Z Chemists

This is a great place to get higher-​end pharmacy products (i.e. Bioderma, Oribe, Malin + Goetz) in the area. They also take passport pictures!

I like buying the French skin products here: Avene, Darphin, Bioderma, & Nuxe. The saleswoman is very nice and knowledgeable. She can be a bit pushy but I ended up liking the additional products she convinced me to get. The prices for imports are the same as everywhere else. Plus my skin looks so great that I end up saving money on makeup. Just a dab of concealer on my under eyes, mascara, and I’m out the door. Very French!

Meh, methinks not.
This place smells. It’s awkwardly spaced. Everything just LOOKS old. And did I mention it smells?
Odd hours (who’s free 10 – 7 in this city?) — the only saving grace is that they carry weird products if you’re looking for something off the beaten path. For instance, I came here to buy my Baby Foot.

Went to Z Chemists because I’m only 24 and have insanely deep wrinkles on my forehead because I make too many facial expressions apparently (what?). Anyway the only reason I went here was to get «Frownies» which aren’t sold in a lot of stores in NYC. I didn’t feel like waiting for them to ship either.
I figured I’d pick up a few things while I was there like hand cream, listerine, and lotion. When I left I had spent like $ 70 because I wasn’t paying attention.
It is SO overpriced. I could have gotten all that stuff for like $ 30 elsewhere. Not impressed. Go for what you need and nothing else.

Tell me again why to shop local with a small business versus a goliath like Duane Reade or Walgreen’s? The service people in the pharmacy are sour, the managers are demoralized, the pharmacists overworked and all this for the privilege of sky high prices on just about everything in the store. They even put GODIVA candy, past the expiration, «on sale». Big of them, huh? I’ve been going there for years and got to the door at 6:58p tonight after running the dash for a quarter mile only to find it locked. Today being the only day i can pick up my ‘script, it was important. I knocked on the glass. The manager comes sauntering over saying «it’s 7:05 WE ARE CLOSED!» I said it’s actually 7pm and showed him my phone with the satellite time reporting 7 on the dot. Had he not locked the door i would have been fine. Do you think he was going to budge on saying it was 7:05p and he could help me? NOT. ONE. BIT. The pharmacist was actually walking out the door with his back pack on and ultimately helped me get my prescription. So which is it? Is it 7pm the employees are out the door? Or the time the store closes? Guess we’ll never find out.

I only stopped in here because I couldn’t find what I was looking for at Duane Reade. I couldn’t see shopping here on the regular as everything is really really expensive.

I’m actually addicted to Z Chemists. Seriously.
My family has a place on 57^th and 6^th and ANYTIME I’m visiting there I can’t help but go down to this store and buy something. I don’t understand why because I’m not someone who wears hair accessories every day (in fact it’s pretty rare) yet I CANNOT STOP BUYING HERE. They have some of the most interesting and creative hair pieces I’ve ever seen. Beautiful satin clips from Renee Rivera, leather headbands from Jennifer Behr and gorgeous (though overpriced) mink headbands. Everytime I come in here they have different merchandise.
Yes, it’s expensive. Like $ 275 for a hair clip expensive. But, they have a ton of mark downs all the time– anywhere from 40% to 75% percent off and one time the lady at the counter just gave me a discount for the hell of it. I really recommend this place for unique hair pieces, jewelery and/​or general cold weather materials.
On the other side of the store, the actual pharmacy is STOCKED beyond stocked and has great stuff. Deborah Lippman nailpolish… Fekkai hair products… SPANX! It’s a great place, definitely don’t pass it up if you have time to browse and are a sucker for beautifully made, detailed hair pieces.

I have always patronized independent pharmacies rather than have to deal with the chain drugstores, and Z Chemists has been my pharmacy since they opened on W. 57^th St. Other than the occasional bottle of shampoo or tube of toothpaste, my only purchases have been prescriptions, and the service by the pharmacists and their assistants has been extraordinary. They’ve gone out of their way for me on many occasions, I’ve never had to wait in line to get a prescription filled, and everyone in the store has always been friendly and helpful. Best of all, they deliver (I don’t know what the delivery radius is, but I work 12 blocks south of the store, and get my order within an hour of placing it). It would have to be a dire emergency in the middle of the night for me to go to Duane Reade, CVS, etc.

