W New York

Good Hotel in a prime location on the east side of Manhattan. I know people think the rooms are small, but for Manhattan even the Cozy room is still big enough to get by. The rooms were clean, and the cleaning staff did a good job every day cleaning up. The Mini bar prices were a bit outrageous ($ 10 for Mike and Ike, Really???) but not unexpected. The front desk handled our check in quickly. Toiletries were provided by Bliss (next door) and my Wife loved them. Minor issues included thin walls (you can hear other people, but I didn’t notice it too bad) and the HVAC vent sounded like you were in an airplane when it went off (not the engine noise, the airplane ventilation noise). Check out was via the TV and was quick.
Finally they should provide two bathrobes when two people check in, not just one.

Rude staff, dirty rooms, thin walls and uncomfortable beds. We are platinum starwood members and I have to say this is the worst w we have ever stayed at. Do not stay here.

DO NOT Believe the staff! Pay to Park because you will get towed and then have $ 300 fine!
Buyer Beware this hotel staff is shady and will Nickel and dime you for everything! The worst part is that they wont even let you bring your own bags to and from your room. They claim that you must use the service and the whole time bell boy will complain because he wants to ensure he gets a tip! Its a shame this place has such bad management because the facility and room is nice its the Staff and parking that’s problem.

We have a saying in Texas: All hat, no cattle and The W Hotel New York epitomizes that saying. Slick lobby, cool bar, front desk attendants who couldn’t give a shit if you lived or died (you know… super cool), key cards with clever sayings written on them. But hop on that tiny elevator to get to your room… and it hits you: you’re staying in a shithole. Yes, you expected your room to be nice and fancy and you know, sort of like the cool lobby and bar downstairs cause, you know, it’s kind of expensive. But instead you’re in dim, shitty box, with no amenities (except a Couples Kit with condemns-​how provocative!), thin walls, loud A/​C and no view. It’s literally the most depressing hotel room I’ve stayed in anywhere and I travel quite a bit.
In short, it doesn’t matter how much lipstick you put on this pig; it’s still a pig. And it’s the first and last time I ever stay here.
The room is pretty big though.

Like most hotels in the city, the rooms are tiny. But this was like super tiny! The hotel is in a GREAT location. 7 blocks up from Grand central. Very convenient! But I still prefer taking the hike up to Union Square and staying at the other W there. Much better.

While I do love other locations and I admittedly did not stay in this one, it was the service in the lounge that upset me. I sat down on the couches to get some food and a drink while doing work and it took so long for someone to come up to me that I had to go to the desk and request service.

Oh why oh why do I not read Unilocal before booking? I’m a huge Starwood fan and on trips try and stay at their properties. Not just that — I had points, which I blew ALL of (a year of point accumulation) on _​this_​??
So — below is the letter I sent the hospitality person who emailed to see how my stay was going:
Hello Alice,
I think I was expecting more. For the price, and the advertised «view» — we got a tiny room that looks at the building across the street. The room is ok, but really just a room. The décor is not great, though I’m sure someone is thrilled by the huge mirror over the bed and the hot pink and yellow clashing colors.
We didn’t ask because we are self sufficient, but when we checked in, no one even offered to bring our bags up and no one was around that looked like a bellhop to ask. It took us way too long to find the elevator and we got on the wrong one because no one told us where the guest room elevators were or that there was a bank of them behind the first bank that went to higher floors. Yes, when we looked we saw the posting above the elevator — but after 10 hours on a plane who is looking?
Not that this is fixable, but people staying in this room as a couple better be really close because there is a frosted glass wall that separates the bathroom. So if you’re using it, anyone in the room can see exactly what you’re doing. If a friend was visiting — everyone would need to step out into the hall…
And while I know there is construction going on, I’m not a fan of the lobby at all. I hope it has a major overhaul. It’s entirely too dark, the light display behind the bar is assaultive, and the music is so loud you feel like you’re in a nightclub. Not bad if you want to be in a nightclub — but if you’re exhausted from travel it was off putting. Too bad you need to walk through the area to the elevators.
Positive — the nightlight in the bathroom is cool and the soaps are fun. Also, they at least have one free water in the room, though the nickel and dime snacks make you wonder if you’re staying in a wallgreens (which, btw, is where we went to buy the same snacks at a fraction of the cost).
Thanks for reaching out. I don’t think there is anything to be done to make the stay different. I just had much different expectations, and you know what they say about expectations…
Do not stay at this property Unilocal family. For the price, find something else. We went for dinner at the Mandarin in Columbus square (about 10 blocks or so walk) and it was a gorgeous property with a pretty view and what I hear is an award winning spa? (at least wins awards with my friend when he sends his wife there).

