History

Established in 2009.

The story behind Sidewalks of NY Tours began a decade ago, when it’s founder, J.D. Hirsch started taking friends and family on walking tours of the city he loves. His biggest motivation was to make sure his guests experienced The TRUE New York.

Through years of exploration, he had discovered the secret hideaways, and hidden gems that make New York unlike any other city in the world. He combed the streets, tasting authentic ethnic cuisines and culinary delights not found in any guide books. His lengthy walking adventures took him to dinky mom-​and-​pop specialty food shops, and ethnic eateries, which have stood the test of time. He began compiling a best of list in search of the best delicatessens, bagel and knish shops, coffee houses, bakeries, candy stores, hamburger joints, pizzerias, and so much more.

A friend noticed J.D.‘s passion and enthusiasm showing people his discoveries, and suggested he start a walking tour business. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Did the LES tour with Brian and had a great time. We live locally and had family in from out of town. Was afraid that it would be a bit «touristy» but it was informative and we tried restaurants that were «on our list» but hadn’t gotten to yet. Brian did a great job engaging the group and intertwining the history of the neighborhood along with the influence of the foods. Highly recommend for both locals and tourists.

Great combo of LES food & history!
It was a perfect 3 hours of walking through the area learning about and eating all the classic food of the area (knish, Katz’ Deli, Chinatown dumplings, amazing pickles (and I don’t even like pickles), cake doughnuts, etc.). Our guide Ian was super friendly and and informative. I learned a lot more than expected and enjoyed all the great eats. Highly recommend!

This tour was better than expected. Dante was informative and friendly and funny. I’ve taken a few walking tours on which the tour guide seemed rehearsed or forced and cheesy. Dante was laid back and funny and informative all at the same time.
We took the Lower East side tour and it was nearly too much food. Definitely go hungry!

Really loved having Jim as our tour guide. He was informative while keeping it all lively and engaging; genuinely caring about the tour he was giving. He gave a great historical account of the area, keeping us listening with his true New Yorker bravado. Living in New York myself, I learned stuff I didn’t know. There were enough breaks and as action packed as it was, it was in a way, relaxing. Probably one of the best guides I’ve ever had.

Dante did a fantastic job with our group. He was knowledgeable and attentive. Laid back as well. We did the lower East Side tour and hit 8 different spots. Each stop had great food and we where in and out quickly. A great way to find spots that tourist might not know about.

I participated in the food truck tour yesterday and was not disappointed. There was sooooo much food and everything was awesome! Dante was extremely accommodating and patient with my food preferences. I am a very picky eater and he made sure there was something for me to enjoy at each stop. He was very engaging and answered everyone’s questions.

We took the west village tour. Dante, our tour guide was really great. You could tell he had been giving tours for a while now. So comfortable and easily answered all out questions. Also he didn’t partake in all of the tastings. If I gave this tour multiple times every week, I would probably get sick of some of the food also. Anyways we met up at the designated meeting spot and was handed a bottle of water. It was a bit warm that day and we walked around quite a bit. There was an older person in the group and I think she was ok with the walking but did sit and rest at all the stops. I would say 2 of the spots were sit down places and for the other 4, we just stood outside the place. We tried falafels, sausage, arancinis, fatty bacon, everything bagel, artichoke pizza and a cannoli. I think my favorite was the bacon. That place was also a bar so you could partake in some libations also. At the end of the tour, I was really full. My favorite part of the tour was when we got to see the Friends (tv show) building. The tour had a good mix of history of the city and landmarks as well as the food. And at the end, Dante made some suggestions of what to do next and gave us directions or recommendations as needed. Great tour and we also bought the tickets through Gilt, so it was also a wonderful tour.

This is my second tour with Sidewalks of NY tour.
This tour was the West Village Food Tour with Dante. Dante was a great tour guide. He was able to tell me about NYC that I did not know about. The food we tried was good.
We stopped at 6 places — Mamuou’s Falafel, Faicco’s Italian Specialties, Molly’s Cupcakes, Hudson Bagels, Artichoke Pizza and Paticceria Bruno
The food was good.
I would take another tour with this company.

Local or tourist, you must do the food truck tour with Sidewalks of NY Tours. Josh was an amazing guide and really knows a lot about the food trucks and NYC in general. We took the Saturday tour, which started in midtown and ended in Soho. We went to two food karts and three food trucks. We did not leave hungry, portions were good at all the stops! I highly recommend doing this or one of the other food tours. What better way to learn NYC than by the food it offers?
We loved the stop at Biryani Cart and Wafels and Dinges and they were our favorites from our tour. We also stopped at Kwik Meal, Tribecca Taco Truck and Nuchas empanadas. All were really good!

Last weekend, I took the Sidewalks of New York: West Village Foodie Tasting Tour. I’ve been on several walking tours from Chinatown to Harlem with a variety of tour companies and this was definitely one of the more enjoyable (and tastier) ones.
Our tour guide, Dante, was personable, energetic and very knowledgeable about the area. This tour had a good mix of historical and cultural facts about the neighborhood (both that of revolutionary New York when Greenwich was farmland to it’s role as little bohemia and as a Mecca for artists over the years). Dante shared this all in a very accessible and humorous fashion!
Our group had a good mix of out of towners and locals (I’m a recent transplant to the city) and this is commonplace with this tour. If you are one of the two, you won’t feel out of place at all.
The highlight of this tour was, of course, the food. We walked through different areas of Greenwich and the West Village from Sixth Avenue to Eighth Avenue, sampling different cuisines as we went. Some of my favorites were: the falafel at Mamoun’s, bacon at Fatty ‘Cue and the tacos at Choza Taqueria. This selection of tastings was wide, showcasing the diversity of the cuisine in not only New York, but also the Village.
While there are seven tastings in all and all in various corners of Greenwich Village, there was ample time between each and two points at which we were able to sit down for a more leisurely dining experience. They were perfect bites as we walked and I was pleasantly full by the end!
I’ve been to the West Village many times since moving here (it’s one of my favorite neighborhoods) and we still walked down streets and past landmarks that I’ve never seen before.
If you’re in the NYC area, I would highly recommend this tour in particular from Sidewalks of NY.