I was there as the store opened… the sales person was late so I had to wiait for her to show up to work to my products. You would think someone of the 4 people in the store would have at least apologized for making me wait.

I love pharmacies like this one. They have the best selection of masquerade masks that I have seen. They also have other Halloween items. I love the candles and specialty cosmetics here. Fun store with unique items!

I ended up here because the Duane Reade around the corner was unable to fill one of my prescriptions (the second time that’s happened recently; it’s not like I’m treating some exotic disease). If you’re sick, you don’t really want to run all over town (well, more blocks than necessary from home/​work/​subway) to fill the darn prescription.
Anyway, they not only had what I needed, they were friendly! Helpful! Competent! Well-​stocked! And– thank you insurance!– it was the same price as Duane Reade.
Also, this place is a lot more fun to browse than the Duane Reade. Luckily, my order was filled promptly, otherwise I probably would have left with lots of expensive shampoo. Ah, Phytojoba, someday I will have you…

The wealthier half of NYC loves Z Chemists and now I see why. I think they recently rebranded from their original unfortunately named «Zitomers». My past experience was only over the phone, however I recently stopped into their 57^th Street location after exhausting all other drugstore chains. What Z Chemists lacks in bargains it makes up for in merchandise. Here you can buy a $ 2 bottle of hydrogen peroxide with a $ 200 pashmina. Z Chemists is the place to go when you’re having a beauty, gift giving ir travel need emergency. They have high end products a ton of variety and they’re open early.

Gargantuan pharmacy with designer brand name cosmetics and indeed well stocked with a mammoth selection of reputable brand names. I was recommended by a co-​worker who informed me of their gargantuan selection of Vera Bradley bags. (I’m a avid Vera Bradley fan). Z Chemist did not disappoint me with their selection of Vera Bradley as they even have a fixture from Vera Bradley.
Constant vigilance is noted everywhere as I was being checked on every minute by different employees for assistance. One staff saw me waiting and she rang me up elsewhere to prevent me from waiting on line. They open the door upon exiting! The service attention is noted as well as the warm and friendly atmosphere. They price their products higher than other retail pharmacies.
Move over New Yorks’s Duane Reade; CVS; Rite Aid; et al you can’t compete with Z Chemist’s customer service.

Having heard so much about Zitomer, I was very excited to visit Z Chemist. They have a wide variety of cosmetic as well as medical products and a number of things you’ll find at Duane Reade, CVS, Rite Aid, etc. A myriad of high end, hard to find cosmetic brands are carried. There’s also lots of sparkly trinkets in the way of jewelry and hair goods as well as glasses, frames & mirrors, baby & dog items.
I went to Z Chemist in search of a very specific cosmetic crème and upon entering the store, I was sooo excited by everything I saw, I HAD to look around – which didn’t last long. I was asked if I needed help and shared the name of the product I was in search of. I was escorted to the area it would’ve been in and shown lots of other products in its place. As they saw I wasn’t going to buy anything they offered, they handed me over to a cosmetic specialist who also couldn’t produce the product nor convince me to make a purchase.
I then exited the store.
It was quite clear as I wasn’t satisfied with what they had or would be purchasing what they offered, I was no longer welcome in the store. So with that said, no, I won’t be returning to Z Chemist unless I call them prior to see if they have something in stock before visiting. Did it ever occur to those who worked here that allowing a customer to browse may yield a purchase? If this is the ‘tude of Madison Avenue, you can keep it, thanks!
While the store is handicapped accessible, there’s a downstairs (which I never got to look at) which is accessed via stairs. Don’t know if there’s an elevator.

Z Chemists is absolutely the best pharmacy in NYC! Unlike the mass drugstores which dominate NYC, Z is the epitome of personalized service, professionalism and class. Their pharmacists are knowledgeable, helpful, polite and fast. They treat customers as individuals, not numbers. Plus, their selection of cosmetics, cards, shampoo, hair accessories and gifts is second to none. You name it, they’ve got it. Z is fabulous!

Z Chemists, an offshoot of Zitomer on Madison, is a well-​stocked pharmacy with tons of accessories, beauty supplies, and other goods. I first went in for their large selection of dog toys, collars, and other pet supplies, and I keep going back! They’re also known to have a huge selection of Vera Bradley bags (if that’s your thing) and a large holiday decorations department during the holiday season.
