I have been shopping at Stapleton’s for the past 25 years. Well, shopping may be a bit of a misnomer. Every six years or so I go in there and buy the same four pairs of Allen Edmonds shoes. I am not there to chit chat… I know what I want, and I am open to any other suggestions they have. No frills store, knowledgeable service, great prices.

I’ve probably bought 10 pairs of Alden shoes from these guys over the years. You need to realize that these guys are all about price. Period. As a matter of fact, their sign says something to the effect of «We probably have the lowest prices on Alden and Allen Edmonds in New York City.» And they probably do. They don’t make the shoes, they just sell them. The criticisms seem to focus on some issues people had with the manufacturer — in which case they should talk to the manufacturer — or the surly service — which, I agree, can be the case. It is strictly a «buy it and beat it» kind of place. While they may be surly, they are efficient. So, if you pretty much know what you want, you can get it for 15−30% less than the Alden or AE shops, Brooks Brothers or Barneys. And they’ve always been nice enough to me. If you’re there to «shop,» you’re probably in the wrong place.

There’s a separate store a few hundred feet away on Trinity Place that may be a little roomier. In any event, I just bought 3 pairs of shoes at that location(men’s shoes only, I think). The service was attentive, friendly, and no-pressure. The prices seem fair, and they’re running a second-pair-half-off sale on Rockports which I took advantage of. If you want to shop at a nearby large famous discount store where you pick your own shoes off the rack and have trouble finding a) help and b) a place to sit down to try them on, and where the selection for my needs(nice relatively conservative casual) was lousy … well, feel free. It is also true that Stapleton has a particularly nice selection of good men’s dress shoes. I have purchased those from them years ago.

Stopped in here a few times when I was in the area. Haven’t bought anything yet, but when it comes time to buy another nice pair of work shoes, this will be where I go. — Very solid selection of high quality, traditional leather dress shoes — Better prices than many of white shoe joints that sell work shoes(Brooks Brothers, Alden, etc) — Although some of the reviews suggest otherwise, these guys seem attentive. But, I haven’t bought anything, so I can’t say for sure. The handful of times I window shopped here, however, made me feel this was a place I wanted to visit again. Their business card is in my wallet until I’m ready to stop by!

Bought two pairs of shoes here in February. $ 550 total but a few months later one set(ecco’s) started tearing in the leather. I’ve had many pairs of ecco’s and I know this isn’t normal. Yesterday I decide to come talk these guys since this is where I bought them from and see what the warranty was like. What a mistake!!! First the man got very defensive when I was asking about how to get them replaced. I never said I expected them to do it and I also stopped myself from telling him I was planning on buying another set while I waited for my current set to get replaced by the manufacturer If that what needed to happen. He then proceeded to tell me that it wasn’t possible for ecco’s to have problems unless I bought the wrong size. Seriously? After he came up with that brilliant brainstorm I started to get annoyed. Basically I told him everything had the potential to wear or break sooner than expected. I just thought maybe he would have some idea as to how the warranty would work for a product he sold. At this point he came up with something even better. He compared shoes to tires on cars, saying that shoes like tires don’t come with warranties because some get used harder than others. WTF? I told Him that was a terrible analogy and in fact every tire I buy including the new ones on my new cars all have warranties. After having a good laugh at his expense I decided to give up and walked out. I would expect this service from Payless or another place that sells no name cheap products but not when you buy products in a price range that would have you expecting some kind of craftsmanship. At least with at Payless I bet they know or can find out what the warranty would be on their own products.

I bought a pair of Sperry Topside classic boat shoes for my boyfriend here and had a reat experience. I bouht a pair that was not correct size and I returned it no problem and then they didnt have the exact size I needed in stock so someone ran over to teh other store and I immediately had the right size to take home with me. The prices are definitely good too. They were very nice I would 100% recommend this store. AS a matter of a fact I came on here to see their hours because I want to get a pair of Merrel’s for my Dad and I know I saw Merrel’s in the window… I pass this palce every day on my way to work…

Poor selection, VERY rude floor staff; the attendent started heckling me to buy $ 500 worth of shoes and got really up set when I wanted time to think about it — really bad experience here.

This business has been operating here for 59 years! Great customer service, never a wait. It’s one only a handful of stores in NYC that carries high quality shoes in small sizes. I wear a 5 ½ so this place is a godsend. While the selection isn’t edgey, they have a very solid collection of high end leather shoes(think Alden, Cheaney, Johnston Murphy). If you have to wear a suit for work or you just happen to want a traditional style formal shoe, this is the place to go. Prices seemed lower than other stores I’ve been to, not rock bottom by any means, but very reasonable.
