Proper Suit

I’m getting married in July and an old friend recommended Proper Suit to me. I decided it was time to splurge and get a custom suit. Co-​founder, Richard Hall, did the measurements and went over adjustments once the suit arrived. He is very detail oriented and answered all of my questions. We even looked at a suit I already own for comparison. He showed me what fit well and what didn’t. I appreciated his candor and that he never tried to upsell.
I’m very excited about my new suit and I can’t wait to wear it at my wedding and for future Broadway opening nights! I know my fiancée will be happy very happy with it too!

I have been using ProperSuit for many years now. The NYC studio off of Park Ave. is fantastic and in a great, convenient location. Richard Hall spends time with you and is a perfectionist when it comes getting your pattern right. The quality and service is outstanding. Everything is customized and I get complements on my suits all the time. I’m looking to order a tuxedo next.
I would highly recommend ProperSuit to anyone who is looking for a perfect fitting suit.

This review is long overdue. This was my first experience with Proper Suit and I can’t say enough great things about them and their team. The initial fitting was expertly done by Melissa. She talked me through all the fabric options, customizations, patiently answered all my questions and about hour and half later she had a pretty decent template to work with. Out of the box the tuxedo did need a few minor adjustments so I emailed Proper Suit to see if they could make the alterations. After two in store refitting sessions done by Richard at the Flatiron shop I had a truly bespoke tuxedo for my wedding. He took in the jacket at waist, slimmed the pant legs and minimized the break, giving the tuxedo a more refined and tailored look. I was very impressed at his impeccable attention to detail, his flexible work schedule but more importantly his desire to have me look my best for the my wedding. Overall the experience with Proper Suit has been outstanding. Their customer service was exceptional and their attention to detail during the fitting process gave me confidence in knowing that I was going to get an expertly crafted, perfectly tailored garment. I’m getting married and I was having a hard time finding a decent suit off the rack, so after a little online research I decided to try Proper Suit. The appointment process was painless, and Richard was extremely helpful during my hour-​long fitting. I tried on a few different samples before finding the fabric and cut that I had been looking for, but hadn’t known I had been looking for (always a good feeling).
I just had my 2^nd fitting several days ago, and Richard did so well with the measurements that the suit barely needs any alterations at all — just a little hemming on the pants. And the turnaround was very reasonable for a custom suit (less than a month).
Highly recommended — looking forward to wearing this suit at my wedding.

The Proper Suit process, fabric selection, tailoring, and price are astounding. I routinely get compliments on the suits I’ve purchased from them and when I tell people that the suits were all done from a single measurement on one of their DC visits they are incredulous. I was fitted for my first Proper Suit by McGregor on one of his trips to Washington. I was a little anxious about purchasing a suit off one fitting, but McGregor explained the full process and what could be done if adjustments were needed. The suit arrived 6 weeks later, and to my surprise, was a perfect fit! I wore it to work the next day and I had at least six separate comments on how great it looked. I purchased a second suit when my daughter was getting ready to get married. It was about a year later, and we had moved to Albuquerque, NM, so there was no opportunity to personally go in for another fitting. I should not have been concerned at all. I called the number at the site and got Kiyoshi (the Chicago office). He used the measurements from the first fitting and walked me through construction of the second suit. It arrived about a month later and i fit me as well as the first… no additional alterations required. Tons of compliments at the wedding. Getting ready to order a third suit now… Proper Suit is the best!

Came here with my boyfriend to get 2 custom suits for him since he has an athletic build and we could not find anything that fit him well that was OTR at Saks and Bergdorf Goodman. Richard at the Flatiron location was super helpful and catered to his needs from beginning to end: 1 hour initial fitting which consists of measurements, fabric selection, customization of suit, you name it. I didn’t realize that the location of the button stance was so important as that needed to be adjusted to the narrowest part of your torso to get the right fit. Both suits came out wonderfully and I could not believe how good he looked. My boyfriend will certainly be back for another suit!!!

I couldn’t be more pleased with both the experience of working with Proper Suit, as well as the finished product. Melissa the fit specialist was excellent to work with: knowledgeable, intuitive, and personable. She really worked with me to understand the fit I was looking for and she nailed it the first time around. The suit arrived and fit perfectly, with only a couple minor alterations needed. I was so happy with the experience that I ordered a second suit. Highly recommended!

I placed an order yesterday for my third suit (I also have an additional pair of trousers) from PROPERSUITS’s New York studio on E. 20^th Street in Manhattan. No one reading this review really needs to know anything more.
That said, I think a larger story deserves telling. Over the past year I have worked with Melissa Watson, Kiyoshi Martinez, and Richard Hall — a principal in the company as they fitted me, helped me design suits, and generally helped me dress for my life.
I experienced bumps along way. The first suit went awry. But PROPERSUIT stepped up, did the right thing, and I ended up with a great suit. It cost them money to do that. They never complained, they just focused and did what they had to do to deliver the best possible and best possible fitting garment that the could.
I admire the way this company does business.
I admire the vision of what they want to bring to their customers in the future (even better fitting suits, better materials, shirts, shoes, ties).
PROPERSUIT cares about the clothes. Not just the outward appearance, but the hidden details that speak to the art of fine tailoring.
I don’t know if the technology and systems and management of their thoroughly modern global operation (material from Italy, fitting in the US, manufacture in Asia) will ever surpass a full bespoke suit, but I believe this company dreams of achieving just that.
I look forward to receiving my new PROPERSUIT and following what this very interesting group of imaginative and dedicated people do to develop their business and transform the clothes available to us.

