Among private alternative high schools in NYC, The Smith School is exceptional. Total enrollment is less than 50 and class size averages 4 to 5 students. We specialize in unleashing each student’s potential by providing a learning environment that is safe, focused, structured. We have over a decade’s worth of experience bringing academic success to students who have found that school is too often a place of frustration, anxiety, and under-​achievement. Located near Central Park in NYC, The Smith School has many resources and programs. Music and art are emphasized, as well as, a host of other in-​school and after-​school programs and activities. While The Smith School is a college preparatory high school, with 95% of our students continuing onto higher education, our concentration is fostering the rich individuality of our students in a atmosphere of tolerance, creativity, and mutual respect.

Established in 1990.

Founded in 1990 by our Director, Karen Smith, The Smith School offers a flexible program of academic study in a small, informal day-​school setting. We hope all parents who feel that their children’s education is not progressing as it should will consider the option of alternative education in general, and The Smith School in particular.
