Dane is truly a miracle worker, I will never go to anyone else in the city. Not only is he obviously very skilled, but he really listens to what you want and always knows exactly what I’m trying to describe, even if I can barely put it into words. He also is so fun to talk to, so gentle with my hair, and so complimentary! Seriously love him!

Let me wax poetic about Dane. I was a customer who could have easily been a quick, no cares appointment. I was a walk in, the chances of me being back are slim (I’m traveling for work). But Dane took care of me in such a way that, if it were financially feasible, I would fly to the city to have him cut my hair each and every time. I had a general vision of what I wanted (more volume, a little less length, and overall cleaned up), but Dane gave me better hair than I ever could have dreamed of. Go, be his loyal customer since I can’t – you and your hair will never look back!

Y’all are the best. I found this place through Unilocal and everything was lovey from there on out. Scheduling (and then rescheduling) was easy and pleasant, Petra was super funny and professional and very gracious when I mixed up my bills and under-​tipped a bit (sorry Petra!). I was back out the door in under 45 minutes, and my hair looks and feels great. I swear that Petra read my mind; she gave me exactly the haircut I wanted even though I was having too much fun talking to her and everyone else there to actually detail what I had in mind. And the student discount doesn’t hurt! This was honestly the best hair experience I’ve ever had.

Go see Marissa! She is excellent. Marissa took her time and gave me one of the best cuts I’ve ever had. I’ve been going to the same stylist for years, and I don’t let anyone touch my hair. I’m very attached to my hair, and am too scared to risk a bad cut. Anyways, I decided it was time for a change, my go to stylist wasn’t cutting hair as good anymore, always in a rush. My friend who has very nice hair recommended Marissa so I decided to check her out. Marissa separated my hair in sections and worked little by little. Piece by piece. Checking to make sure that my hair was even from all angles. My hair was in really bad shape, I hadn’t cut it since April, so you can imagine. Mid back, full of dead ends, frizzy etc… My hair is really fine, looks very thin and tends to curl at the ends. Marissa put life back into my hair. She gave me great layers, it has so much body and bounce now, and looks so full and healthy. The layers fall perfectly, and don’t have that rough choppy look at the ends that most stylists do because they think it adds body/​texture. After she cut my hair and styled it, she want back to do a final inspection and trimmed any pieces that didn’t fall into place perfectly. It looks like a very expensive cut. Needless to say, I’m a happy customer. Added plus, she has a great personality, very funny, made great conversation and gave great styling tips. Made me feel very comfotable. You can tell she really knows what she is talking about. Seriously, go check out Marissa. I will definitely come back again when it’s time for my next cut.

One appointment with Petra was all it took to convert me from a Supercuts girl to a Little Hair Shoppe fan! I usually ask her to do whatever she feels like, and it’s always something fresh that I am in love with! I’ve been eager to go back after my last cut (an asymmetrical bob), but it’s growing out so well that I don’t need to yet!
Everyone is super nice and friendly here — it’s definitely worth the trip, no matter where you’re coming from!

An update — as I said I would. I came back to LHS a few times after my initial review. First time I got a haircut and it was good. Pricier than I’m used to, but I’m not much of a big spender on anything, so I figured my hair could be an exception. Turns out that’s just their standard price (which is listed on their website), so I couldn’t be too upset over it.
Came back after that to venture into a new hair color. I wanted an auburn red but without bleach if possible to protect the integrity of my hair as much as possible. I had really dark roots (about 7ish inches of regrowth) with the bottom of my hair a lighter brown with streaks of blonde. Petra lightened my roots to match and added the color. The result was nice, but I’ve definitely had better results with boxed hair dye at home. Plus my roots were super bright and my hairline was stained red.
I gave them the benefit of the doubt and returned again for a touch up after I had a reasonable amount of growth and faded color. Petra was working on another client at the same time as me and seemed really distracted. Her assistant was basically the one doing most of the process on me. Once finished, I noticed my hair looked darker than when we started and not really what I was looking for. The price took me off guard but being that it was «Manhattan price», I tried to shrug it off.
Once I got to different lighting (home/​work), I noticed my roots were still very visible. I emailed them and they let me make another appointment to come in. Once there, I told Petra my concerns but she kept cutting me off by asking «so what DO you want?», and never really giving me a chance to respond properly. Even my friend (who had offered to come for moral support) was appalled. I asked if she could fix it, and if it would be free of charge, and she said yes. I then decided to bring up the price but lowered my voice out of respect. This seemed to anger her because she even pointed out another woman getting her hair done and told me how much hers cost. She told me I was paying for her time and expertise. She also stressed how long my hair is and how much hair I have. My initial point was: how is a touch up the same price as a full head of color? She said if I had told her a budget she would’ve worked around it. Shouldn’t that have been one of her first questions? Not everyone has an unlimited disposable income to spend on their hair. She got so frustrated with the situation she offered to give me a refund for the coloring and told me I should find another stylist. Safe to say I took her offer and advice.
I liked the ambiance and everyone was seemingly nice but I can never justify spending sooo much money again especially if I’ve had better results at home with my own hands. If you have a LOT ($$$) of money to spare, and are satisfied with just about anything, this is your place.

