Specialties
Pic-Nic Café Restaurant located at 233 Ferry Street in Newark, was established in 1975 as a Portuguese coffee shop where you could get a good espresso, some pastries & sandwiches. The most important was getting Portuguese newspapers flown daily from Portugal and picked from Kennedy Airport upon airplane arrival.
It was a twice-weekly trip to the Kennedy Airport for the latest printed news. The Portuguese community was consisting of old immigration and the very recent from Portugal, Mozambique and Angola. In 1982 Mr. Castelo opened the first in Newark open pit BBQ serving traditionally prepared chicken and ribs.
Pic-Nic was very popular with Portuguese community and later on with new immigrants from Brazil and other countries from Central and South America. Today it serves all the local population and people from surrounding towns and suburbs. We are very proud to offer grilled chicken, ribs, steaks, fish, cod fish (bacalhau) and traditional Portuguese dishes.
