History

Established in 1993.

In 1993, Steven Birnbaum and and Robert Bullock formed «Birnbaum and Bullock», a partnership known for exquisitely produced gowns with uncompromising attention to detail. In 2009, Steven launched «the steven birnbaum collection», a chic and modern collection with a whimsical take on the «All American Girl». 2015 brought the breathtakingly beautiful «Steven Birnbaum Bespoke Collection». «Bespoke» is Steven’s custom-​made collection. It is hand-​crafted in his New York Atelier, allowing Steven the opportunity to work with brides individually. The «Bespoke» bride benefits from Steven Birnbaum’s talents and guidance every step of the way; a truly memorable experience.

I went there because of one dress, leaving in love with another. The dresses are unique and of high quality. The fabrics feel different. That is my favorite part about this place.
Anthony was great, in terms of both attitude and taste! The dresses he pulled for me was really flattering and unique, and he helped to pinned me in to see the finished look. The dresses are beautiful. It’s just I don’t feel 100% like me in the dresses. If I were a little bit more sophisticated myself, I would have chosen one of them. So if you are an elegant, unique and sophisticated bride or you want to look this way, definitely check this place out.
My little complaint about this place is that after two appointments, I didn’t really get to meet the designer. Maybe it’s my low budget. But like I just said, Anthony was great too. It’s just that I went to this place with that expectation because I see that in so many reviews, so there is a little disappointment.

The best bridal shop any mother of the bride can go with their daughter, Anthony is awesome loves his job and it shows nothing is a chore whatever I asked for he gladly obliged, and the gowns timeless, loved every gown my daughter was pinned in yes pinned which by the way makes a huge difference, we can’t stop looking at the pictures we took each gown looks good on my daughter and photographed well and most important a bride will leave with the perfect fitted dress from this salon. I am glad that I accidentally found this salon by reading a Unilocal review for Pronovia thank you Unilocalers.

No search for a bridal gown is complete without a visit to Birnbaum and Bullock and a consultation with Anthony. Each dress is more beautiful than the last. Their selection offers styles for every bride and the fabrics are beyond gorgeous, featuring several that they have designed exclusively for their gowns. Definitely a great experience!

I found a gorgeous dress here that was just a touch above my budget after trying on 3 almost dresses and visiting 2 other shops. TBH, I could probably have been persuaded if service wasn’t so lukewarm. Darcy was courteous but never personal, and this kind of experience doesn’t get more personal. Anyway, what I can say was that the dress selection is plenty but not overwhelming, prices are moderate, quality is high, and the space is lovely (and 3 blocks from my apt!). What it came down to was whether I would be happy and at ease coming back for my multiple fittings and the staff just did not do it for me.

I got married two years ago in an amazing dress by Robert Bullock; the compliments were overwhelming when I wore it! While I was deciding, all appointments were warm, professional, and unrushed. There were two small problems later in the process: the dress needed to be taken in and shortened twice (though I hasn’t changed in size, and had to pay for the second round of tailoring), and the bustle was never explained to me, so I had trouble figuring it how to pull in the (albeit tiny) train during the reception. Otherwise, I was deliriously happy with the style, price, and fit of my dress, and my interactions with the designers and staff. Brides looking for a unique, chic, and sleek dress should definitely take a look.

I loved working with Birnbaum and Bullock from start to finish.
I was not a bride who always dreamed of my dress and I had so much trouble deciding. Everyone here was so helpful, they let me come back as many times as I wanted to try it on to make sure it was the dress (which was helpful because they don’t allow pictures and I couldn’t remember what the dress looked like the second I left the store). I finally made my choice and it was most definitely the right one.
The two designers are on site and help you throughout the process, whether it’s their dress or from their partners line, which was great. I picked a Robert Bullock dress, which I fell in love with but Steven was also there to help me from start to finish and he was amazing to work with as well.
I am very petite and since they are the designers, they were able to make me dress in a petite style. They helped me accessorize the dress perfectly and were honest when what I may have liked didn’t look the best that I could look (i.e., I loved a belt there but Steven told me due to my height, it cut me in half and made me look shorter and he was 100% right). When I had my 2nd and final fitting, I felt I needed a 3rd fitting and additional alternations to be made (we were less than two weeks out from the wedding) and they were able to accommodate me no problem.
I would highly recommend getting your dress here. The experience of working directly with designers who are extremely talented and have a wide selection of dresses to suit almost every taste is unparalleled. One of the best decisions I made while wedding planning :)

