spot for both the variety of items available and affordability.