The room was tiny, I had no view except of the empty lot next door and the staff guarding the elevator at 2:00a.m. were really rude and apprehensive. Location in Midtown was a great benefit along with the proximity to the subway and great brunch places.
I will check out other hotels in the area. It was not worth the price for a tiny room with unpleasant staff.

Nice hotel in a nice location! Very friendly staff! Excellent gym! I look forward to coming here every weekend for my weekend relaxation. Very central location in Manhattan.

I don’t know why all these people have written such harsh reviews about this hotel. I stayed here for 3 nights back in June and thought it was great.
Firstly the location, it was perfect. Walking distance to many attractions and just a block away from the subway station. Next the room, I have stayed in rooms in New York before and found them to be beyond small, hardly room to get around in but even with getting the smallest standard room, I still felt like it was pretty spacious. The bathroom was a decent size and the bed was very comfy. The hotel was very helpful and quick with bringing up additional toiletries and even when I needed bandaids. The concierge recommended a lunch spot near by which was delicious.
I definitely recommended you stay here if you want a decent priced, great located, luxurious hotel.

Solid Midtown hotel with the standard amenities. The location is very convenient and right near the 6 and a 10 min walk to the GM building. The rooms themselves are very small but the bed is comfortable, and the toiletries are all by Bliss. The Bliss spa is also on the 4^th floor, which is a nice plus.

Poor service. Old facilities. Old beat up rooms with gross tile bathrooms. Did I mention poor service? There’s a reason this W is cheaper than the others in NYC and that’s because it’s older and the hotel is severely mismanaged. STAY SOMEWHERE ELSE WHERE YOU WONT CHECK IN, get to your room, and then feel ripped off once you see what you get. The management at this hotel is abysmal.

I’ve been staying at the W New York each week for the past 6 weeks, so I’ve pretty much seen it all.
The service is very good, but only when you get to know the staff and prove that you tip. Being nice doesn’t seem like it’s their default option. I get that people in the service industry are working for tips, but in my mind, you need to earn it before you receive it, not their other way around. There was an inconsistency in housekeeping (from room to room, and also day to day) that seemed to come from this.
The rooms are teeny tiny, even by New York standards. I’ve used all my SPG suite upgrades, just to feel like the walls weren’t closing in on me. The bathrooms make really good use of space, but that space is small (my bathroom last week was 8′ x 3.5′).
The beds are wonderfully comfortable. They make for a wonderful night’s sleep. The pillows are a bit hit and miss — I think it just depends on the room. Some weeks they’ve been really nice and plump, other weeks it seems like a couple of teenage girls had a pillow fight with them resulting in exploding feathers.
The air conditioning works (always a plus), but it is really loud. One of the bonuses of having the suites is that I’ve been able to keep the air conditioning on in the lounge room and switch it off in the bedroom so I could sleep soundly.
I’m a big proponent of privacy curtains. The kind of sheer ones that still let sunlight in, but don’t let you see into the room. The W only has blackout curtains, and being New York, you’ve got the option of no natural light, or having a clear view into one of the rooms across the courtyard, or in the Marriott or Waldorf across the street (depending on which way your room faces). None of these are a wonderful option.
The room service food is pretty good, and it’s always really prompt.
Overall, I’ve enjoyed my time at the W. I’d be happy to stay there again.

