Tompkins Square Bagels

I had The Weezer which was delicious. Their bagel sandwich with cream cheese and regular cheese made it extra gooey, which I loved.
They lose a star because there delivery takes over an hr and always comes cold. When I ate there and saw all the delivery bags lined up against the wall for over 30+ min, I understood why.

Ehh.
Maybe this place is so overhyped, one expects something really special. Actually, no. When one spends almost $ 30 on bagels/​drinks for two, one expects something really special and Tompkins Square Bagels did not deliver.
The line gets long, especially on weekend mornings, but moves fairly quickly, and they come down the line to take your orders beforehand. But figuring out what to order is a bit of an ordeal in and of itself. The chalkboard menus are on the wall and scattered, so I didn’t quite know what my options were and felt like I made a hasty decision since the person taking the orders doesn’t have a menu either.
I went with the Dylan on an everything bagel, pesto eggs, caramelized onions (instead of the roasted peppers) and mozzarella. Hubby chose the Leah on an everything, egg whites, caramelized onions and lox. Overall we weren’t quite impressed with the quality and taste of the bagel itself, though they must have been fresh. My sandwich was pretty good, although how much credit should they get when one can hardly go wrong with a combo of egg and cheese? Hubby’s sandwich was wayyy too salty, nothing about it accommodated the taste of the lox, and we ended up throwing half of it out.
The sad thing is that as we were eating, I heard people ordering French toast bagels – what? Where?! I couldn’t see it anywhere on the menu and was bummed because I undoubtedly would have ordered that and probably would have been happier. Being a noob at this joint does not work in ones favor!
Oh and I had a latte and totally agree with many of the previous reviews: not good, not good at all, and tasted burnt on top of that. Ended up throwing half of that away too.
Felt a little gypped by this experience; waited in line, didn’t love the sandwiches, hated the latte, and paid a whole lot more than I should have. I have no motivation to return, especially with at least two other awesome hand rolled bagel spots within short walking distance.

As a resident of the EV/​ABC area, Tompkins has become a way of life. BUT, as a Long Islander at heart, it is not the best bagel ive ever had in my mouth. I’m a slave to the bacon egg and cheese, which is NEVER a fail.
Theyve recently started putting soemthing in their eggs that I hate, and they often get kinda skimpy on the cheese, but hungover or just hungry, you cant go wrong.
They have a incredible assortments of bagels– yes that means french toast, blueberry, chocolate chip and YES even gluten free bagels. Endless kinda of cream cheese and you get to watch the bagels being made while you’re on line.
The line may look deceiving when it is usually out the door, but it goes incredibly quick. Just make sure you check your bag before you leave, they mess up sometimes (almost every time)

Update: last few times I have gone they messed up my order each time. Whether it be not giving me pesto eggs, switching American for cheddar (incorrect more than once), or serving my raw, cold bacon they have failed to get it right more than once. It so close and they have so many option, but the consistently screw up more than they get it right. Not worth the money anymore.

Been to Tompkins many times and I am never disappointed. There is always a line on weekend mornings/​afternoons but it moves quickly and they take your order while you wait. French toast bagels are amazing, pesto eggs are great, variety of sweet cream cheeses are always good and you can’t go wrong with one of their signature bagels. And you can get mac and cheese on a bagel — off menu! Recently I ordered, got home, and realized they gave me the wrong bagel. Called right away and they took my order again, ask if I would like anything else free of charge and were extremely nice and apologetic about the whole thing. Great weekend bagel place and they are open til 7 pm if you are nearby for lunch or a late afternoon snack!

The bagels are good and fresh, prices are ok (sandwiches can get expensive), line moves pretty quickly. I wouldn’t get the weezer again, everything falls apart/​slides due to the cream cheese, the chorizo isn’t that flavorful/​spicy, and I forgot there was bacon in it.
overall I liked the bagels (ate way too many of them). But they get 3 stars — I came for both gluten free and regular bagels, they threw 15 bagels in one bag, and I couldn’t tell them apart.

