I never really liked shopping in any of the seabra’s due to the fact that half the products are expired and the ones on sale are expired for months… always check the dates! Meat I will never buy there ever since I saw them taking out the old sticker and putting a new one with a new date. So damn nasty. It’s not fresh meat like everyone thinks it is…

Their produce and meat are so much cheaper and fresher than the competitor. They have lots of Portugese and Brazilian products on their shelves. There is never a line to check out. You cannot go wrong here.

Last January, I was trudging along in the cold Jersey winter to the tiny little Seabra’s on Pacific, feeling exceptionally sorry for myself and wondering whether moving to Newark was the brilliant idea I had previously thought. The ice made biking to the North Ironbound impossible, and even Nasto’s loses some appeal when the air is colder than the ice cream. In the middle of these thoughts, a green and white sign caught my eye. Was that a Seabra sign? This far south? I walked the extra block to investigate, and as soon as I turned into the parking lot I saw it. Where once there was a strip of empty brick storefronts from one of the many failed attempts to revitalize Newark, there now stood a shining new grocery store. The golden glow surrounding it was probably just my imagination, but you can never be sure. I went in and found a full-​sized produce area, nice wide aisles, a staggering array of affordable seafood, and an entire section just for aged Portuguese and Brazilian cheeses. A brand-​new, full-​sized grocery store in the central Ironbound. I should never have doubted you, Newark.
Pros: clean, bright, and spacious; cheap produce; good seafood selection; friendly staff, interesting Mediterranean and South American foods
Cons: doesn’t have much in the way of high-​end American products (no fancy chocolate bars), and practically nothing organic. Sometimes produce is a little old and ice cream is freezer-​burned, so check carefully.
In short, it’s not perfect, but it’s just what the neighborhood needed.
