Yllana’s 666 Comedy

Hilarious comedy that needs few words to explain. And indeed it doesn’t have a lot of words to it. This Spanish troupe illustrates that certain jokes can cross cultural and language barriers. They’re like the Three Stoogess, except that there’s four of them.

This show got an amazing review from the NY Times —

Raunchy, crude, nasty. Just the way I like ‘em.
Not really, but it was still a good show — reminded me of Benny Hill, the dirty ol’ miming comedy show back in the 80’s.

Not being a native, and not having grown up in the US, most of the times when I go to a comedy club I don’t get half of the jokes/​references. Since the actors of 666 never speak throughout the show, I got most of the jokes.
Come to think of it, it would be hard not to get the jokes, since the script could have been written by a 13 year old kid. Raunchy and crass jokes about body fluids (just about every body fluid is simulated and thrown over the audience[1]), penises, prison rape, anal sex, etc… I found that a bit boring.
Apart from the gross vulgarity, however, the members of the Spanish group Yllana are pretty good actors, mimes, and clowns. What I enjoyed the most were the dream sequences in slow motion and the scene with the two hanged men.
I am not sure if I would pay the full price to see the show ($ 25 + $ 8.60 in fees; thank you, Ticketbastards!), but since I scored the tickets for free on Unilocal,I can’t complain.

Wow. I had no expectations when I arrived to the show, and I spent over an hour laughing.
Was it crude – why yes! Was it ever more enjoyable since I had a drink before the show – certainly! Was I more impressed since the tickets were free – well, yah…
Still, it was definately different. With a name like 666, I was not expecting family entertainment. And I would not bring my folks, but it was «wrong» in such an enjoyable way!

We received two complimentary tickets to the 666 Comedy show last night. Ordinarily, that would be a good thing. Unfortunately for me, I failed to get the 70 minute ode to penises, prison sex, bestiality, urine, semen, and sexual assault. I suppose in that amount of time with no dialogue at all, there would have to be some reversion to the lowest common denominator of humor. I just didn’t understand why the entire performance was about that. I mean, how many dick jokes can you laugh at in a row? How much gross out humor can you endure until it just becomes gross? Mr. Bean and the Three Stooges are prime examples of artists gifted in creating scenarios that are amusing and understandable. They emote wondrously and their originality can be striking at times. You will find nothing like that in this show. The only thing worthwhile was the skilled technicians. The lighting, sound, and special effects were spot on in an otherwise dreadful show. The opinion is not mine alone as I noticed that several people left during the performance. I, sadly, was considering doing the same thing. I suspect this will be a short-​lived venture and rightfully so. Paying real money for this performance would be foolish indeed. Unless seeing a nearly naked man with an erect 3 foot penis climbing over your seat is an absolute must, I say avoid.

What a horrid raunchy mess. If I had paid for tickets, momma would have walked out. Thank goodness my parents were not in town and I (acting like a big shot) took them to this show. The penis scene? Really? Ejaculation upon the audience? Really… I am no prude but this was just straight up gross.
The look of sorrow and dismay on my boyfriend’s face said enough. AVOID!

Watching it was a boring and lame experience, and I felt my IQ dropping by the second. Worst of all: I had surprised my non-​theater-​goer date with tickets. It was going to be my attempt to convince him that theater can be a cool and interesting and unique experience in New York.
And sure enough, the next time I tried to weasel him into going to a play, he was suddenly very «busy.»
I blame Yllana for what could have been a summer full of plays for me and this boy. Now it’ll be a summer full of plays for me and me.