We came at like 1pm on Sunday and there was still a line, but luckily the line moves very fast!
There is a girl who comes down the line and takes your order, ask her to tell you the menu because odds are you can’t see the menu and you don’t have it memorized… but she does so she’ll just say it to you.
They have all the typical bagels, but they also have a lot of these crazy flavors like french toast and birthday cake cream cheese.
They DONT have flat bagels, but ask for it «scooped»! Less carbs.
We tried a variety. The pumpernickel was really good, they were out of the «almond» cream cheese which I really wanted to try… they were also out of the french toast bagel… but we did try the birthday cake cream cheese and it was so sweet and sugary I just could never eat it. they really slather on the cream cheese and that was like eating big thick frosting.
Overall, the bagels themselves when just ordering normal stuff was good, not the BEST, but definitely a good option. Also cash only **EYE ROLL**

Best bagels in East Village! I live in the area and wanted to grab bagels with friends from out of town. We didn’t want to venture to another neighborhood, so we chose Tompkins. Be prepared to bring CASH!
I love that you can see the bagels being made fresh. It’s nice to know that no matter what time you go in, you aren’t getting something stale made hours ago.
We came around 11:30 on a Sunday and waited around 30 minutes. While you’re in line, they write down your order to speed up the process, so make sure you read the menu board when you walk in.
I like that they have a variety flavors of tofu cream cheese, which is great for vegans! I ordered the everything bagel with tofu scallion cream cheese. It tastes just like normal cream cheese too, which is amazing!

The most BLESSED thing to exist in East Village is this bagel place. Tompkins Square is everything you could imagine when you think of the perfect New York bagel. It’s made fresh throughout the day to guarantee the best quality. Although I’m a dedicated SEC gal, they offer a huge variety of cream cheeses, including the famous birthday cake cc, and vegan cream cheese (how that’s possible is beyond me, but it’s there).
I will say the BIGGEST bummer though is that if you’re trying to come here on the weekend between 10:30 am-​noon, you can definitely expect to wait in a line/​wait to get your food for 45 min-​1 hour. Although the wait blows, I promise you will be more than satisfied nomming afterwards.
Remember, it’s cash only so bring those dolla dolla bills

So this is what a REAAAAAL handmade and handrolled bagel tastes like.
FOOD QUALITY:
I’ve never had a bagel that was soft and fluffy inside like fresh bread inside the interior that, with a small crisp outside, also tore easily with a good amount of elasticity. They give a LOT of cream cheese in the center, but after removing the excess of it and adding in smoked salmon and you get a really nice sweet, sour, salty, and smokey meltdown with a nice refreshing touch from the green onions — all in one bite. The bagel, with all the components together, kind of felt like I was eating a miniature, freshly baked pizza that gives you that «yuuuuuuummmmmmmm» satisfaction.
ENVIRONMENT:
Cramped. you’ll be lucky to find a seat. So eat to go.
Definitely recommend if you’re looking for a bagel. And I’ll be back.

My boyfriend and I ventured all the way from Harlem to finally try these bagels.
Holy cow! They do not disappoint. Was waiting in line for 15 minutes fun? No. Was it totally worth it after taking the first bite? Absolutely!
Unlike many bagel places, the lox smear has a generous portion of actual lox. When you get your bagel and pick it up at the register, you will receive a warm and DELICIOUS bagel. I wish we lived closer to TSB, because we would otherwise be regulars!

Yum! Freshly made bagels, rolled, boiled, and baked right in front of you. You don’t even need to toast it, since they are made fresh and served hot. You’ll have to wait in a long line to get to the bagel, but it is well worth it. They have a selection of about 15 different home-​made cream cheeses (and even tofu options!). If you’re craving sweet or savory, you’ll be sure to find the perfect breakfast here with options like spinach & artichoke cream cheese, chocolate chip cream cheese, and even birthday cake!

I came here with the mission of trying the french toast bagel with birthday cake cream cheese. Unfortunately they were out of the birthday cake so I asked the guy who worked there to just replace it with whatever he saw fit. He chose the strawberry cream cheese and my oh my, I have not stopped raving about the strawberry cream cheese since! There was an ABUNDANCE OF REAL DELICIOUS STRAWBERRIES within the cream cheese and it tasted like dessert. If anything, I think that was the star of my breakfast. To be honest, I don’t see the hype with the french toast bagel, but it was definitely worth the try.
Of note, Tompkins recommends to NOT toast their bagels as they are made freshly every hour and toasting would not do the bagel justice. If you ask me, it would have been nice to have that toasty crispy crunch that you can only achieve with the toaster oven…

