NJIT – New Jersey Institute of Technology

I have only taken two classes at NJIT, both Biology classes. They were both very interactive. Small campus in the middle of Newark. I just wish that if they decided not to cancel classes during a snow storm that they would at least shovel the sidewalks on campus. The Starbucks at the student center does not take Starbucks cards and is cash only for purchases under a certain dollar amount. I also don’t think it offered the full Starbucks menu. Classrooms are updated and campus is pretty.

Awesome engineering school. This school is extremely affordable considering the nearby engineering schools. Campus life stinks but it’s improving. Njit is really expanding and becoming more active. Njit is directly across the street from Rutgers and next door to Essex community college. Great variety of food places including grease trucks. Campus offers plenty of parking. School is really harsh on math. Easy to get accepted and easy to get kicked out. Courses are no joke and very serious.

First off, if you’re going there for Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science, then disregard this review. These are 3 programs that are done properly here. Though developing, I’d also recommend the Engineering Technology field, and the programs they offer there.
The Mechanical Engineering Program was in danger of losing its accreditation, but has appealed the decision and have just wrapped up the review year. The program is terrible, with terrible scheduling, and 15 minutes per week of available office hours for every student in the program above freshman level. Not 15 minutes each, 15 total to be split between all Mechanical Engineering students.
It’s nice that the School of Architecture exists, if only to give you an in-​state option that doesn’t cost as much as Princeton.
The School of Management is nice in theory. It provides some VERY general coursework, with zero real world applications unless you’ve chosen to study Economics or Accounting. The classes do not reflect changes in the industry at all, and while you may learn of PPC, SEO, Social Media Marketing, and the like, no coursework will have you actually use these vital tools. The marketing classes are no exception. Professor Mehta, who I had for my Intro to Marketing class, is well learned, well versed, and an excellent instructor, but only has that one undergraduate class.
The irony in this, of course, is that NJIT does an excellent job in marketing itself (or in outsourcing their marketing) and does nothing to prepare the majority of Business students for any real world assignments outside of retail sales. I spent the first 6 months after I graduated learning skills my peers from other universities learned in school in order to meet the bare minimum requirements for even the simplest of marketing agencies.
Career Development Services is useless to those outside of the engineering field, and the job fairs are also predominately geared towards engineers and some computer science positions. The gym is a joke, and the parking situation is worse now than when I was in attendance.
I feel as though I’ve completely wasted my time and money here, and know for a fact that I’m not alone. Feel free to message me to ask about your specific program of interest and if NJIT really does have something to offer you.
This place is a perfect example of the problem that’s come out of industrializing higher education. Buyer beware.

I attended here for an year and gracefully transferred to one of the top ranking schools in the states. This school really gave me an other chance! And I am thankful for that. But the quality of the school has to be improved somehow. The school really needs to spend much more to maintain the territory SAFER, SAFER, SAFER (²⁴⁄₇ security guards are really need to patrol all the time –like how all the prestigious school do) and CLEANER.

Better than Stevens.

Education: 5 stars. Campus life: 2 stars. Overall: four stars since education is why you’re there.
A truism in life is that you get what you make out of experiences, so two folks with the same degree may have vastly different outcomes after graduating. Two weeks after graduating, I got a job in the field of my degree and less than three years later I had more than doubled that job’s salary. A college colleague with the same degree went to a car rental company as an entry level salesperson, essentially dismissing the intrinsic value of his degree.
NJIT is well known in the New York City area as a school with a high level engineering reputation. Lots of students come out with solid knowledge of engineering (be it computer science, IT, architecture, etc) and hiring people are aware of these skills. Teachers come from the real world and that pragmatic approach to teaching supplies the knowledge you will gain. There are no lofty idealistic professors living far away from reality; what you will find is men and women who began companies, worked in government agencies responsible for innovation, or academic leaders bringing new technology to the classroom. It is very easy for me to say my education at NJIT — comprised of the classes and teachers — put me in the right path for my career.
Of course, the other side to college is the campus life, which NJIT inherently fails due to it’s placement in New Jersey’s scariest city. Newark is not a city you can stroll around. In fact, the university area is essentially blocked off by police and monitored heavily to protect the students. Newark has a lot of poverty and while there is some sort of slow renaissance (former Mayor Sharpe’s words, not mine), it is not a friendly place. No enjoyable shopping area outside the tiny strip by the adjacent Rutger’s campus. Forget sitting in a park during the day.
By virtue of being so close to Manhattan, there is always something to do… in New York City! PATH train near by with a convenient and relatively safe Newark subway connector directly to the PATH. Own a car and life is even better.
It is worth saying that while you may have more fun smoking pot in Vermont or drinking beers in Boston, NJIT will provide a very good education at a discount rate compared to other colleges. You won’t get paid $ 100,000+ for any other reason besides your skills.

The pool is nice and the swim lessons are worth the $$

Obviously have to rate my alma mater! This university gets SUCH a bad rep, but I’m here to set the record straight. NJIT has UNPRECEDENTED student-​professor relationships. I felt so comfortable in all my classes that I was able to ask my professors anything without feeling an ounce of discomfort. I also had a very close relationship with the Dean of Students which at most universities as damn near impossible. If you want your kid to learn in a comfortable, homey atmosphere, send them here. You won’t be disappointed.
I’ll miss you Newark :(

Ahh! Let me sigh a HUGE breath of relief! NEVER again will I have to visit Newark, NJ for anything but pleasure (and yes, there IS pleasure in this city– all the Portuguese food?! Hello!!)
Grad school is over, baby!
My educational experience here was overall, pretty good, and I have to admit that I did learn a lot. The campus is pretty cool too– a lot has changed since I went to undergrad. Wired? A wired campus? WHAT?
The main drawback is the location and safety factors. I mean, if a school hires real Newark Police to patrol the grounds (vs. Security guards or NJIT «police») then it smells of seriousness to me.
Overall though, as far as a Tech School goes? Pretty cool. 3 stars because of the tuition they charge and the continual increases…
