The Paul, an Ascend Hotel Collection Member

My wife and I stayed here for 1 night. Staff was very very friendly so I am shocked to see other reviews stating otherwise. The room was very clean and comfortable. Small, but thats NYC for you. Bathroom was really nice with a nice rainfall shower. Restaurant and Bar was ok for a quick bite before heading out. There is construction outside that created noise but thats not anything the hotel can control. They have earplugs provided in room to help with that. Its not a luxury hotel, but for the price we would definitely return.

Stayed here for one night. The staff was friendly and the room was nice. I would definitely stay again. Had a drink and some snacks at the hotel restaurant. It was ok.

Not so nice. The food was barely edible, customer service very lacking, duck tape on the shower door, shower drain that didn’t drain, and they double charged my room. When I called to try to fix the extra charge, I was treated very badly, with complete rudeness.
It’s too bad because I like their concept, modern décor, and location. Unfortunately, I would not stay here again.

My boyfriend and I had a great three-​night stay here. The staff was unusually friendly compared to most other hotels I’ve stayed at, the hotel was in a perfect central location to all the places we wanted to go, the room was very clean and comfortable, and the view from the 19^th floor where our room was was pretty spectacular. We had the salmon dinner one night and that was great as well. Breakfast is continental and meh. The room was small but the bed was extremely comfortable and the shower was the kind you could stay in for hours. There is construction right across the street, and during the week the noise seemed to start around 7am, but on the weekends it’s more reasonable, like around 9-​ish. As long as your focused more on location and comfort than ritziness, this place is perfect.

As of today 4÷28÷16 I have been charged for the reservation after I was told in writing by email that I would not be charged for the room. I have sent an email to Aman at The Paul who confirmed there would be no charges incurred and I have not heard back from him.

I would strongly recommend not staying here. Hotel staff is disengaged and unhelpful. I read the reviews after booking a room for a week unfortunately.
Every morning at 7am there are jackhammers going at it right outside your window. I’ve asked for a new room on the other side of the building since day one. And they keep telling me they’ll call me. I finally went down and ask them for one again and they told me there’s no rooms available.
I’m back in my room now and looked up rooms online and they have every type of room available.
I would never stay here again and if you’re traveling here, I’d recommend somewhere else.
Terrible experience.
Additionally, there’s always footprints in the bathroom after cleaning and cash and metro card that was left in the closet was taken

As of April 19^th 2016 this hotel from 7:30 am till 6:30 pm has a
a large noisy building construction of another hi rise hotel right next door.
You wont sleep if you sleep past 7:30 am. This construction will last for
about a year and a half, the hotel does not warn you about this
Soon another hotel «The Virgin hotel: will be starting across the street from The Paul.
Forget this area if you hate drills and endless other construction sounds.

Just stayed at the Paul Hotel
Nice location right by the Empire State Building. Had to give a one star due to construction and lack of information regarding said construction.
I purchased on travelzoo so it was discounted, but for $ 179 a night I feel we could have stayed elsewhere and not been awaken abruptly at 7:03 by jack hammers.
The room next to us had quite a ruckus going on until 2 am which allowed us all of 5 hours sleep.
We should have been made aware at booking or at least check in.
I know they can’t control the neighbors construction but really! Bad info

The Paul was a lovely, cute little hotel. The rooms were cozy but big enough for two. We loved the design and overall aesthetic of the hotel. The bat and restaurant were empty but the bartender was very pleasant. Staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. The water wasn’t as hot as it could be, and construction started early in the morning, but overall we were happy.

I really liked this hotel and I’m sure glad it was our home for the 3 nights we stayed in NYC! This was my first trip ever to New York let alone the east coast so I was unsure of what to expect for a hotel room in Manhattan. Unfortunately, I don’t know how much exactly we paid per night since my brother booked us this hotel. However, they deserve the 4 star rating from me because it was a very chic, boutique like hotel. It was tall 29 or so floors, but small at the same time because there was only 4 rooms per floor. It reminded me of the compactness that happens in New York. The décor of the room was definitely trendy, retro and modern all rolled up into a small room. The room wasn’t exactly spacious, but I guess normal for NY standards? The continental breakfast was tasty in my onion, with servings such as sausages, potatoes and other things I can’t remember. There was another building behind ours, which was a viewable distance. It was cool because we could see through the windows and people watch on what they were doing (not to sound creepy or anything) in their room. Definitely something you can add to your New York experience. Haha! And to add to that I couldn’t tell if the floor we were looking at was a residence, business or office? Anyway, I think the best part was the view and its proximity to the Empire State building which was absolutely gorgeous! Writing this review makes me miss New York and can’t wait till the next time I visit. Oh yeah, it’s only located 2 blocks away from Korea town so if you like Korean food, getting your fix will be easy. My only gripe about the location is that some areas within walking distance of this place were kind of sketchy?!