This place is top of the line. The experience, overall start to finish process, and end product were simply outstanding. Most of the time, I find it very hard to find clothing that will fit me properly as I am 6“8 and 235 lbs. McGregor and his staff are simply the best in the business when it comes to building a customized suit. Not only does the suit fit perfectly, but I always receive compliments from colleagues, friends, and family. And, oh, I usually get a fun «You look so nice in that suit!» from my female friends.
Proper Suit is by far the best place to go if you are looking for something that will make you look fresh and feel great. Sometimes I wish that I never had been introduced to Proper Suit because I want to buy a new suit almost every other month.
Simply outstanding product and business.

I am not a regular suit wearer — I don’t particularly care for them. However, I was getting married this past fall, and I figured it was time to get a suit I liked and that fit properly. I had a great experience with Proper Suit. I got to ask a lot of dumb questions and Melissa patiently answered them all. The suit looks great, it’s comfortable, and the whole process was far less stressful than I’d imagined it would be.

I have worked with a variety of the online (ish — the lines are blurring back and forth now) M2M groups (Indochino, Blacklapel, Raja Fashions, etc.), and have certainly seen the highest level of craftsmanship and also the most superb customer service from Proper Suit. While it has at times been difficult logistically being based in Washington, D.C., where the firm offers fittings on a travel basis but has no physical presence, I have worked with Lance in Portland, OR, as well as both McGregor Madden and Richard Hall, the cofounders, on trips they have made to D.C.
Because there is no physical presence here, fitting was tricky. Unlike other M2M groups, there is no online fitting process. This is less convenient but creates a better final outcome, as it approaches true bespoke tailoring. I got an initial fitting done in D.C. but decided not to purchase at that time. Proper Suit worked with me to apply my fitting fee to a suit far in the future, despite the unusual nature of the request. Subsequently, I was refitting in Portland, OR, while traveling there for personal reasons. The suit I received is of gorgeous fabric for the price (not the very top of the line, but not the bottom either) and the customization options allow me to match the needs of my frame, create something unique and fashion conscious, and still be within the bounds of normal wear that won’t stick out at work.
There were some fit issues subsequent to my PDX fitting. Fortunately, Richard Hall came to D.C. and was willing to remake my suit free of charge. I don’t see this as casting aspersions on the fitting in PDX. My body type is such that I think no one could’ve gotten it 100% the first time until they saw the garment on me. The next fit was superb, with the jacket spot on. Nevertheless, a perfectionist, I thought that the pants were slightly too short — giving me a «grown out of the pants look» that was too much of a sacrifice to minimize the break. A company less attuned to customer service or a more easily ruffled individual than Richard might’ve decried my request to look at the pants (which cannot be lengthened easily later on by a tailor since they are finished, as a tip) as too perfectionistic and pointed out that I did want to minimize the break in the first place. Instead, Richard saw me again, we made some quick adjustments, and he determined how best to get me a pair of paints according to what I wanted. I will definitely order from Proper Suit again in the future for suiting needs as well as outerwear. While I definitely think the focus on quality and delivery in the suiting and outerwear worlds is superb rather than rapid expansion other M2M companies have charted (into all menswear, essentially), I would certainly also love to see shirts and even other clothes included in the future, as the team has demonstrated excellent quality in Hall&Madden, their shirting company, if not a M2M fit. I would hate to see quality decline in service of expanding the product line, but I think a slow, steady expansion into these realms could be very fruitful.
Two last wishes:
1. Open a brick and mortar D.C. shop!
2. Work with suppliers to allow for the hem of pants to be different in the back and front — this is something any local tailor could do with relative ease, but doesn’t appear to be currently possible. I completely understand that because I know something about the way the business is run, but it would be lovely to have.

I’ve bought plenty of off-​the-​rack suits and I’ve always been frustrated trying to get just the right combination of fit, fabric, color and styling. Proper Suit offers a range of made-​to-​measure options for ordering exactly what you want. As noted in other reviews, their suits are very high quality and you can choose from a range of fabrics. Melissa at the Flatiron location has excellent taste and will patiently walk you through the entire process and help you choose all the details from overall styling to the last button. My fitting and delivery were seamless. Upon delivery my suit fit very well but the jacket and pants did need some minor adjustments which Melissa took care of quickly with no questions asked. I was very pleased with the quality of the workmanship, the fabric, and the customer service. If you’re tired of off-​the-​rack and considering a high quality made-​to-​measure suit, Proper Suit is definitely worth checking out.

