The Eyeman

I have been going here for both eye exams and glasses for almost 20 years. They aren’t cheap, but they get the job done well. I have tried a few chain eye shops and on-​line providers and have been disappointed with the quality of goods provided. I’m a fan.

Love Eye Man– the staff and Dr. Leong are really personable and knowledgeable. They will spend time looking for the perfect frame and even special order if you want a different color. I am definitely a repeat customer!

Just got fitted for glasses and sent home with 2 different brand trial contact pairs by Dr. Leong.
She’s highly professional, had carefully listened to my feedback, questions, &c &c and sent me out the door an extremely happy customer.

I’m currently visiting family in NYC and I inadvertently lost my glasses just before arriving in the city. I walked in late on Tuesday afternoon and explained that I was leaving for Europe on Sunday and needed to replace my glasses before then. Dr. Leong gave me a thorough examination and an excellent prescription. The order for new frames and lenses was put in on Tuesday night and I received my new glasses with progressive lenses this afternoon. I was treated very nicely and especially appreciated the prompt service as I really didn’t want to continue to travel without my glasses.

Dr. Leong is very good. The man is very good. The rest are kind of rough edged and give you mouth and attitude if you take your time to try on glasses or change your mind, or are not quite sure if you like their frames. The women get impatient and you get this attitude that you are a pain in arse because you don’t just chose and plunk down 1k, which is what my frames and lenses would cost if I filled the script there — which i guess is about average. I feel an undercurrent of «we don’t want browsers and we peg you the minute you don’t just hurry up and decide.» It also feels like they get angry when you just can’t find the frames and then you feel like they tell you anything so that you end up buying. It’s all about them and they give off a vibe that they care very little if the frames work on your face or not — they just want you to buy and hurry up about it — put more cash in their tills. They are not concerned that you spend your money on such expensive items — they just want you to spend it –on them.
I wish Dr. Leong and the professional man would set up shop on their own.

I walked in because I was looking for a new pair of glasses and I was welcomed by an ill-​tempered older woman with an attitude. She would not let me browse the glasses without her standing right next to me. She asked me if I had my prescription and I told her I could have my prescription sent over if I found a pair of frames I liked. She then told me she didn’t want me setting aside the frames I liked and that she was putting them back in the case. I told her I would leave and she said «good, thank you.» I was shocked at how rude she was to me! Completely unhelpful. I will never be going back to this place.

I went to their very nice store last weekend. Even though it was close to closing
time, Ellen took considerable time to go through options for my glasses. I had previously been tested by Dr. Leong, who did an extremely thorough job in her examination.
I am extremely happy with their service and prices.

Dr. Leong is patient, thorough, and knowledgeable.
Ellen is helpful and highly competent.
Good selection of styles, convenient hours, pleasant environment.

I just went there yesterday, and Dr. Leong and the staff were great. However, I went back today to pick up my prescription and the office manager (I am guessing) was definitely not the customer friendly type. She was argumentative and her communication skills were poor.

I have been coming here since I was a little girl. They are always honest with their opinions – whether it be the right frame for your face or the right price for the frame. I got my glasses there before I got Lasik and came back for my sunglasses multiple times. Now I need distance glasses (silly Lasik!) again and just got some really rad hipster-​but-​not-​too-​hipster glasses here. I described what I was looking for as «trendy, but not extremely hipster, you know? But young? And cool?» and they knew exactly what I was talking about even though I really didn’t. Mine were among the first three pairs the assistant picked out – even after trying on five other pairs I kept coming back to them. Rock on.

Great frames for every type of style (from the hipster to the serious mr.), great service, and great jelly beans. What’s not to like?

Our toddler was diagnosed as farsighted and needed glasses quickly. The ophthalmologist gave us a list of business on the UWS where we could get children’s glasses fitted and the Eye Man was on the list and the doctor said they were good with kids.
We went there on a Wednesday and Ellen helped us. She was super patient with our child and helped us pick a great pair. I also needed new glasses so she helped me as well. My older pair were 2 years old and I had never been happy with the way they fit, and Ellen showed me why. She picked several frames for me to try and I liked most of them. I told Ellen that there was no rush with my glasses since I have my old pair plus contacts, but please rush my child’s. Friday morning Ellen called and said the glasses were ready! BOTH pairs — mine, too!
We picked them up that afternoon and couldn’t be happier. Ellen adjusted each pair and had us try them on until we were content and our child is wearing the glasses all the time b/​c they are so comfortable. I am happy with mine as well.