afew weeks agomy girlfriend and I went on the Food Truck tour with Josh as our guide. We both enjoyed immensely; the food tastings were all superb, and Josh is extremely knowledgeable and personable. Josh was also extremely accommodating in changing the tour date to mesh well with our NYC visit. We highly recommend this tour for everyone! Thank you so kindly, Josh. What a great way to take in the sights, tastes and history of New York!
I booked the Lower East Side tour because I’d get to tick off a number of my «must eats» that were on my list. Traveling solo isn’t necessarily conducive to getting to try lots of foods (without wasting a lot or eating far too much), so a tour is a great way to go as you get to share bigger portions with a number of people. Funnily enough I ended up being the only person on my tour and so had to exercise some self restraint along the way.
I found Josh to be super personable and it was lovely to speak to him about the different stores and the culture surrounding certain foods. He certainly has a great inside knowledge of the area and it’s good to see his relationships with store owners, who are appreciative of the business that he brings to them each day.
I would absolutely recommend any of the tours offered by Sidewalks of NY if you’re short of time and want to explore (and eat!) as much as you can in just a few hours. Great value and a fun way to spend a morning or afternoon

DONTE! He made this tour a memorable one! I can not say enough about this tour! What could be better than Pizza and Beer? Good friends and Donte that’s what could be better! I urge you to try the new Pizza and Beer tour! Donte was a fantastic tour guide! This tour was heads above the rest! Not only do you eat and drink along the way, but you also get the history behind Greenwich Village! From Hendricks and Dylan, to poets and tv sets! He will even take your picture on the front steps of the Sex In The City house! I would actually do this tour again! Loved every single minute of it! It was the highlight of our NYC trip! He even let our own tour guide… Billy…feel like he was doing part of the guiding himself! If I could give this 6 stars I would! You must do this tour! And tell Donte that Billy sent ya!

Mike was our tour guide for our Lower East Side Eats walking tour this weekend. He was awesome — everything you could ask for in a tour guide. He was knowledgeable, sweet, enthusiastic — just wonderful. He also handled the couple of pain-​in-​the-​ass people in our group like a pro, accommodating requests seamlessly.
I bought a couple of vouchers through
, so we were there for about $ 25 each. The cost would have been worth it at the full price ($ 48 each), but was rockin’ at half price. The website tells you that the food will probably be enough for lunch — well, we were stuffed. Completely stuffed.
Even for native New Yorkers, this is a fabulous way to try a bunch of stuff without committing to paying a big price before sampling the goods. We’re looking forward to trying another tour!
Side note: it’s a lot of walking, so be prepared.

Review for Mid-​Town Food Cart Tour Thur. June 14th
My wife, daughter and I were fortunate enough on this day, to be the only attendees on this food cart tour. So we’ were able to receive the Private VIP tour from Josh. He was very professional, friendly, knowledgable and very easy to talk too… kind of like talking with an old friend. He was so thoughtful, he even brought paper plates, napkins, forks, foil and whatever else could fit in his messenger bag. With so many food carts & trucks abound on the streets of NYC, Josh provided us the «insider» knowledge on the inner workings and the stories behind each food stop… and yes delicious food tasting along the way.
The food stops that were made on this day were:
1. Crisp on Wheels — Vegetarian Falafel
2. Big D’s Grub Truck — Bulgogi Taco (Marinated Beef on a Soft Tortilla)
3. Biryani Cart — Kati Roll
4. Kwik Meal Cart — Chicken & Rice
5. Wafels & Dinges — Liege Wafel with spekuloos spread & whipped cream
As we told Josh along the way, we may not have had the courage to try the Indian or Middle Eastern carts, such as Biryani Cart. But by taking this tour, it enabled us to try a Kati Roll, which was absolutely delicious. The pace of the tour was at a casual pace, so you really never feel rushed… just enough time to digest the food and get excited for the next stop.
Our personal favorite had to be the Wafels & Dinges Truck. We read and saw all the hype on the Food Network and believe us, this truck lives up to all its hype and deserves all the accolades it receives. The Liege Wafel that Josh provided us on the tour was so delicious that we bought two jars of the Spekuloos Spread and I even had enough room to order a «de bacon + maple syrup» wafel… as it says on the menu board: «Scandalous and pretty much illegal in Belgium’, Awesome in NYC… and they are correct.
To sum it up, this food cart tour was definitely worth it and we highly recommend it to any fooder out there… Be Adventurous! Mahalo and A Hui Hou (Thank You and Take Care), Josh!

The tour was very informative as well as interesting. Our guide, Josh, was great. He was professional, friendly, knowledgeable and courteous. The food was good, my faves were the Biryani cart, Kwik meal and Coolhaus. The next time I have out of towners, I’ll be planning another food cart tour!

We bought a 2 for 1 deal from Bloomspot for our honeymoon.
It was awesome. We did the Midtown tour on 10⁄13 and tried Qwik meal, Biryani, Big D’s Grub truck, Bapcha, and Wafels & Dinges. All were great.
Josh was a great guide, informative, warm, and willing to answer any question that was thrown at him.
I’d love to go back to NYC and take the other 2 food truck tours they offer.
