Specialties

Pic-​Nic Café Restaurant located at 233 Ferry Street in Newark, was established in 1975 as a Portuguese coffee shop where you could get a good espresso, some pastries & sandwiches. The most important was getting Portuguese newspapers flown daily from Portugal and picked from Kennedy Airport upon airplane arrival.

It was a twice-​weekly trip to the Kennedy Airport for the latest printed news. The Portuguese community was consisting of old immigration and the very recent from Portugal, Mozambique and Angola. In 1982 Mr. Castelo opened the first in Newark open pit BBQ serving traditionally prepared chicken and ribs.

Pic-​Nic was very popular with Portuguese community and later on with new immigrants from Brazil and other countries from Central and South America. Today it serves all the local population and people from surrounding towns and suburbs. We are very proud to offer grilled chicken, ribs, steaks, fish, cod fish (bacalhau) and traditional Portuguese dishes.

I ordered from Picnic Restaurant around 12:49PM today and the delivery estimate said 2PM. It’s 5PM and I still don’t have my food or any indication that they’re even on their way. I tried calling the restaurant to just cancel the order but there is no answer. Is there a way to get my $ 20.54 back? Thanks. I personally don’t give a rat’s butt if it’s snowing, if that’s the angle they’re going to give me. They decided to open. They accepted orders. At least nut up and call me to tell me I’m not getting anything and that I should find another way to find some food. One star is too good for Picnic Restaurant.

Whatever you do with this please do not eat in the dining room it is absolutely horrible!!!
The takeout food is very tasty and delicious however the services absolutely poor. If you walk in and someone Portuguese is next to you they will serve them before they serve you. Be prepared for bullshit!
I will never eat at this place again nor will ANY NEW YORK GIANT PLAYERS.

Who knew when I got to my airport hotel and was given a bunch of takeout menus I would find such a gem? Actually ordered half order of salmon with vegis and was not only a great deal but a solitary delicious. Highly recommend when you want something healthy, reasonable and filling

I wanted to like this place, but takes too long to get food (about 1hr deliver via grubhub), sandwich orders on grub hub start off plain. And you have to specify if you want lettuce, tomatoes, mayo, etc. That’s backwards. We got 5 sandwiches with bread and chicken/​steak. It was half the size of the picture of the sandwich here on Unilocal.I provided my pic as well. Guy on phone tried to make it better by offering a free salad but I declined. Fries were a little soggy and to add, the driver was yelling at me that he didn’t understand english when I advised that he has to come to the other side of the building.

No parking once so ever around, you will be lucky to find one, place was pretty packed in the front for to go orders, and the back had many seated people, it’s self seat, so I set at table one. A lady came and gave me the menu, I browsed it for a bit and went with the beef ribs, bbq chicken, rice, and fries… the portion was HUGR, I destroyed it all like a savage lol… Total was about 23ish dollars… left 30 $…food was great! A must try if you’re in the downtown Newark area!

came here after a recommendation. A lot of people waiting in Newark, a lot of traffic, in and out.
Food took a little long, but was good. You can feel the fresh meat done per order. Orders are huge, so come hungry…
Service is a little slow but on the other end, they don’t rush you either to leave, so you can eat, relax, eat again, relax, have a talk, etc.

Food was really really good! Best shrimp in garlic sauce I’ve had in Newark. The rice was really good didn’t stay inside I ordered takeout. I do love that they place is Byob. The only downside is parking which was very difficult. Great place try it out and if you get the chicken MAKE sure you ask for garlic sauce as it comes just plan with garlic on it.

Picnic barbecue … Man o man! $ 8 of pure deliciousness. I’m very picky with my rice and Portuguese rice is just not my fav. but besides that everything at this spot was on point.
Miss being in Newark for these type of spots. Cheap, big portions, and bangin. Many people pick up and go but they have a decent sit down area for those wanting lunch/​dinner. You can tell décor isn’t a priority but when you’re serving good food, I wouldn’t care much either. The servers and staff in the front are all friendly.
My supervisor took me out for lunch and we shared the half chicken special, with rice, fries, and a huge salad. I felt like we ate so much but we still had enough to take home. That’s how big the portion was for «half chicken». Awesome spot to get a delicious meal that won’t break the bank.

It is SO yummy! The chicken is delicious and grilled to perfection. The sides (rice and fries) are served very generously, however, they aren’t as remarkable as the chicken. The Beans are the bees knees! SO GOOD! I’ve only ever ordered take out here and each time it has been fast and the person answering the phone is always cheery, polite and super helpful.
It is very affordable and you get a lot for your money.
You can’t go wrong with this place.

Growing up around Newark, and being Portuguese, I’ve eaten here all my life. Admittedly, they’re dead even for my favorite place, tied with Elm St BBQ. Picnic isn’t as good for chicken or ribs (but still very good), but where they shine is their suckling pig on weekends and the great tasting chouriço. Also, this is Newark, so they also have great prices.

The bread was cold and not fresh and when we asked to have it warmed up she refused, saying they didn’t have a microwave or oven. The food was ok, we had the combo with rice and fries and it fed all four of us. We also had the shrimp in garlic sauce which was a good appetizer. The service was ok. The lady was very attentive at the beginning but fell off towards the end. Nothing great but not too bad either. Didn’t like the chicken, was too dry and had a slight fish taste stuck to it.

Got the half chicken which comes with two sides (plenty of food). I got rice and veggies. The veggies were bland, 0 seasoning but the chicken and rice was great, the skin had plenty of flavor and the meat was very tender and juicy. Good find for lunch!

Delicious food, with ample portions and they even have Fado performances on some Saturday nights! I went here with my boyfriend and mom just last night and had an excellent experience! We ordered the bacalao, the sausage, and the picanha, garlic shrimp and a house salad. The bacalao was delicious, cooked in the traditional portuguese style with potatoes and vegetables. For dessert I recommend the flan or the chocolate mousse I would absolutely come back and here and bring friends with me! Great food!

I placed an order on grubhub at 12:30 with an expected delivery time between 1:30 to 1:40. When 2:00pm came around and still no food, I decided to give them a call. A woman picked up and had a hard time finding my info on their computer. Eventually she found my information and claimed the delivery driver had come to my apartment but no one was there. I clearly put in the instructions for the driver to call me but he didn’t. Then she said that my food will be delivered to me in 10 minutes. 20 minutes went by and I called again, this time the lady told me that all her delivery drivers were still not back. At this point I canceled my order and plan on never ordering at this place again.

and after waiting over an hour I got soggy stale french fries, tasteless rice and the smallest portion of beef ribs I have ever seen in my life. For the amount I had to pay it was the most disappointing meal I have ever had. I would not suggest this restaurant to anyone.
