Rex Hill Vineyards-Winery

I walked into the tasting room on Tuesday afternoon, with a friend, to try some Rex Hill wine… There was only one couple at the counter, and the employee chatting with them. We stood at the counter to taste, and waited to be greeted, yet after standing there for several minutes, our presence was never acknowledged… We decided to leave and won’t return.

We really enjoyed the wine and the grounds here. The staff was friendly and accomodating. I wish the wine and the wine club were more in our price range!

Beautiful tasting room. Great environment for wine tasting. Staff also took the time to explain the differences of each wine despite there being quite a lot of customers.

Jonathan was amazing and because of his service and detailed tasting most of us gals on the girls trip ordered wine and has it shipped back home. Thank you!

The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Their reds are absolutely amazing and it’s hard to choose your favorite. The garden is pretty and perfect for a photo op.

We’re huge fans of A to Z wine, which is made at Rex Hill. But aside from a t-​shirt and a small display, you won’t find anything on A to Z here. They explain that they only provide tasting of Rex Hill ($ 10 for a tiny sip of four Rex Hill wines) because A to Z is available almost everywhere and they want to push the Rex Hill label. Hey… what about loyalty? Rex Hill lovers will find minimal satisfaction (no tour) and A to Z lovers will be totally disappointed. Tsk, tsk.

Awesome! Beautiful grounds, beautiful interior and awesome wine! Karen was SUPER helpful, patient, knowledgeable and willing to share a lot of information to make the experience much more enjoyable. They also have a full circle of glass with different aromas in them so as you taste the wine you can try to pick out the different flavors/​aromas, which is very helpful for folks trying to learn the finer points of wine appreciation. The building has some cool history to it as well. This was our first stop and I withheld my review until we had completed the day and had time to reflect and I will say that this was my favorite and there is stiff competition in the valley! Looking forward to sharing a sip again soon!

To start I’ll say that the wines aren’t bad here. I actually enjoyed the bottle of Rose that we purchased quite a bit. If it were only the wine I was rating I’d give 4 stars but the tasting room experience was pretty disappointing.
We had a group of 5 and all ordered tasting flights and started tasting. When the woman pouring for us came over and started explaining the wines to us we tried to politely explain that we’re winemakers ourselves and that we didn’t really need that much direction but she continued with her pitch anyways. That’s fine with me– that’s part of selling wine.
The part that was frustrating was that when we went to purchase some wine we ended up waiting for quite some time for them to find the bottles we had requested (also not a big deal) and then upon presenting them to us we were thrown a curve ball: Another woman working behind the counter was asked to confirm that the price of the bottle was the advertised price (The price listed on the sheet of prices that we had been provided with) because it was different in the system. To make a long story short, she snapped at the woman who was helping us and rudely asked us «Do you want it or not. It is $ 70 a bottle. The sheet that you have is wrong» and she stood with a frown staring at us.
I shook my head and said I’d take it simply because we needed to buy SOMETHING to avoid paying for all of our tasting flights and because the nice woman had gone out of her way to find it for me. POINT BEING– if you advertise a price, honor it. Don’t make the customer feel like a jerk, snap at a co-​worker, and charge a higher price– especially after they’ve waited 20 minutes for it! To top it off, one of the bottles we bought didn’t make it into the box and we had to go back to retrieve it from behind the counter. Poor customer service… Decent wine. Hopefully you can have better luck than we did!
**** I will say– 90% of the reason for the poor review is one employee so hopefully other experiences prove to be more positive.

I love A to Z wines, they are so approachable, very well priced, under $ 20, so you can’t go wrong, when in a hurry, I always pick one of their wines. I learned that Rex Hill produces A to Z so I wanted to visit them. They were tasting one white and two Pinot Noirs from their Rex Hill line, which is their «upscale» line. The one I remember is the Alloro Pinot Noir, it was very good. I only wish they would have had a rose among their choices, I love a good rose in the summer. Leanne was very helpful and even recommended some places for us to visit as well as restaurant to eat. The tasting room is really nice and on top of everything you get a bonus with your Unilocal check in, 50% off your tasting fee. Score!

