You’d have to be insane to buy your meat here. Go to Lopez meat market on the corner of Adams and Walnut street instead. The produce at seabras is not the best either and be sure to check expiration dates on items. I’ve come across many expired items on the shelves and some even have defaced dates. Unfortunately, with the exception of Pathmark, they rule the Ironbound so it’s hard to avoid shopping there for certain items. I buy my meat at Lopez(ironbound), fruits and veggies at trader Joes(near my office in Clifton) and everything else at Pathmark. I only use Seabras for general items on rare occasions. Bonus: Their property on Lafayette street and surrounding sidewalks are always filthy and full of garbage that generated from the store. I brought it up to management but it didn’t seem to make a difference. I just can’t believe that a business with strong ties to the local community can’t even sweep their sidewalks or clean their own garbage. Avoid this place if you can.

I have no car, so for me, this is the best supermarket within walking distance. Seabra’s Supermarket on Pacific ave is the smaller«brother» of the big one on Lafayette. They have a nice collection of foods, but this is not your regular American supermarket; if you’re looking for dairy products and Italian foods, you won’t find it here. Instead, Seabra offers a large variety of fruits and vegetables, meat(lots of fish), and different snacks imported from Brazil and Portugal — much like the local population. The prices, especially for produce, is pretty cheap. The service is warm and friendly, gives you the neighborhood kind of a feeling, not the corporate people who work in other big chains. They even let me take one of their carts with the groceries all the way home once, without holding on to my ID.

Small supermarket(there’s a larger one on Lafayette), so they’re really not to blame for my biggest criticism: the prices. Coming from LA, the grocery prices in this area were a shock, to say the least(I skipped breakfast for my first year, because milk and cereal were literally double). That said, they have an excellent bread section that they seem to replenish pretty often, as well as a fish and meat section(I’m just cooking for me, so haven’t used that). Everyone is friendly and there’s very much a community atmosphere here, which I like, even though my Portuguese is, well, inoperable.
