Specialties

Scandinavian Design, Inc. importers of classic furniture and lighting from Scandinavia since 1955. We started with the designs by Bruno Mathsson and have through the years added designers. We represent a selection of manufacturers from Sweden, Finland and Denmark.

History

Established in 1955.

In 1955, Hans Lindblom, an architect from Stockholm was asked by his friend, Bruno Mathsson, to open a showroom in New York offering his furniture designs.

On his following trip back to Sweden, Mr. Lindblom purchased all Mathsson designs being made at the time, and brought them back with him to New York on the ship: «Queen Elizabeth.»

He opened a showroom with his wife Celia at 20 East 58th Street and called it «Bruno Mathsson Furniture.» After several years, they added furniture designed by Alvar Aalto, Arne Jacobsen, Hans J. Wegner etc. and the company name was changed to Scandinavian Design, Inc.

Today our total representation includes more than 50 furniture and lighting designers from 28 manufacturers in Sweden, Denmark and Finland. The period represented is the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s when contemporary classics where created, as well as brand new design.

Working closely with the manufacturers, our company has through the years gained a thorough knowledge of the construction