As the Mother-​of-​the-​Bride I was dreading going to look for a wedding dress for my daughter. Since middle school our biggest arguments had always been over clothes. She and I were convinced our tastes were diametrically opposed and we would hate whatever the other person selected.
Birnbaum and Bullock was our first stop. With Robert Bullock’s keen eye and flair for design, he handpicked design elements from several gowns, creating not only the most flattering and unique gown, but THE MOST STUNNING WEDDING DRESS I had ever seen! He combined the neckline from one design, with the trumpet skirt/​train of another and added cap sleeves. Robert even explained how the entire dress could be made out of lace, thereby satisfying every requirement and preconceived notion we had. Robert Bullock performed a miracle that day, in that mother and daughter were 100% in agreement.
Yes, we went to Kleinfeld’s and a few other places, just to satisfy our curiosity. Initially my daughter thought she wanted a Monique Lhuillier lace dress. However when she tried it on, it paled in comparison. After coming from the Birnbaum and Bullock showroom, the Monique dress looked like a cross between a slip and a potato sack. And it was more expensive than the Birnbaum and Bullock gown. The overall quality, custom design and attention to detail at Birnbaum and Bullock’s made our choice obvious. The dress was the perfect reflection of my daughter’s style and accentuated all of her positive features. She looked amazing in her original Birnbaum and Bullock gown and our guests are still talking about that dress. Thank you Robert and everyone at Birnbaum and Bullock’s!

Great experience from start to finish. Highly recommend coming here on your wedding dress search. If you’re not quite sure what you want, you can browse the racks first to pick out the dresses you want to try and get a feel for different styles/​fabrics. They have a nice variety of dresses, and it is not as overwhelming as some of the dress stores in NYC with hundreds of dresses to choose from. Once you narrow it down, the consultant can help suggest dresses for you to try if you let them know your preference.
While I was trying on dresses I realized I liked the lace of one dress, but the style of another. B&B suggested we create a unique dress just for me, by combining the two — amazing! It came out better than I could have imagined and I could not have had a better dress shopping experience. The dresses are beautiful and high quality. During each of your appointments you get personalized, unrushed attention, often from Stephen or Robert themselves! Prices are also reasonable and they have a wide range depending on your budget.

What a wonderful experience! Steven and Robert are geniuses, I cannot tell you how gorgeous their work is. Each gown is extremely well-​designed, with incredible attention to detail, and excellent choice of fabrics and materials. When you buy a gown with lace on it here, you’re getting gorgeous Alencon lace beautifully detailed, not stick on appliques or itchy doilies up against your neck to annoy you the whole ceremony. I felt like I was trying on a costume from an Opera production every time I went in for a fitting!
Steven is a delight to work with, and a true artist. There were so many tiny touches and finishes that he suggested, or teeny alterations I lost count, but the result was stunning. Who knew a ¼ of an inch off the waist would make a world of difference in how the entire neckline and bust looked? Steven did :-) He has a wonderful appreciation and understanding of how to make gowns flattering and elegant but still striking and unique. You will not encounter anything that makes you feel fat or ugly or anything less than beautiful. Everyone looks like a princess in their work, and trust me! I saw plenty of other brides trying on dresses there and they all looked beautiful.
I cannot recommend them highly enough. I don’t know, maybe some people want to be crammed into a packed appointment schedule to meet with an 18 year old girl with no clue and be forced to choose only three dresses to try on from an overwhelming collection of shopworn, poorly-​cared for dresses in 45 minutes because the TV crews are coming in for the next appnt… Not me though. I absolutely adored my serene, unique, knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and talented experience with B&B. There is absolutely something for everyone here and it is a joy to have such a wonderful experience in the chaos that is wedding planning. Thank you Steven!!!

DISCLAIMER: This review is based solely on the experience of a wedding gown appointment, not purchasing a gown and/​or alternations (I haven’t bought a gown yet – but it’s likely it WILL be from here)
That said, this place is amazing. They’re so nice, patient, and helpful. They put absolutely zero pressure on you to make a decision before you’re ready and encourage you to make sure you are absolutely 100% certain.
My consultant was Mandy. She was extremely helpful, listened to what I liked, and then as more details came out about the wedding (size, formality, etc.) she knew exactly what dresses should be eliminated. Most importantly, she didn’t make her opinions over bearing and was very attentive to what I was looking for. I ended up loving a dress that was completely NOT what I thought I wanted. I need to look around some more (this was my first appointment and it was the first dress I tried on), but it’s likely I will be back to Birnbaum and Bullock to buy the dress.
Another giant plus to this place, the designers work directly out of the boutique, allowing you to customize just about anything.

Buying a dress was the part of the wedding planning process I feared most – as an over-​40, not super girly girl I just couldn’t deal with a huge SYTTD type experience. I found Birnbaum & Bullock through Unilocal and then fell in love with the Callie dress on their website. Everyone I showed it to agreed it was gorgeous and totally me. Only thing is, I’m also cheap, so when I found a J. Crew dress for $ 60 final sale I bought it and decided to put Callie out of my mind.
Fast forward, I find out they’re having a sample sale, make an appointment, and when I walk in there’s Callie in my size, and she fits perfectly except needing a hem. I didn’t love how the belt cut me so the designers offer to make me a sash using the same fabric as the piping on the neckline and mock up an example. Sold!
Robert did my fittings and was absolutely wonderful to work with. Alterations and the sash were very reasonable.
I loved my dress, and in the end my only regret was not paying full price as I would have been able to spend more time hanging out with the guys. ;) Thank you!

