Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart

i love this church. i love taking pictures of it and its just so beautiful inside and out.

I visited the cathedral in July of 2013 during my lunch break from work and it was time well spent. The architecture inside and out is amazing. It is a free experience. However, I opted to buy the pamphlet (A Short Tour of The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart) for $ 4. I recommend that you bring your camera.

Absolutely beautiful. I cannot believe something so amazing was so close to me. It definitely compares to the chapels in Manhattan such as St Peter or st Patrick. Check website for mass hours. Careful parking your car because surrounding area is not the best.

A beautiful work of architecture. It has tours and free organ music concerts during the winter. You would think you were in a cathedral in France! There is an excellent candle light Christmas concert every year. There is also a beautiful park across the way.

There is a music in everything in life. It’s in the blooming cherry trees, in single petal flowing to the water, in rays of sunshine as you walk through the park.
There are also whole symphonies that happen to raise your spirit and make your mind to wonder — Basilica Cathedral is that symphony in architectural form…
I never expected to find it in Newark of all places — but here is it, standing on the very edge of Branch Brook Park, with its sharp towers touching the sky, and the ornamental details of French Gothic Architecture singing to my heart.
As you stand at very entrance, the scale of it will shock you — look up, and see it towering over you, in all it grandiosity.
It is quiet during day time, not many people are here, so you are free to explore and see every nook and cranny. Every arch, every window are simply beautiful — the stained glass rosettes, the sculptures, the warm stone of the walls, the smooth wood of the benches…
I am not a religious person — to me, it’s a place of peace, solitude and reflection. A gem of architecture and view on history. And a reflection on yourself.
A beautiful retreat to anyone — and must see, for everyone.

wow! check out the view from the hill in the park across the street, especially nice when the cherry blossoms and other flowers are blooming. very architecturally impressive structure, looks like it belongs in Europe. currently undergoing some structural renovations.

One of Newark’s most prestigious monuments, this church is beautiful! I have never been to a service but I have visited inside. It is beautiful architecture! My best tip is to come at night. The lights make this already beautiful place even more mesmerizing

I was visiting from California and I agree with the previous review this is definitely worth coming to look at if you are in the area. Beautiful historic church, 365 feet in length based on the website. i attached photos but definitely stop by if you have the chance. Parish staff is very nice and helpful as well.

Pope John II visited here why can’t you? That was back in 1995 he had evening prayer. This uplifted the Cathedral in to what we know now as the Basilica. French-​Gothic in design, the fifth-​largest cathedral in North America well my next question is where is the other four? Maybe someone can find out for me.
I get it this isn’t Vatican City, Rome nope its Brick City, Newark. I see so many tourist and non tourist flocking to St Patrick’s Cathedral. What about the fact the Pope visited. Only person I know that came to St Patrick’s was Spider-​man (well the Tobey McGuire version that is.) the Cathedral sits at 40,000 square feet, much bigger than Saint Patrick’s.
The mammoth piece of design history was started in 1899s. It is a beautiful sight. In high school, my graduation was held here from Bishop Francis Essex Catholic. The marble floors made for an interesting slippery fall as I went to get my diploma. Even then I knew this place was special. My favorite on view here are the Stations of the Cross, 14 of them in mosaic. Usually one would see this carved out of stone. Super unique.
This makes Newark’s skyline shine. The Basilica has Mass daily and guided tour are offered every Sunday following the 12 noon mass. Annual Concerts are held there is something for everyone. Just because it’s Newark with a little bit of Path action mix in some bus or cab it up. You can have a very interesting Sunday! It is FREE of course.

Awesome Basilica, gorgeous architecture, and masses here are ornate and something to behold. There is a wonderful organ and the talent of the canters is impressive. If you get a chance to attend a concert here, I’m sure it would be amazing. Accessible by bus and there is a parking lot as well. Definitely worth a trip down to visit for anyone; Wiki says it is the 5^th largest Cathedral in North America.

My grandmother is visiting us from Poland and she’d rather stay home and sew than go out and have a look-​see at the U.S. of A. We finally figured out what gets her out of the house: churches & farms. I’m good with the farm part, I’m good with looking at breathtaking cathedrals, but I wasn’t sure how good I would be sitting through all these masses — three in one month so far and tomorrow will be #4!
No worries sitting through a mass at this gorgeous cathedral! The Gothic architecture, all the little details on the stations of the cross that line the walls, the infinite ceiling, the ethereal choir… constantly something to take in and be in awe of… and before you know it, it’s Amen and see ya later!
We happened upon a pretty impressive mass — the 25^th Anniversary Episcopal ordination of the Archbishop of Newark! They almost didn’t let us in since it was a reservations and ticket only event. But they did allow a few non-​priests and non-​nuns (heehee) and we sat through an even more amazing mass complete with full blown security for, I assume, the three Cardinals present. I still managed to sneak upstairs and peek out the little window on the 3^rd floor (take the stairs or the elevator, restrooms are also located here) and took in the scene as well as a photo.
If you’re religious like my grandmother or if you’re an agnostic like myself, you’ll still be blown away by the sheer beauty and size of this cathedral.

The most beautiful Cathedral I have ever been to. I prefer their choice of English– Irish Gothic over french Gothic design. The Christmas concert is always a treat. I love driving past on 280 at night when it is lit up, really a magnificent sight. The hood is a little ghetto, but you shouldn’t let that stop you from making a pilgrimage. Disagree with previous reviewer that it does not compare favorable with ND in montreal.

Stunning architecture! This is an old gothic style catherdral from the late 1800’s. It’s enormous and has many private areas to pray and reflect. It is visited not only by members of the congregation but by tourists as well.

My dad and I attend the Christmas Concert here, so that is what my review is based on. The choir does a wonderful job with this performance. they do many other concerts during the year as well which i haven’t been to. the Christmas concert had two dates this past year due to the large attendance and it still packed the house. Some are religious songs lesser known but theres also traditional songs so a variety of people will enjoy. A beautiful cathedral as well, although nothing compares so far to the Notre Dame in montreal.