Was booked in for a two week stay at this place on the trip before last to NYC but the customer service was so awful (along with cold showers and a stale breakfast) that we checked out the next day (thank god we didn’t pay upfront as the awful man at reception demanded! They also refused to acknowledge the cold water which all the other guests complained about)
We ended up around the corner at the ace hotel for the duration of our trip which was lovely and perfect!!!
(Also I’m very suspicious of the people leaving good reviews for this place… They look like paid accounts to me)

Small rooms but very well-​appointed. As far as boutique hotels go, this is well done.
Pros: comfortable beds, central A/​C worked great, attentive and courteous staff, central location
Cons: was promised a great «city view,» but instead saw some random buildings in Chelsea and a barely discernible view of a faraway Freedom Tower (wish they had told me the other side of the hotel would be preferred), the area is convenient but questionable as far as the city’s characters go (think peddlers selling discount handbags, luggage and perfumes along the street)
Would I be returning here again? Only if the rates were as low as I got them

2 Full size bed room for 4 guys? Yeah that was pretty rough fit, but we managed to make it work. The place was clean and modern, and the free internet worked well enough to work off of.
The view of the empire state building is really cool, but it looks like a hotel will be built right in front which will eventually block the view.
Just a tip, that there are two private bathrooms on the bottom floor of the hotel if the one in your room is occupied.

This room is super tiny (ok yes I know it is New York) but I was supposedly in some upgraded suite and it was SO TINY. I have no idea how four people are supposed to fit in this room with suitcases.
Luckily, when this family travels, we barely see the hotel!
I slept pretty peacefully (even when my sister left at 5 am to go to work) and was able to spread out on the bed without touching her. I do wish the hotel was bigger because it looks like there are only about 6 – 8 rooms per floor. We were shoved in a corner and didn’t hear any noise.

Having lived in NYC for 13 years, I could probably count on one hand — okay, maybe two — my number of hotel experiences in the city. This time, traveling for some work hooey (aka «business hullaballoo») and being met with the grim reality of NY Fashion Week, The Paul was my hotel of choice, or necessity.
For anyone unfamiliar with that strange void along Broadway betwixt Flatiron and Herald Square/​Garment District, dudes, it’s gotta be amongst the loudest and oddest pockets of Manhattan. I’ve had friends who live over there and I’m like, «Wait, why?» But there you have it. «It is what it is,» or some such, right?
My room was the smallest I’ve ever endured. My travel buddy, aka «Boss Fellow,» shot me a text saying, «Do you have bunk beds?» I didn’t, but sure enough, he did. Homeboy had bunkbeds, despite paying for a full/​queen room (he later had an upcharge of perhaps $ 50 [don’t quote me] to move). Dude is a 6’3″ Norwegian — a legit hotel should’ve sorted that matter at the front desk, not after the fact (my opinion), or at very least asked if he’s cool with bunk beds despite booking a full/​queen, right?
For some folks, the size of the room would be a turn-​off, but that’s the language of «boutique hotels,» right? «Boutique» = Micro? It didn’t bother me too much.
Customer service at the desk seemed pretty slow and puzzled at check-​in and check-​out. Mega meh.
The real conundrum, for me, was the situation of the room, up at the front. Windows were ineffective at drowning out that Sweet Sweet High-20’s Broadway Void™ ruckus. pray to science or your higher power that you’re not staying on a garbage pick-​up night (trust me). I cranked white noise from my iPhone. It helped, but I still lost significant Z’s.
Coming back to my first statement, I’ve limited experience with NYC hotels — but all experiences, to this point, have been generally positive. It wasn’t awful, not by a long shot, and the rooms were clean (probably just a quick blast of compressed air would clean ‘em out they’re so micro). and it saved me from sleeping on a park bench. but I’d refrain from booking The Paul next time around, personally.