Whoever said social media does not work has absolutely no purpose on this earth. Because I’m new to New York I follow every single food blogger possible. And what lead me to Tompkins Square bagels is a plethora of Instagram posts of what seemed to me a dream a French toast bagel with birthday cake confetti cream cheese. After seeing this picture on one too many food bloggers sites I thought I had to try this for myself.
And so I rolled out of bed on a very late afternoon on Sunday craving my first experience at a New York city bagel.
We ordered the French toast bagel with birthday cake confetti cream cheese as well as the ham egg and cheese sandwich bagel and topped it off with a side of pancakes, lattes & some scrambled eggs. The place does not disappoint!
The manager was super friendly let us try all the different flavors of cream cheese made suggestions and they were extremely friendly. I will definitely be going back there!

Tompkins Square Bagels are the BEST bagels I have ever had in my entire life. They hand roll them, and boil them in the traditional old world style. My recco: Get any bagel of your choice and cream cheese. This really let’s the bagel be the star. I ordered the garlic bagel and the bacon and chive cream cheese and out of everything we had in NY (45 places) this was in my top 3.
However — we loved it so much we decided to come back the next day and get some sandwiches. I had a standard bacon egg, and cheese and it was just okay. I think because we came on a Sunday the first time everything was super fresh, hot and steamy.
If it were just for the bagels and cream cheese 5 stars, the sammies are good, but not what you come here for. Also if you have a sweet tooth, they also have creative cream cheese like: birthday cake, and cookie dough — worth checking out and one of my fav spots in the East Village!

Absoluter Geheimtipp für Touristen! Sehr leckere Bagels, wobei die «Special Sandwiches» besonders empfehlenswert sind.

When my friend mentioned this place served birthday cake cream cheese I knew I needed to check it out!
We came on a Saturday after taking my pup to the Halloween dog parade and the line was out the door. Apparently everyone and their mother/​dog had the same idea.
Well, it was worth the wait. The cream cheese on my toasted plain bagel was deliciously sweet and creamy. But it didn’t resemble icing as much as I was expecting. It was definitely still cream cheese.
I can’t wait to go back and try their other spreads (they’ve got chocolate chip, pumpkin, Nutella, peanut butter, and so many more!)

Pretty darn good. 3.5 rounded up.
When it comes to bagels in the East Village, TSB reigns supreme. I’ve had better outside of the east village (think h&h) but inside of this ‘hood, Tompkins Square kills it.
They will let you taste test any flavor of cream cheese you want so take advantage of it. I hate birthday cake flavored food but their BD cake cream cheese stole my heart!
Bagels are fresh and good but the only complaint is that I feel like the bottom half is too hard and tough. When I bite into it, instead of my teeth sinking in, it squishes all the cream cheese out of the sides. Boooo.
Again, I’ve had them a better but from other places I’ve had nearby, this is a winner for sure.
Bagel, egg, cheese, and chicken sausage. Delicious. Man. So good. If you want to indulge in lots of grease (think: hangover cure), this will hit the spot.
Birthday cake cream cheese is sweet. I had it on a plain bagel and was a fan but it might have been better on a salt bagel to kick the flavor a bit.
My usual of scallion cream cheese, plain bagel, and tomato slices was a solid choice, as well.
Still want to remention the fact that when you bite down it ALL comes out of the sides. Seriously. It’s a bit miserable… if it didn’t taste so darn good, I would be more upset. ;)

The line at this place on a Sunday morning leads one to ponder if there’s no other bagel shop in the city, but it’s clear Tompkins Square Bagels is doing something right.
Thankfully, they got the line situation figured out. Staff takes orders throughout and by the time you get up to the register to pay, your bagel is hopefully done or close to being done. While you wait in line, you can peer through the glass at the bagel makers hard at work, like a culinary zoo!
A bacon, egg and cheese on an everything bagel is something I must get every trip to the city. It wasn’t bad but not the best I’ve ever had. I maybe would’ve considered ordering something else but all the chaos didn’t really allow time to peruse a menu.
It’s cash only and they have an ATM for those that forget.
I’m by no means a bagel expert but it definitely hits the spot and it’s cool to see them prepare the bagels before your eyes. I’d stick to this place on the weekdays when it’s not so crazy. When it’s more of a task to get your bagel than an enjoyable Sunday morning experience, it doesn’t seem worth it.