I had a sudden need for reading glasses while evacuated during hurricane Sandy and these folks hustled like mad to make it happen for me post haste and to get me the forms to have my insurance cover it. Now I have a temporary need for regular glasses and again, fast and spot on, they delivered. While in the shop, you can see that every person who comes or calls in has an urgent need to get a replacement or get their glasses fixed or get their new prescription or frames and they accommodate everyone — I guess it is the nature of the business that every job is a rush and if some small percentage are not satisfied, they are the most vocal. The shop has always been busy when I have been there, so I guess that is a sign of their success in making many people happy with their products and services. I am one of those very happy customers and they have earned my loyalty.

The Eyeman is the greatest! I’ve been coming here for almost 15 years and they never fail to be helpful, friendly and accommodating.

I went to the Eye Man for a driver’s license eye exam, which took 2 minutes. The woman, who did the test told me that my eyesight was so bad, that I barely made it (⁴⁰⁄₅₀).
Quickly I scheduled an eye exam with my regular ophthalmologist who told me that the test result of the Eye Man was incorrect and that my eyesight is ²⁰⁄₃₀.
I called the Eye Man and told them about this «oversight» (pardon the pun), but they showed no remorse.

Took my daughter there for her exam and frames a couple of months ago. Dr. Leong was extremely kind, personable, and thorough. The staff… Not so much. Overall, they did what was needed and we received her frames in a timely fashion. Would I traipse over there again for myself? Meh. I’ll give our insurance provider a go first.

Very unhelpful staff, at best apathetic, at worst borderline rude. Will not be buying my glasses here.

NYC DOE TEACHERS BEWARE!!! Long review, but gives you a good idea of what kind of business the Eyeman runs… I wish I could give them ZERO stars.
As a New York City public school teacher, my optical services are covered under the UFT Welfare Fund, which the Eyeman is supposed to accept and adhere to the contract terms because they sign a contract! However, they do not and will not…
On 6÷21÷11
I went in for an eye exam with Dr. Leong, who was pleasant, but it wasn’t the most thorough exam I have received. As soon as the staff in front found out I was covered under the UFT Welfare Fund (which they are supposed to accept), I was left to my own devices searching for glasses for at least 20 min. until one of the 3 employees (who were all idling) decided to help me. This is a very small store!
After I picked a pair of frames, the employee who sat down to ring up my order told me that though they «accept» my UFT insurance, they don’t follow the billing formula they are supposed to, but only take off a flat rate. (Thereby, overcharging me!) I didn’t have my UFT insurance booklet with me so I didn’t know whether they are permitted to do this. I left a small deposit for my order and called the UFT the next day…
I found out that any participating UFT optician has to:
a. following the billing formula
(The Eyeman overcharged me by over $ 150 because they didn’t).
b. charge me their regular prices for lenses and the discount price for coatings
(The Eyeman charged me $ 225 for lenses they usually charge only $ 125).
On 6÷24÷2011…
I went to pick up the frames and speak to the owner about the billing issue. I assumed that they would want to correct it. Well, they didn’t…
When I asked to speak to the owner, he refused to come out and talk to me. Instead, he hid behind a partition in the store and another employee relayed messages. They refused to correct the billing issue, gave me my deposit back, and told me to «complain to my UFT insurance if it made me feel better».
Opticians are a dime a dozen on the Upper West Side. Try Pildes or the Eye Q Optometrist. When you are spending several hundred dollars on a service, you deserve a smile, thank you, and apology, if necessary. The Eyeman has no concept of customer service. Go elsewhere!!!

I wrote my review on «The Eye Man» version of this location, but it’s the same place. You can read if you wish, but overall Dr. Leong is awesome and they have a good selection of $ 99 glasses frames if you’re not looking for anything too fancy.

in the market for new glasses? this is never a simple process, and can actually frustrate and depress. but the staff at the eye man on broadway is patient and wonderful, helping to select and suggest the best frames to suit your face. the array of glasses range from moderate to high end designer frames — something for every budget!
the optometrist who saw me (dr. pauline leong) is considerate, thoughtful and knowledgeable. she’s thorough too, and a real pleasure. i never felt hurried or rushed; her demeanor was calm, reassuring and professional. she is certainly someone i would recommend to anyone in need of an eye exam!