Starwood should be embarrassed to have this hotel in their collection. Shut. It. Down.
I lived in New York for the past five years and always heard horror stories about this hotel — grungy, wild guests; impossibly small bathrooms; bad odors; etc. After moving away and then coming back for work, I found myself here for the first time and could finally be the judge of this place for myself. And it was AWFUL.
You can tell from the lobby that this is one of the more outdated W Hotels in New York and perhaps the country. It doesn’t have the signature «cool» décor and seems a bit 90’s in its styling. The lobby is also always full of obnoxious drunkards from the attached Whiskey Blue bar/“restaurant.”
My room was absolutely disgusting. They told me at check in that they had «upgraded» me to a suite, but I honestly wish I had been in the more «standard» room I reserved.
The suites are overly large but EXTREMELY spartan. I felt like I was in a sad dorm room or hostel — I mean, it really just makes you feel depressed. Furthermore, while both the bedroom and the sitting room were spacious, the bathroom was ridiculously tiny. There is no way two adults could share this bathroom. It makes no sense to me that they didn’t allocate the space amongst the three rooms more effectively. There is one pedestal sink, a tiny strip of ledge (not actual counter space) to put your belongings on, and a terrible shower where the water shoots straight down from the ceiling (but, of course, they don’t give you a shower cap) and there is no door on it to keep the floor dry.
My room smelled HORRIBLE. They claim to be nonsmoking, but the air was thick with stale cigarette smoke. Everything looked dingy. The wallpaper was peeling off in the bathroom. The shower floor felt incredibly gritty, and I began to wonder how much bacteria it soaks up and holds on to… There were barely any available outlets in the room, and I had to unplug the clock and the phone just to charge my devices in relatively close proximity to the bed.
When I checked in, I noticed that SEVERAL items were missing from the mini bar… beer, soda, juice, liquor, snacks. Basically a little bit of everything was gone. I alerted the front desk to avoid being charged… but they still had EIGHT mini bar charges on my bill when I checked out. They did remove them but, wow, how irresponsible. I wonder if this is a scam they run — just keep failing to fill up the mini bar and then charge every guest who comes in for the missing items and hope they don’t notice… Oh, and speaking of the mini fridge — it was literally falling apart. Barely keeping anything cold, and there were wires sticking out of the front.
Room service was a joke. I bought a bottle of San Pellegrino, and they left it with no bottle opener. Also, a friend sent me cookies and milk as a check-​in surprise, and instead of waiting to deliver it until after I arrived, they had just left it out in my room for god knows how many hours (my check-​in time was 3pm but I didn’t arrive until 1am, technically the next day). The milk was close to room temperature when I arrived…
I also woke up on my last morning with several bug bites on my shoulder /​back. I am still waiting to hear the results of an inspection for bed bugs and will update this review once I hear back. [UPDATE: No bed bugs were found, so who knows what was biting me…]

Stayed here for conference based on being SPG brand loyal and never had a bad experience with a W… until now. I am not sure why this hotel just does not embody what makes a great W and baffles me. I upgraded to the Mega room based on some misleading pics online only to find out that the room was in fact bigger, but missing any kind of ‘cool’ factor I was expecting. Instead, you get a room that was probably trendy 10 years ago and showing age in esthetics and functionality. Case in point… should your guess really have to pull the work desk away from the wall to find power source for my laptop? There are no accessible power ports anywhere. Need to iron a shirt? You will need to plug in inside the bathroom or use same power outlet that is behind desk now being used by said laptop. There are no other outlets on the walls in my room. Also, something is going on with the outdated attempt to make the bed look trendy with some kind of backlit mural that when lit up, looks like a bad light box you see at a bus stop. Not kidding here folks.
I’ll let my pics tell the rest of this review for an aging W that needs an overhaul for the price you pay. Plenty of other choices around the area for same price and really well done aesthetics and functionality.

Bue hotel. Ubicacion perfecta, no estas en el caos total de ny pero si muy central. Puedes caminar a la mayoria de los. mejores lugares de manhatan. Me. encantó. el unico pero fue que la. cama era algo pequeña.

