Skylight At Moynihan Station

I’ve passed by this iconic building many times on my way to the 34^th Street AMC movie theater but was never quite sure if it was more than a post office with an exterior Greek/​Roman architecture. News has it that they are converting certain areas to accommodate a new concourse for the Amtrak.
It’s also a venue space and we had the privilege to attend a free holiday light exhibition courtesy of Stella Artois in mid-​December 2015. **My review is based on my experience at their Skylight venue.** Timed tickets (by the hour) were required and open to the public on Stella’s website. The description was vague but we RSVPed a few weeks in advance.
The bouncers were extremely efficient at organizing the lines WITH a pleasant attitude. My friend was late but was able to skip the first line to join me in the second line. Eventually, the line led us through the post office’s parking garage and into the Skylight venue. The venue is on the ground floor and there is no actual skylight to my disappointment as we were told that Stella Artois was gifting us with «stars» for the holiday season. The venue itself is very bare-​boned and pretty much a clean palette for event planners. We enjoyed our 2 complimentary beers and snapped photos with the Stella logos printed on their installation walls before joining a small crowd into a dark room. THIS was the ‘Stars’ installation and it was BEAUTIFUL! Small globes of changing lights dangled before our eyes and approached our outstretched hands. A photographer was on site and took shots to upload on their website. She encouraged me to reach for the blue globes as they descend the furthest from the ceiling. Unfortunately, the installation is timed and we were ushered to another room to finish our drink tickets and snack on pretzels. Overall, it was a unique and interactive experience and I hope they do something similar next year!

A friend of mine had organized the Stella Event at the Skylight as a quick start to a birthday party. Something quick, free and different from just going to bars the entire time. When we arrived just before 5pm, there was a bit of a line. Since not all of our friends were there we waited a bit before deciding to go in and wait inside. There were at least two queues, first to get your ID checked then bag checked then body wand checked. Then another to get inside the actual event itself. The venue was a very interesting place. For this particular event, the walkway was illuminated by Stella’s iconic star. Thankfully it was not cold because the second wait was in what appeared to be a delivery bay/​garage. Once inside, they offered your first of two beers. They had many photo opportunities including a large stella logo, a red carpet set up, as well as quotes along the white walls that juxtaposed the industrial, grungy ceiling above. Our friends had a much longer wait than we did so we hung out for a bit before heading into the installation.
The room would empty every 7 minutes as groups of people went into reach for the stars. I won’t give much away for the actual piece but go in, trust that you wont fall on your face while you adjust to the low lights and reach up. Once you capture a few pictures, you are ushered out to the bar room. I loved this room. I am unsure of how different it may look in other situations but they had a nice bar set up serving stella, a small snack bar that offered popcorn, pretzels and chex mix. There were low hanging lights strung across the ceiling from wall to wall with cocktail tables and small clusters of chairs to relax on.
In the end, I am thankful for the two beers and the time i spent with friends but I am unsure if i would go to this event again. The venue was very interesting and it would be interesting to see what else they can do with it.