Clean, Comfortable, Reasonable and Prime Location = Great Stay!
I had an opportunity to stay at The Paul in NYC for business. Location wise, it is great — it is on 29^th between 6^th Avenue and Broadway. It’s about a half mile from the Flatiron building and Madison Square Park and within walking distance of Penn Station. I did not choose my room, it was booked for me and I was booked into what they call a Queen Mod.
I parked just off 6^th avenue ($ 51.00 for less than 24 hours) and within a couple of minutes I was at The Paul. It is a tall narrow building set back slightly from the street with a small courtyard and tables in front. The lobby is small but clean and it has a nice feel about it. Service was friendly and I checked in and found my way to my room on the 4^th floor. There are only a handful of rooms on each floor — 6 – 7 tops and it reminded me of a Japanese hotel in scale. It was very clean and quiet. My room overlooked the courtyard and the street but it was quiet — no street noise was audible in my room.
The room was small — the queen bed took up most of the space so while it is advertised as lodging for two people, make sure you really like the other person if you share the room. It’s tight quarters. The room was pretty, quiet and had all the essentials I need: desk, high-​speed WiFi, mini fridge, comfortable bed and a nice shower and bathroom. I’m not much of a TV watcher but there was a nice flat panel in the room as well.
There is a wardrobe in the room but it was my only negative about the space. The wardrobe is split into drawers in the lower half and a very small hanging slot in the upper half which is taken up by the small portable ironing board. I was able to hang 3 shirts, a jacket and slacks before I ran out of hanging room. The hanging space was also not that long so my shirt bottoms hit the bottom of the hanging space and then some.
There is also a lack of electrical outlets. To iron my shirt, I had to plug the iron in the bathroom and it just reached the edge of the corner of the bed. I had to balance the small portable ironing board on the corner of the bed and then try to iron my shirt without losing grip on both the board, my shirt and the iron. However — it was a small annoyance overall.
The air conditioning was great — it was a sweltering day and my room was at a great 68 F. The bed was very comfortable and it was VERY QUIET. Great night sleep and great shower with rain shower head. The water could have been hotter but I just like really hot showers.
I would definitely stay at The Paul again but I would likely opt for the Terrace King or Terrace, Manhattan or Water Tower Double in terms of room choice.
No matter what room you choose, all the rooms are very reasonable — especially for NYC — and very comfortable in a very prime location for sightseeing and hanging out in Midtown or anywhere in NYC for that matter.
Clean, Comfortable, Reasonable and Prime Location = Great Stay!

Booked from Saturday June 20^th ’til Wednesday June 24^th for 250 $ a night. Ended up paying more…
Leisure trip for 2 adults. Been to city plenty of times before. We are in our late 20’s.
Flew into LGA, hailed a taxi to the hotel for 50 $. Road was closed on June 20^th for the construction of a new hotel across the street from The Paul. I did not know. I dragged two suitcases and a carry on down the block in around the corner to check in. Not their fault. Just letting travelers know.
The service desk is small and to the right. It had sticky juice and crumbs all over where you lean to sign. I made a comment politely about it so they would know for the next guest and the guy just snapped at me. Anyways…
My room I booked online was not ready. I was there after 3pm which was check in time. The rude concierge told me they had an open room on the 11^th floor with a «better view» and queen instead of the bunk beds I supposedly booked, (I did not want bunk beds) for an upgrade price.
I was so hot and annoyed already, I just paid the extra and went on my way.
No one offered to take my luggage up.
Room 1104.
Nothing special besides a view of the Empire State Building. Through filthy Windows… But then again… Construction across the street… No big deal, it’s NYC.
Room size was decent/​typical for New York. Been in places where the queen took up the whole room.

