In our retail business, we apply the same exacting standards that we have used in our traditional auction business, with a focus on sourcing excellent wines, in pristine condition and from impeccable sources.
I ordered a single bottle of Bernadotte 09, simply because I was happy to give a try to Asimov’s wine tasting class. I bought it for a good price, $ 29 and, to be perfectly honest, forgot to pick this up for a while. While I appreciated the reminders Andre Reid sent me, I was pretty unhappy to learn that my bottle was«oversold» when I decided to pick it up. Not that I think it is a bad practice –they are running a company after all, but rather because I would like to know ahead of time if a shop is going to oversell my purchase if not picked up early enough. What I got was a response that said«oversold» and«refund» without any further explanation. Then I received a second email saying that somehow, «there was an issue with our inventory, as it reports to have one bottle available, when in fact, we do not». In other words, they will never see my money again. They probably do not care but people should know how much consideration small customers are given.

Sotheby’s Wine make you wish you were a baller(and maybe a little bit taller). This is a wine store for the serious collector or international jet-setter with lots of discretionary income; definitely don’t come here looking for a dry, crisp pinot grigio. or a great dinner party wine under $ 20. All the important wine producers and negociants of Burgundy, Bordeaux, and Northern Rhone are represented here, and vintages are stacked from most recent to oldest. I literally spent an hour looking(more like gawking) at their selection of DRC, Rousseau, Leflaive, Raveneau, Roulot, and Dujac. Some Italian and Spanish wine appears(don’t worry, it’s expensive), as well as older vintages of Napa Valley, California. Delivery is free for orders greater than $ 150. If you’re concerned that your ’82 Margaux gets to your office in one piece, they have a proprietary delivery van that is temperature controlled with storage racks. Although having offices in 40 different countries across the world helps in sourcing wine, Sotheby’s has got off to an impressive start in their first year of retail operations.

Drool. I could win a million dollars and still walk out of here broke. This is the wine shopper’s equivalent of going to Dolce and Gabbana or Gucci. There are bottles for sale to drink now that are normally only found on the wine lists of five-star restaurants. If you are just flat out sick to death of being outdone by some wine blowhard brother-in-law, stop by here and spend, say $ 1500 on a Château Margaux and watch his jaw drop. There are also very very fine wines to be had here for more reasonable, but still steep, prices. This is not your everyday drinking store. But for a special occasion bottle that is truly special, this store is worth a trip. And do I have to say it, the staff are experts of a unique caliber.