I have curly hair and my curls felt weighed down. I wanted more «oomph» and Kris brought my hair to life! He was attentive to my interests and meticulous in his work. He gave me exactly what I asked for! My hair now feels so light and the layers added great volume! Excited for my next visit!

Dane is absolutely the Best. When I was describing what I wanted, he practically finished off my idea. I was getting my long hair which stopped around close to my waist cut into a pixie. Dramatic change for me, but Dane made me feel very confident and comfortable. I probably won’t be going anywhere else but here anymore. I highly recommend it.

Looked this little place up online and thought the name was cute. I decided to give it a try and Kris helped me find the best cut. He listened to what i thought I wanted and gave me his own opinion as the expert that he clearly is. My hair looks awesome! I’m definitely going back to Kris.

Took my 4 year old daughter here today for her first hair cut she pretty much had long hair and we wanted something new. To start of Dane was the one grooming and styling, let me tell you he did an amazing job on her. He was very friendly and child approved lol because my daughter is a fussy one. Everyone loves her new do. Thnx Dane once again!

I’ve been coming here for about 3 years, and I love it. Chris is great! I have curly hair and color it red, so those are two difficult things to get right, but he always does!

From the moment I walked in, I was glad I did. The staff is incredibly warm and friendly, super down to earth. I came in with very long hair and I was ready to chop it all off. Yep, pixie status. Dustin was fantastic, a true artist. He knows what he is doing. If you’re someone who has short hair or wants short hair, trust Dustin to take care of it. This is the happiest I have ever been with a haircut. I actually can’t wait to come in for a trim. 5 stars Little Hair Shoppe. You may be little but you are mighty.

Kris! Why did I have to meet you right before moving out of NYC? I am SUPER SUPER picky about my blonde highlights. And I’m almost NEVER 100% satisfied with tone, weight and style of highlights. Kris nailed the tone perfectly. I was reminded of this as I just went in for touchup highlights in LA area, using the same description and photos I gave Kris, it came out warm, orange and not at all what I like. The stylist said it was impossible to get what I said I was looking for and I said «yeah, well, this guy in NYC did it a few months ago.» Here’s lookin’ at you, Kris. Negative: despite all the reviews saying that The Little Hair Shoppe has good prices for NYC, I find it to be a bit steep for me still. Obs I’m super satisfied with service, though.

I shaved my Indian hair off last year and after months of growing it out and grooming with a great barber, it was time to step up my game to a real hair salon.
I found both this hair salon and Dustin through Unilocal.I like the down to earth feel of the space and the fact that Dustin can work without carrying conversation the entire time. What I mean is, I don’t talk a lot during a hair cut and I appreciate that Dustin gets that vibe. He is incredibly meticulous about his work and won me over after the first cut.
I recommend him for short pixie cuts, and especially if you have super thick hair, he is excellent at taking weight off while understanding the bigger picture.

Stumbled upon this adorable hair salon today and left extremely happy. Petra is amazing at what she does. She cut my hair so perfect, gave me advice, and left me extremely satisfied. I will definitely come back!

Love this salon SO much.
I see Dane here and he is amazing. Not only does he cut my hair extremely well (and he saved it from a disaster haircut I had at the Aveda Institute back last summer), he is one of the few hair stylists I’ve ever actually enjoyed talking to, because he is so nice and funny — I think we’ve all been there during an awkward small talk situation, whether during a hair appt or doctor appt or whatnot. Anyway, not an issue here. It’s always a pleasurable experience, from the haircut to the conversation. I despise when my hair looks «freshly cut» because it’s long and straight and I think it looks too blunt. I mentioned this to Dane the first time and whenever I leave the salon, my hair looks healthy, happy, and full of volume but not freshly cut :) Everyone who works here is completely unpretentious. On top of all of that, the cuts are under $ 100, which for this quality cut in Manhattan is a steal.

