George Fox University – Newberg Campus

I came here for one year and:
Not that great a school, especially for the price.
Pros:
The food (at times)
Cons:
mandatory chapel
pathetic floor/​visitation hours
etc…
Not recommended

I wish I could give the administration and professors different stars because the profs would get 5 and the administration would get 2 (Student Life would get 1 star).
I graduated from GFU a while ago and many things have changed since then, particularly physically with the construction of new buildings. The campus is really nice and I liked the small-​school feel. I still keep in touch with my professors and look forward to some of the alumni events.
I would recommend this university because of the quality of education they would receive.

I attended Foxy George a few years ago, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree. I was very involved, as a House Manager, among other things. Here are some observations I have:
1) the students tend to be more strict/​traditional than a lot of the professors. This may be because some of the professors are Quaker, while most of the students are non-​denom/​baptiist/​etc. I enjoyed my religion/​theology classes because the professors who taught them seemed open minded, non-​judgmental, and were just generally cool, nice people.
2) if you’re not a christian, OR you’re not a baseball player, this is probably not the right place for you, unless you are interested in becoming a Christian. Some of my friends who were there were Catholic, and they seemed to generally enjoy themselves, but occasionally got annoyed/​frustrated with other students, or got tired of the chapel services which are very protestant in nature.
3) the quality of the education is good. there are a few prof’s who seem a bit bored with their job and just want to shock the students, a few who seem a bit self-​righteous and have a political agenda, and there are a few outstanding ones who obviously LOVE teaching and love their subject matter. like any other place.
4) This is not a good place for people who are social drinkers, or who want to have sex before they’re married, because you’ll feel judged, and you could get in trouble if you’re caught. You are asked to sign something saying you will not do those things while studying at GFU. Obviously, some people break the rules, but it is not accepted well by the general community. Also, there were no openly «out» people while I was there, even though I know some who have come out since graduating. I’m just telling it like it is– you will either like this atmospherre, or you won’t. I liked it some of the time, in the beginning, but towards the end I was sort of done with the rules.
the staff are friendly and down-​to-​earth, but again, if you are not christian, or if you are uncomfortable with RA’s potentially trying to get you to become more religious/​hard-​core than you already may be, you might start to dislike this place. don’t come here just because your parents want you to. Parents, don’t force your kids to come here. In my case, I wanted to go but my parents didn’t want me to, in part because it’s so expensive, but I’m glad it was MY choice.
By the by, the junior’s abroad program is wonderful! I also did a semester abroad in Spain and highly recommend it!