Mini fridge (not stocked). A bed. A dictionary. TV. Safe. Hairdryer. Iron… Typical.
Keurig coffee machine… Night tables in both had USB charging ports and outlets.
There’s «free» breakfast… Bagels, croissants, cereal, oj… Typical.
The RESTROOM was disgusting. They have some sort of caulk or glue that kept coming off as the water hit it. All over shower floor, all over sink (see pictures). It got on my feet and toiletries. The plumbing was horrible. Nothing flushed fully. Not even if you didn’t flush used toilet paper and tossed in trash instead. It would not flush fully until third time. Waste of water. They have thin rough toilet paper that didn’t flush. Sink and shower didn’t drain.
Oh, lol and there are no bathtubs… If that matters to you.
There’s an «automatic sensor» light in the bathroom that constantly shut off while I was standing there getting ready.
For some reason the air vent that was screwed shut above the toilet had a towel tucked into it… I don’t know what’s hidden in it, see pictures.
The construction noise could be heard all morning thru the walls. But it’s the city. No big deal. Nights are quiet, occasional siren. Bed was comfy. Just so travelers know. Slept fine.
The elevators are dirty and hot with fingerprints and chewed gum. And slower than molasses.
No bar, there is a couple tiny patio table and foldable chairs out front of the hotel to sit.
Location is great because I spent most of my time in Herald Square and Korean Town which was a couple mins walking distance.
I know it’s the city, but for how new the hotel is and the price I paid with the service i recieved. I’ve stayed at much nicer places in the city.

So, this was my first time booking a room in NYC. I have no idea what to expect. I needed two beds and the prices of everywhere else were ridiculous. The Paul did the trick, and we didn’t have too many complaints.
Got the bunk beds for just under $ 200/​night. Now, I know New York hotel rooms are supposed to be small, but this room was 68 square feet (not including toilet and shower). I mean, geezus. But, you make it work. You keep your luggage under the bed or on top of the armoire.
There’s no bathroom per say. There’s a shower next to a toilet (curtain in between) and the sink is out in the room. If you need it though, there are two spacious bathrooms on the basement floor of the hotel. No one seems to know about them. Terrible lighting for the bathroom sink. Also, limited overhead light too.
Beds are far more comfortable than they look, given that the place appears to be stocked from an Ikea showroom. We got a room with a view, and by «view, they apparently meant a window facing the street. We saw a lovely demolished construction site.
AC works amazing, and on a hot NYC summer day, this is crucial. We ran it all night and part of the day, no problemo. Then again, our room was 68 square feet.
Free breakfast from 7 – 10 a.m. includes coffee, orange juice, cereal, apples/​oranges, toast/​bagels and small pastries. Can’t complain because it’s free.
I dealt with three different people at the front desk during my week’s stay, and all of them were so friendly and helpful. Wanted to make sure I had a good time, offered me bottles of water. Really nice people.
Location-​wise not much to see but there is a metro entrance right around the corner and you are 10 blocks from Times Square.

We stayed here for a very busy weekend in the city. I got a deal on Priceline for $ 436 for two nights. Arrived at the hotel and was able to check in right away, which was great. The staff was very friendly. I was told ahead of time that the room would be determined at check in. When we got off the elevator, we walked in to find that we’d been given one of the bunk bed rooms.
Pros — everything was super clean, bedding, bathroom, sink, everything. The outlets worked and although the room was super tiny, there were 3 televisions! One for each bunk and another on the wall. Air conditioning was working super well, a plus since we walked about a mile to get there. Mattresses were super comfortable.
Cons — so little space for so much money. I get that it’s NYC, but holy moly, this was tight. Also my bed didn’t have a blanket. When we called to the desk to try and get one, they said they were out and gave me two queen sized sheets for my twin sized bed. Bathroom sink was in the room, because not enough space in the actual bathroom.
Overall, the room did its job. We had a clean place to sleep after being out and about all day and night. The staff were kind, and let us leave our luggage after checking out but before we were ready to leave the city, the aesthetics are really well done, and it’s in a great location. Get some blankets and warn people they’ll be sleeping in a twin sized bed and we’ll be good to go :)

Lowlights:
* You can only check-​in at 4pm. Most hotels are 3pm so this policy is stupid.
* There is construction going on next door. Jackhammer fires up at 9am EVERY MORNING. They do not tell you this when you book. Your vacation is f-​ed if you want to sleep in.
* The room we paid for was $ 350/​night! Hotwire got us better rates on better hotels nearby. Our next hotel is an $ 800/​night room for $ 200/​night.
* The hotel room doors all SLAM. If you are a light sleeper DO NOT BOOK.
* The hotel rooms do not have a bathtub. It is the strangest thing, the shower water runs directly into a drain on the FLOOR of the bathroom. That means right after you shower if someone else wants to use the commode then the floor is all wet… That’s right. They even had disposable cheap foam sandals in the room to help out but this is weird and gross.
Highlights