We’ve stayed here twice. Rooms are small, no fridge, but they are really all you need for a night in NYC.
Comfy bed, clean and quiet room.
Bathroom small, two people can’t get ready at once and has a door that closes oddly.
The Lobby bar is great for drinks and a cheese plate.
There is a rooftop bar at the Kimberly right near it and The Smith we chose for brunch near it as well.
My only complaint is no free Wifi and we couldn’t even valet here because the nearby lot was $ 25 cheaper and couldn’t justify $ 65 valet.

On the good side. Pretty seamless service for check in and checkout. My SPG card gave me a choice of some extra points, a free drink at the bar, for free WiFi — yes, I’ll take the WiFi. Bathroom counter space is reasonable but oddly laid out.
On the downside — the room is small. I have been in much smaller square foot rooms before but this one seemed to have gone out of it way to make you feel cramped. To get to the window shade you need to walk around the bed — but that is nearly impossible to do. The shower is oddly small as well.
A minor point — but when getting to my room the first key I tried did not work. A few tries produced no results and not looking forward going down to the desk to get another one (it was just me looking to crash one night for an early start the next day) I tried the other one and — poof, I was in and not much longer than that, asleep…

I wish there was a 2.5 star rating.
It’s not that my experience was bad, just not up to par or expectations.
The room was pretty small and very dark. The lobby was also very dark and just seemed so gloomy to me. Also, despite being a platinum member, I was placed on a low floor where the noise from the street made it sound as though I were on a ground floor with my window open. You could hear just about everything.
A similar complaint about the lobby, loud music going. Just not what you’d hope for when traveling for business.
The bill was also more than expected, part of that is being hit with taxes totaling over 16%. Part of that was a false charge for some «munchy» from what I can only assume is the snack bar they’ve got in there.
I might still stay there because the location is phenomenal and I’m a loyal Starwood guy. The bed is comfy and the bathroom was nice as well.
But I’ve had better experiences at W hotels before.

Pretty solid W. I’ve never been in one of these before but had to stay here for three nights while I was in NYC for work. Most of my work buddies say that this place is a bit too small, but I thought it was actually spacious enough relative to other hotels that I’ve stayed in for personal trips to NYC. Admittedly it’s not super big, but I think it’s big enough especially because you’re really not spending that much time in it except to sleep, and the bed is bigger than me so that’s big enough for me. The bathroom is definitely on the smaller side though, but that’s not so bad. The shower door was kind of weird because it was only a half screen so it basically only blocked water getting onto the toilet but then got onto the rest of the floor.
They have a nice set of bath bubbles/​soaps, etc that was more extensive than I’ve seen from other hotels. Sheets were really clean. Did smell a little old though but honestly after a long day I was just happy to fall asleep. Lots of ample, convenient outlets all over the place. No free wifi though, but complimentary bottle of water that came every day. Really nice desk to get some work on.
The lobby is super popping and hip. It literally looks like a club where everyone hangs out after work. They also have coffee at the elevators right before you get in during the day but it’s not there at night ??? which sucked because why would I be in the hotel during the day. Room service was pretty good.
The location is awesome. You’re right near 4÷5÷6 at 51^st and Lex which was super convenient and honestly the only line I needed to take since my office was near the place. But I know that Grand Central is very nearby as well, so definitely easy transit to get out.
tldr; All in all, had a solid stay and would recommend to someone! Expensive though– $ 310/​night

To be clear… I am writing about the bar experience on the first floor (but not Whiskey Blue) with the fireplace — NOT the actual hotel/​rooms.
I swung by this bar with my friend since we had some time to kill before getting massages at Bliss (the spa located in this W hotel) and I wanted a glass of wine. We sat near the large fireplace in the lobby area of the hotel and were promptly greeted by a server. She brought us each our glasses of wine (hefty pours — something I was actually shocked at considering where we were — midtown, trendy hotel, etc) and a different server brought out some bar snacks. They were home made potato chips served in what looked like a mini-​fryer dish — very cute.
Overall, it was a perfect experience — low lighting, quiet (due to it being a Sunday evening) with small groups spaced throughout the lounge area. For $ 14 per glass (and as I said, it was a good pour) I would happily make that a routine stop if I were going to Bliss for other services.