Don’t bother wasting your time or money with other m2m services, I have tried quite a few of them and mostly they are disappointing. Propersuit makes extremely high quality garments and their service is impeccable. If something isn’t right they will correct it without any questions asked. All their suits are fully canvassed and for the price you pay there is no real competition. Their fabric sourcing is also very good, needless to say they cover all the classic patterns and have a fair selection of other fabrics. I exclusively get all my suits here.

I’ve had the first half of the suit buying experience with Propersuit, the fitting. It went very well. Very easy to schedule an appointment (which lasted an hour). Met with Melissa, who fitted me. She took the time to explain all the measurements she was taking, the difference between fabrics, all the details I had to choose. They are also doing a rush job for me, which is doubly appreciated.

Where to even start? This suit is my favorite thing that I own. If you get a custom suit you should get it from proper suit.
There are a ton of custom suit companies looking to measure you up in nyc. Black lapel, indochino, and a bunch of other start-​ups promising a fit specialist will get you something close to bespoke for about 500 bucks. Proper Suit is 850 and you gotta pony up 150 of that just to make the appointment.
That sounds like a rip but it’s actually a better deal over all Here’s why:
1. TAX INCLUDED!!!
That 850 dollar price point includes sales tax. Sales tax on clothes in nyc will kill you. Specifically any article of clothing that costs less than 110 dollars in nyc is subject to a 4.5% sales tax. More than 110 dollars? That sales tax nearly doubles to 8.875%. For example a 549 dollar suit from black lapel (which is easily one of the best most affordable mtm companies in ny) seems more affordable but with sales tax gets bumped up to 597.72. That’s only if you got a bare bones suit that is. Little customizations drive the price up even more which brings me to my next point.
2. FREE CUSTOMIZATIONS!

Other companies charge more for little extras like going double breasted or getting a partial lining. In fact that suit from black lapel we were talking about jumps in price again if you select these options from a base 549 to 684.82. That doesn’t include a full canvass btw.
3. FULL CANVASSING IS INCLUDED!
What’s a full canvas? Google it. Other people have written great articles about it and why it’s important. Aside from the fact that a jacket with out a full canvas will eventually expire, jackets that do have one hang better from you and conform to your body, making you look like a bamf and not like a bum in a cheap bubbly suit. On our hypothetical black lapel suit this bumps the price up another 200 bucks, bringing that «more affordable suit» up to 902.57.
4. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS GREAT!
Melissa who works there is super nice and. She gave me exactly what I asked for and didn’t push anything I was uncomfortable with like trendier shorter jacket lengths or super slim lapels. The suit came out perfect and didn’t need any alterations. Ultimately I decided I wanted slightly shorter sleeves and they not only covered it but set me up with a great tailor who is now making my other cheaper suits look nearly as awesome as my proper suit. Oh! the suit I almost forgot.
5. THIS SUIT FITS ME PERFECTLY!
I’m not a tall handsome dude but Im not a total Devito either and this suit makes me look like a million bucks. People think I’ve lost weight when I’m wearing it. What else am I supposed to write here? DO IT!
TL:DR Proper Suit will make you exactly what you want down to the last detail. I feel like god damn James Bond in this thing and I want another one.

These guys are very impressive. I wear suits for work and pleasure, and care a lot about detail. I needed a suit to double for my wedding and work, and I found them online and decided to give it a shot. Working with Melissa, the fit specialist in the New York office, was far and above the best customer service experience I’ve had in getting clothes made. She had great taste, helped me find a fabric based on a few grainy pictures I had and a vague idea in my head, and throughout the entire process gave gentle guidance and helpful ideas on customizing the various bits and pieces to make an absolutely stunning product. The suit arrived and I was bowled over — the fabric, all of the flawlessly executed details (one buttonhole on the cuff with a tastefully chosen thread color slightly different than the others, the choice of patterned fabric for the inside pocket lining), and the gorgeous way it hangs on my body all left me speechless. Recommended in the highest possible terms. The difference between this and an off-​the-​rack suit, even higher-​end stuff, is hard to overstate. You’ll be exceedingly glad you bought this suit. I’ll certainly be back for round 2 soon.

My brother needs to wear a suit everyday for work and is always looking for new additions to his line up. As usual, he rallied me to help him find another place to find a well-​fitting, top quality suit. I took him to proper suit as per my guy friends recommendation. All he had to do was book a fitting with a $ 150 deposit and they spent the whole time working to get the best result. Melissa, the fit specialist was such a professional and the end result is his FAVORITE suit that he now owns. He has more on the way!

Best custom fit suits I have ever had. Over the past year, I have replaced all my suits with proper ones. They are the first suits I actually felt comfortable in and could move around freely. The fabrics are awesome. The staff is great with suggestions and making sure customers are happy.

I recently sent a select few of my best clients to ProperSuit as a thank you for doing business. I’ve never had clients so impressed and pleased with the type of personal and detail-​oriented service they had received during their fittings. This is definitely a great option if you’re looking to do something a little more unique for male clients going into the holiday.