I had no idea they do classes, but we signed up for the farmer’s market and wine pairing. Very very fun and informative! They do classes from Spring into Fall. They price was very reasonable also. We learned what wines go best with fish, meat, etc… Good times!

My wife & I were quite excited to check this tasting room out as family and friends rave about the wine & service provided by Rex Hill.
The grounds are absolutely gorgeous. Vineyards backing up to the tasting room with a garden right in the middle. The tasting room was very warm and welcoming. I would assume it would be a great place for a party or event.
The wine was amazing, as usual. The Rex Hill line of Pinot’s are just delightful. Very full body and complex with a wonderfully easy finish on the pallet. This is what we KNEW we were going to get.
So, why 3 stars? The service was not good at all. Two tasting room associates were on the job. The one that helped us simply gave us the spiel on the particular wine and then walked away. The other girl would not stop talking, REALLY loud about a couples engagement. Ok we get it, it’s wonderful and exciting that they got engaged but. Hello, there are a few other couples hoping to get assistance here! It was just not personable at all. I will go back with a hopeful attitude and maybe join the wine club. But this time, it was in & out for us. Not how a wine tasting experience should go.

Lovely lovely grounds here. Gardens, terraced picnic tables and a pizza oven. This place seemed like an awesome place for a party.
We arrived for a tasting on a Thursday afternoon. There is a large door that leads to a large, elegantly decorated tasting area. To the left is a long narrow cave where a wine class was being held.
The wines were some of the best I tasted during our day trip. We tasted a Chardonnay, some pinots and a red blend. I liked them all with the single-​vineyard pinots and Chardonnay being the standouts. Our pourer was super friendly and welcoming. I enjoyed chatting with her. We walked out with a handful of bottles and enjoyed a picnic on one of their tables. Love you Rex Hill!

This was our first stop on our tour of the Willamette Valley and it was a great way to start the tour. This place had a really nice tasting room and grounds. The best part was definitely the staff. They were very accommodating and friendly. They explained the history of the winery and were very knowledgeable about the wines. The pinots here are very good and the prices, as I found out later, were the best value I was going to receive in the valley. The 2010 pinot is the way to go. It is a little more expensive but definitely worth it. The whites they had were ok, nothing special. The semi sparkling Moscato was actually not bad. I don’t want to like Moscato because it is very cliché, but I did like this one.
I am from the east coast and it is nice to know that I can obtain these wines in MD and VA and even PA. They bottle under the name A to Z and the price points are great. Their bottle of A to Z Pinot is only like 16 bucks. Unbeatable price for a good quality pinot. Overall this was a great place to start a tour in the Valley; it was sort of like getting your feet wet before you really got into the water!

You can’t find more of an idyllic spot then where Rex Hill Vineyards sits. The interior of the Rex Hill Winery, is that of a forgotten time, where craftsmen new what they were doing. Rex Hill purchased the building from an old fruit and nut depository. The rails are still in the floor where they pushed the bins from point «A» to point «B».
There wine service is friendly, helpful and not precocious at all. The gentleman who served us was all personality. The wine flight was excellent, and for those who read this review, when you check in on Unilocal,you get a %50 off your flight, a very good deal. Regardless, though I would got this flight for what ever price they wanted. They had a Chardonnay at $ 78.00 a bottle on the list, and it was well worth it. I wish I could find more Chard’s like that!
I’m now a fan, good wine, good service, wonderful ambiance!

