Salvation Army Family Store

I visited this location on Dec 11, 2015.
I have worked in the hospitality industry for 15 years. The reason I chose to work in guest service is because I am passionate about giving great service. A first impression last forever.
The young woman who is the Manager is unpleasant and clearly miserable. I dislike nasty negative people who hold jobs in customer service. She lacks the ability to properly engage with a person. Her title at this store is store Manager. WTF serious?
She was so nasty that I had to sage myself when I got home. LOL

I live in the nabe of Fourth and 11^th, so I often swing by this particular Sally Vay. Always find a goody. However today, I went in. To my surprise, ear-​splitting music was blasting from a CD player behind the counter. An employee I did not recognize from previous visits was at the register. When the song ended she actually turned the music back on… louder than before — so loud, I had to bellow when I went to pay for my items, «How much? Sorry, can’t hear you!!» I shrieked, gesturing to that roaring CD. She never even blinked. What was her problem? Don’t care. Next time I look in and see HER behind the counter, gonna pass ‘em by. I should have simply left the store, refusing to buy, behind all that cacaphony. But I really wanted the books for my niece, and up till then. I’ve always liked the store a lot. That said — somebody needs to tell this woman to get her hearing checked. And maybe brush up her social skills?

Tried donating via their pick-​up service, which I thought would be great since I have a really busy schedule but also want to relieve some storage space.
So I scheduled a pick up, and the closest thing they had was 2 weeks later, then the time finally rolled around and they suggested to check the pick-​up time online the morning of the day. So I did, it gave me a window of 11:30AM-2:30PM. I thought, oh good, I can make it back home in time to give them the stuff so I don’t have to leave it with the doorman.
The driver came at 10:00AM. 1 and a half hours before the scheduled window time… and called me during my 100-​person lecture class.
If they are not going to follow the time frame, then just don’t provide one. So my much-​looked-​forward-​to scheduled donation pick-​up was just cancelled, because they decided to not follow their proposed schedule. I am so frustrated, guess I need to drag the heavy bag of clothing to this store now.

This place has given me two of my best finds: A Land’s End down coat for $ 19.95 and another really nice and cheap coat. The place is dull and narrow, but it’s worth perusing for real finds at rock-​bottom prices. As a result, I always donate my nicest stuff to them. They will give you a receipt for whatever you claim the value is. Don’t be discouraged by the ugly space. Keep searching!

Compared to the Astoria Salvation Army branch, this place is super cramped and dirty. The selection is okay, although you really have to search fast before what you want is grabbed someone else. The prices are also okay, considering the fact that this is on pretty expensive real estate in Union Square. The experience of shopping here though, from the dusty blowing fans, the broken up floor, small and dirty mirrors, and people constantly pushing past you in small aisles is just not that great. Come here if you have no other Salvation Army branches near you and want cheap (business casual or not) clothing.

What is someone’s trash is another person’s treasure.
After being rejected by Strand Bookstore for having no re-​sale value of my books, they suggested Salvation Army Thrift Store. Without an evaluation interrogation and without question I donated three books and became care-​free from the burden of storage space. Here lies my ultimate donation source for all unwanted materials and select objects. I did not browse through the clothing section, as agreed with other Unilocalers, many appeared in dilapidated conditions thus not worth purchasing. The clothing aisle is indeed very narrow and the interior of this thrift shop is very dated 1950s era and dilapidated with the passage of time. I wish there was a place to dispose unwanted bad memories of MEN!

I constantly go to this thrift store. It’s close to union and the prices are fair especially when you can get an additional discount on certain days depending on the tags. It’s hard to find clothes here that are in good shape, but there are times you do find something. Aisles are indeed VERY narrow and long, but I am use to it and people who come here a lot know the deal as well. I love the selection of books, and coffee mugs. The basement is usually where I go to first since I know I can take a quick scan then prepare to go back upstairs to go through stuff. And they take cash/​debit cards.

I didn’t even know this SA was here… or maybe I did but forgot… either way it’s not much to write home about… I gave it 2 stars and here’s why:
Pros:
–Near Union Square, so you can pop in on the regular to do a quick scan
–Lots of H&M and Forever 21
–Accepts CCards (even Amex!)
Cons:
–Very small space with a limited, sub-​par selection
–SCARY BASEMENT! A rusty metal staircase leads down from the sidewalk into a puddle
–Over-​priced! I purchased 2 fairly cute H&M sweaters for a total of $ 16.99, not far from what I could have gotten them for on sale and *NEW* at the actual store.

It’s a thrift store. Be ready to sift though a whole bunch of stuff for a long time. Come PREPARED to THRIFT.
This store is the epitome of that.
The aisle are long and narrow. Very awkward. Often people are squeezing in and out. And it’s very HIT or MISS here.
It’s a SA. So, come on what were you expecting? If you head over to Cure a block over. It’s the same shit but marked up 50 percent up.