I am not sure if it is a good thing or a bad thing that I live so close to Tompkins Square Bagels.
There are two things that I really enjoy about TSB. The location/​vibe and the variety. It’s a cool place to hang out for a bit and is a block away fro Tompkins Square Park. You can probably roll in everyday for the rest of the year to try something new and still not run out of options. I will be back to try everything in due time.
But there one thing that I LOVE about this place: that pastrami lox. In my opinion, it is far superior to ordinary lox. It’s lox smoked like pastrami. What is not to love?! I feel like the essence of New York is wrapped up pastrami lox on an everything bagel.
The service is so friendly and fast. I was in and out with my bagel in five minutes. If you’re below 34^th in Manhattan, this is your bagel go-​to, hands down.

So what do you get when you take a freshly made french toast bagel, toasted lightly and add a generous schmear of birthday cake cream cheese?
You get one of the best darn bagels I’ve ever had.
No, really, I mean it. Huge, deliciously chewy cinnamony bagel with fat sugar crystals baked to the top and cream cheese that tastes like a funfetti cake — sprinkles and all. I was worried that the entire meal might be too sweet — but neither the bagel or cream cheese was too sugary. I can’t think of a better combination.*
I need to visit the East Village more often…

*This particular combination was a total of $ 5.25. Bagel was $ 2.25 alone (less fancy bagels are $ 1.25 I think) plus a few dollars for the cream cheese.

This bagel shop is purely average and could make many adjustments to make it better. It’s unfortunate that there are problems that could be easily fixed because I heard this used to be a great place.
1) Saturday and Sunday the lines are extremely long and the service is very slow about 25minute waits
2) Typically the person taking the orders is rude doesn’t explain to you what is offered if you are new to the shop. They should do something like Chopt where they haven menus on the line so you can see what you want instead of having to squint at the sign.
3) in regards to cost I compared it with competitors there are many bagel shops that are cheaper but what the owner compares himself to they are in line and sometimes more expensive
4) The coffee here is just average as well I think this could be a quick easy fix to change brands

Alors les bagels sont bons, j’ai testé le plain, le french toast, et le sésame, même si personnellement si je les préfère un peu moins compacts. Par contre ils se sont trompés et au lieu du Lox cream cheese j’ai eu du scallion. Donc un peu déçue surtout que j’étais déjà partie quand je m’en suis rendue compte.
Il y avait la queue et l’organisation n’était pas hyper claire, pas possible de lire le menu sur les ardoises pendant l’attente, et je n’ai pas trouvé de menu papier… Pas pratique du tout. En plus j’ai attendu autant que les gens qui prenaient des sandwich alors que je demandais que des bagels et un pot de cream cheese, ce qui n’étais pas le cas à ess-​a-​bagel.
Né prennent que le cash.

Plus we had a live drama of a employer fighting with one of the owner. The best combo for stop the fun.

Wer das amerikanische Frühstücksgeschehen einmal von Nahem betrachten möchte, ist hier genau richtig.
Bagels und Sandwichs in den unterschiedlichen Varianten — hier wird sogar selbst gebacken… Zu den verschiedenen Bagels (über Sesam bis French Toast Bagel) kann man sich neben Frischkäseaufstrich auch Eier und Speck auf seinen Bagel packen lassen. Da jubeln nicht nur die Cholesterinwerte, sondern auch der Gaumen. Im Übrigen lässt sich hier auch ein ganz passabler Kaffee trinken.
Am Wochenende kann es allerdings zu langen Schlangen kommen, bringt also etwas Zeit mit. Es lohnt sich.

Absoluter Tipp! Hier isst der echte New Yorker riesige, vor Ort frisch gebackene Bagels, die mit selbst hergestellten, leckeren Aufstrichen in mega-​vielen Varianten belegt werden können. Und was für den New Yorker gut ist, ist auch für jeden «Kurzzeit-​New-​Yorker» gut ;-)
Mein Favorite: Multi-​grain Bagel mit sundried tomato crème oder spicy pepper cream (nicht wirklich scharf) und leckerer geräucherter Hänchenbrust.
Auch gut: Zweiten, trockenen Bagel bestellen und reichhaltigen Belag auf zwei Bagel aufteilen ;-)