The fact that I mentioned the Unilocal deal to Herbert, I thought he would want to give great service because of the potential review on Unilocal.Maybe it was the fact that I mentioned the half-​off tasting for my Unilocal check-​in that led him to decide that I was not a serious wine drinker enough to explain what he was pouring in my glass. He was definitely more attentive to other people.
I sensed he treated me differently, or quickly judged me by my appearance and concluded that I was not sophisticated enough to drink their wine. I couldn’t help but know exactly this familiar feeling when you notice you are being treated or spoken to differently from others at a restaurant.
The only reason I visited this winery is based on their high reviews on Unilocal,not based on word-​of-​mouth or referral from anyone I know.
He poured wine first to the Caucasian guests who arrived later than me and Herbert took the time to explain to them what exactly he was pouring and then looked at me as if he forgot I was standing there.
He poured mine soon after as an afterthought and said «it’s fruity» and then quickly walked away and moved on to the next person.
This is exactly what I don’t like about the wine tasting experience. The snootiness and judgement that comes from some people.
He almost ruined my first winery wine tasting experience in the Willamette Valley until I visited two other wineries where I experienced kindness and hospitality that I am accustomed to when visiting a tasting room.
I have been to tasting rooms in Lodai, Santa Barbara County, Sonoma, Napa, Hunter Valley (Australia), Tyler (Texas), Tain L’Hermitage (France) and this was the worst experience ever in my life. Of all the wine tastings I’ve experienced, this was the worst ever. People are usually very kind and helpful when tasting or buying wine.

Go directly to Domaine Drouhin, White Rose Estate, and Four Graces tasting rooms instead. It’s all about the people in the tasting room that represent the winery. If they don’t good people working the wine tasting rooms, they can ruin anyone’s wine tasting experience.

This was our first winery stop on our list. Was easy to find since it was right off the freeway. Wasn’t the greatest looking winery from the outside, but the inside was welcoming. We opted for the regular $ 10 tasting flight, which consisted of Pinot Gris, 3 types of Pinot Noir, and the Semi-​Sparkling Oregon Muscat. They are known for their Pinots, but none of them excited me. The one that was memorable was the muscat.
You can walk outside their balcony and sit, but there isn’t much of a view so better to sit inside.

Rating Rex Hill Winery is hard. Do I focus on the tasting room experience? The grounds? The wine itself… which changes from year to year?
Wait, never mind. It’s not hard at all. It’s all 5-​star. Rex Hill has been making great wines since 1982. Currently producing under three imprints — Rex Hill, A to Z and Francis Tannahill — pretty much everything they make is exceptional. Sure, you’ll pay for the main Rex Hill label wines, but they’re worth it. Especially the stuff from Shea vineyard, which is a personal favorite. Even the more accessible, entry-​level A to Z stuff is super solid for the price. And if you have the pleasure of encountering a short-​release one-​off like the 2011 Rose of Pinot Noir, snag some. It’s probably quite good.
The location couldn’t get much more convenient, right on 99W as you’re heading toward Newberg. The grounds are very nice and have ample space for events and the like. The tasting room staff are plenty friendly too. And the space itself has a great design with lots of informative displays showing off geography and terroir of the region. A good spot to get acquainted with how the Valley works.
I definitely recommend a stop here, and the wines even more so.

Every time we walk in, we are greeted by name; they bring out the tasting glasses and start pouring. They even remember what we do for work and ask how is business. I love that personal touch. This is always our first stop whenever we head into wine country for an afternoon of wine tasting.
The winery itself is beautiful. I have been fortunate enough to have attended one of their winery tours when they pair their wines with appetizers and the hors d’œuvre they serve are always top notch. During the tour they will educate you on where the wine making grapes come from, when they are picked, how they are stored, how long they are stored, and when a bottle of wine is at its peak.
I am a fan of their wines and the wines themselves are affordably priced. If you are a wine club member you get a discount on the wine and the wine tasting is no charge for you and a guest. You also get invited to special events at the winery throughout the year.
With every visit I am always impressed by the friendliness and the excitement these folks have for their craft and how willing they are to share their knowledge with us.
I love that we always get a taste of things to come and wines that are not on the tasting menu. As always, Rex Hill delivers a stellar wine tasting experience.