I was a little hesitant to rate and review a place based on one bang trim, but I hate what this woman did so much and the reviews are so glowing that I want to warn people that not everyone loves this place.
I just wanted a TRIM, I already had bangs and asked for a trim, not a crazy new bang style. She curled them under with a round brush, which worried me, for good reason, and then thinned them in some weird way and instead of blunt or straight across, she made them all pointy with top layers that are way, way shorter than the rest of my bangs. and the sides curl forward in a very weird, ugly way and they don’t even look even, like some strands are longer.
When she was done I asked, «why are they pointy?» And I pulled at them because she’d made them so fucking short and she said, «that’s just the way it’s styled.» Then i felt them and it felt like half the hair thickness usually there is gone, it was weird. So I asked if she thinned them or something and she said, no, I cut them. I don’t know what the precise definition of «thin» is in hair styling terms, but there is definitely much less hair in my bangs than before.
I probably sound crazy ranting this way, but I have had at least 6 different people cut my bangs over the years and no one has ever cut them like this. They are so fucked up. And she knew I was unhappy but took my money anyway.
I will say that I showed up 5 or 10 mins late and she was very nice about cutting them anyway. But in hindsight I wish she’d turned me away. If you want bangs that look like they were cut in 1988, I guess you should go here.

Ok so I am a guy who pays to get his hair straightened and recently had his hair somewhat messed up at Dramatics. Clearly I needed a change and/​or a different venue. I spoke with the owner Petra about my hair needs and how things went badly for me and she not only listened and understood what I had to say but offered me a competitive price and promised I would have a better experience and result. Boy did she keep her word and went waaaaayyyyy above and beyond.
This place is awesome! What a cute and beautifully decorated space in the east village. Everyone there is soooooo nice and the customer service is really awesome (everyone is super attentive to you). So I got my hair straightened in a pretty fast and efficient way and I loved the results. The owner then touched up my hair to make sure I left there looking and feeling magnificent. What an amazing experience. I will be back for sure. Seriously I am very fussy about my hair (for a male) and this place does not disappoint in anyway! Did I mention that I already have gotten compliments on my hair… isn’t that the best endorsement?

The prices at the Little Hair Shoppe are steep (around $ 67 for a men’s haircut), but they’re worth the investment if you want both a fashionable haircut and strong customer service. I’ve been here twice and both experiences were very positive. On both visits, making an appointment was easy and the people who work their desk are nice and helpful both over the phone and in person. Dustin and Dane have both cut my hair, and they listened to how I wanted my hair cut while also giving me some creative feedback.
I’ve been to some salons where the styling was good and the service terrible and other places where the stylists were nice and couldn’t cut hair. At the Little Hair Shoppe, the stylists are friendly and hard-​working and they also cut hair expertly.

Marisa has made me into a new woman!
She took me up as a last minute appointment and also stole me away from Dustin – couldn’t have been happier!
After scouring Unilocal trying to find the perfect salon to go to, I settled for The Little Hair Shoppe. It had spectacular reviews and so many tips that mentioned Dustin. I immediately called in and booked an appointment with him. I had called to get a cut and color but Dustin wasn’t going to have enough time for the color.
I had arrived an hour before my appointment and Rob was gracious enough to connect me with Marisa. She had agreed to do both my cut and color. While I was reluctant at first, since I hadn’t remembered reading much about Marisa, I am actually glad that Dustin wasn’t available because Marisa has just earned herself a lifelong client.
Marisa and I sat down and discussed what exactly I was looking for. It was my first time getting a color job done in a salon so I was very nervous and wasn’t sure what to expect. I have a small round face and was looking to get a fringe cut with some highlights or an ombré. Marisa took a look at the pictures I had saved on my phone for reference and was instantly able to visualize the perfect cut and color style for me. Mind you, she is the only hair stylist to date that has NOT turned me down for a full on bang/​fringe cut. I had asked for a fringe cut before from other stylists and they had all said that my face was too small and the cut would not look on my face. Boy, were the wrong– I look gorgeous! ;)
I ended up going with chestnutty highlights and bangs across my forehead with deep layers. Marisa was patient in explaining all my questions about the process and how to manage my hair after. Since I lack visualization skills, I heavily leaned on Marisa’s expertise and skills– I went with her choice of highlight colors. We were both on the same page. I was looking for a natural, subtle look that was definitely noticeable.
3 hours later, I came out of that salon as a new woman. I was absolutely floored by my new hairstyle and the lack of maintenance it would need. Marisa had also suggested and noted a few products I should get to keep the salon look fresh. She also had me sold on the moroccoan oil products that they had both used on my hair and sold at the salon.
My hair cut was about $ 300. Cut is usually about $ 85 and coloring is $ 215 without tax.
On a side note, I love everyone here. Everyone is so friendly and amazing. The owner Petra (?) does cuts alongside everyone else and is just a great character. Nick the guy who shampooed my hair is also a total sweetheart! Not to mention, the place is cozy and cute — not one of those snobby, too-​cool-​for-​school looking places that you always pass by in Manhattan.
I can say with confidence that I will not be going anywhere else for my cuts and color.