This place is amazing for a bride in search of her dress!
The consultant we had (Haley) was so nice and helpful. She helped pull different dresses for the bride to try on and was really great with finding the right sashes and veils.
The dresses here were of the best quality… of course at a price but nonetheless beautiful, well designed dresses.
We came here on a Saturday at 4pm and it was quiet so it was nice to get the utmost attention. If you have the money and want a beautiful dress, this is where you go! Service is A+.

B&B was a wonderful experience. I worked with both Stephen and Robert during my appointment and they were lovely. There really is something to be said for being able to speak directly with the people who designed the dresses you’re trying on.
They offer a great variety of styles at a wide range of price points. They’re friendly, accommodating, and completely upfront about what can and cannot be done to a dress during the alterations process — they designed the dresses, after all.
Other than not having the exact right thing for me, I would definitely steer anyone here who is looking for a personal, fun experience with some beautiful and creative dresses.

Birnbaum & Bullock Ltd = Classy
The place is quiet, a little dark (natural lighting from the large windows) and the staff is very quiet and sweet. I found what I thought was my dream dress here. The gown are very gorgeous. Romantic and princessy. Gosh, I loved that dress. I ended up going with another dress which was more of a head turner but these gowns, sigh. Love them. Strange how they did not offer refreshments for my 2nd visit.

I came here with 3 friends and it was my very first bridal appt. I was SO excited, especially since I used to work across the street and pass it by so many times I knew I’d come here when the time came. The studio was spacious, accommodating, staff was helpful and patient — really no complaints. I felt special from the moment I walked in. Gowns were beautifully displayed on racks with labels that were easy to read and determine pricing quickly. Also, they weren’t in protective plastic sleeves, so it was much easier to see and determine whether you were attracted to the style or not.
I didn’t find my gown here but I’d recommend coming if you’re looking to start your search.

OMG, I don’t have enough good words to say about Robert Bullock. He’s absolutely fantastic. This will take a while so bear with me. My sister and I went to see Robert in his stunning gallery on a rainy NY afternoon. I was so weary of wedding-​gown salespeople at that point that meeting Robert was a breath of fresh air. He took one look at me and immediately brought out 5 stunning dresses from his collection. I didn’t know which one to choose from — they all looked fantastic. Oh, did I mention, I was the only bride in his salon??! I know, surprising. It turns out, that’s how they conduct business. They make a bride feel special :)
Getting one on one attention from Robert was amazing. Finding out that I was dealing with THE DESIGNER himself was even more amazing.
Back to my dresses: I tried on all five of them — with jewelry, veil & shoes specifically chosen from Robert to match my shape and figure. Well, when my sister saw me come out she had no words. Neither did I — I was in love all over again (with my dress this time). It took us a while to decide between the five dresses, and when Robert mentioned that the first one I tried on was from his never-​seen-​before Fall 2010 collection, I choked. This one of a kind dress had never been seen before, in any galleries, any magazines, any runways. I was the first one wearing it that day. Well that was it — we shook hands (kissed on the cheek actually) and off I went confident that I had made the best decision of my life.
My mom, sister and I came back 5 months later to try on the dress again — it looked stunning. Everyone at the wedding kept telling me how beautiful I looked (I know, guests are supposed to do that) but I could tell that this was genuine :)

Even before I got engaged, I had an idea of what I wanted to wear for my wedding. I didn’t know much outside of the world of big designer gowns. When I got engaged and began thinking about my search for the perfect dress, I read reviews about Birnbaum & Bullock and thought it sounded so different from the experiences I had heard about from friends and seen on «Say Yes to the Dress» that I decided to make an appointment there. I am so glad that I did!
From the moment Robert Bullock introduced himself to me in his beautiful bridal studio, I knew I made a good decision in coming here. I was shopping with my mom, future mother in law, maid of honor, and two of my bridesmaids. They were all so impressed with the space right away!
I had such a great experience from start to finish. Robert asked me all the right questions and pulled dresses that really flattered my figure. I loved every dress that Robert put me in but when I put on «the one» I knew it, Robert knew it, and my shopping entourage knew it. Robert kept mentioning how I smiled the whole time I was in that dress. I felt like I was the only bride in the world when I was there working one-​on-​one with Robert.
I had told Robert my budget in the beginning and when I had decided on my dress and he told me that it was half of my budget, I was so happy that I was truly listened to. I think Birnbaum & Bullock is an experience every bride deserves. I would highly recommend making a stop there on your search for the perfect dress!