This salvation army is not a destination shopping spot for me, but I do stop by when I’m in the neighborhood.
Best finds here for me have been trendy business wear. Blazers, cute skirts, pants.
They have a big coat section with some nice picks.
My best find to date here was a Pierre Cardin tan breifcase-​y thing. this baby goes on all job interviews.
as others have said, it is narrow, but it’s never bothered me anymore than any other narrow store or restaurant in new york city. i do have that i-​NEED-​to-​wash-​my-​hands-​NOW feeling when I leave… but I get that at most thrift stores. I dont find this store to be particularly grimy at all.

The staff was really sweet, and there was so much to look at. If you take your time, you can find some great things but you have to be patient. I came out with a couple great things, but I don’t know if it is going to be one of my regular haunts.

Okay. Let me start.
This place is awkwardly long. Like… a narrow store but long. It’s weird and uncomfortable to walk down aisles.
As you walk in, it has that used clothes smell. I mean. Okay. It’s a thrift store. I get it. But others don’t smell like that. How used are these clothes?!
I tried going through the jeans several times, but it’s just… hard. I have to go one by one. Also, is there a changing room in there? I’ve never seen one, except a few mirrors. But if I want to try on pants… I guess I’ll wear a skirt and pull a discreet move.
Overall my experience is meh. And yet I keep going back every time I’m around, still searching for that one gem. I have never bought from that store in the 4 times I’ve been there. This doesn’t look good.

Terrible selection, terrible smell, terrible staff, there is no salvation for this army.
thrift stores blow in nyc.

I was pleasantly surprised by what I found here in terms of men’s clothing, as the men’s section is usually pitifully small in most thrift stores that I’ve been to. Not only was the selection pretty large, but I also found a lot of great higher-​end brands that I’d expect more to find in consignment shops, and not necessarily in a thrift store (Ralph Lauren Purple Label, Paul Smith, Zegna, YSL, as well as numerous store brands from Nordstrom and a few from Bergdorf). Men’s shoe section was decent as well, although a bit overpriced for the level of wear on most of the shoes (again, good brands though – I spotted Ferragamo, Cole Haan, and one pair of Pradas)
Negatives? As others have mentioned, the store is awkwardly long and narrow, which can make navigating the aisles tricky when it’s busier. There was also a lot of worn/​stained clothing in addition to the good finds. Furniture in the downstairs area seemed pretty overpriced, and the whole place smelled a little funky.
Like any other thrift store, you’ve got to be prepared to search through the junk to find the good stuff. Definitely better than the one in Chelsea.

This is probably one of the worst Salvation Army thrift stores I’ve been to, sorry. There are a ton of clothes here, but most of them seem pretty worn and ratty. Someone else also mentioned that the store is long rather than wide, and it’s true. It makes going down the aisles very difficult. Every time I was inspecting something in the racks, some customer would come towards my way to get to the other side, and I would ALWAYS have to squeeze myself against the rack, or just walk to the end of the aisle, wait for the customer to walk by, and then go back to where I was.
There are a few mirrors posted around the store, but they were kind of dirty, so I couldn’t get a very good look on how the clothes looked on me.
Prices seemed okay. Ranging from 0.99 — 24.99 or so for the clothes alone. Every Wednesday they are doing 50% off clothes, books, except for the newest items. Unfortunately all the items I wanted were the newest items, but oh well. Brands I saw a lot of: Grace Elements, Express, Ann Taylor, Gap, etc. If you dig around, I’m sure you’ll find some gems: I found a cute American Apparel cardigan for $ 4.99 (it was a little worn down, so I didn’t get it), a 2pc Theory blazer and pants set for $ 19.99 (size 6 blazer, size 4 pants), and a striped BCBG Maxazria 2pc set for $ 24.99
They keep the «really nice» items locked up at the front. I did spot a pair of Jimmy Choo silver flat in the display.
I would say that a good 95% of the clothes are pretty worn, a lot of them stained, unfortunately. I didn’t have the patience to keep on moving for people moving down the aisle. Luckily, I found The Subtle Knife for $ 1.99, so I didn’t leave the store empty-​handed.

The selection left much to be desired. It was disorganized and messy. I also went to the one on 8^th Ave. around 21^st St. and felt like that one had a much larger selection of clothing and seemed to be much better organized.

not up to par, look at the pricing of the furniture in the basement and you know this one is charging too much.

The staff is super friendly and god knows what you’ll find in the racks. I find most of my Prada here. Just dig and you’ll pull out a gem

This Salvation Army is decent. The layout of the store is annoying, however, because it is long instead of wide, so it is hard to get around the isles. They have a lot of clothes and an ok book selection.
