Established in 1985.

Portofino has been NYC’s leader in tanning for over 25 years. We opened our UWS location on West 73 St., in 1985. We look forward to bringing sunshine to our fellow New Yorkers for many years to come.

I love this spot. Great package deals. Great spray tans… friendly staff. I have a favorite I must admit. Kadie is the BOMB at spray tanning. I highly recommend her. And tip the woman!!! Spray tans are just the same as hair, nail, and waxing services … Appreciate! Only complaint is they could clean the spray room up a bit.

The employees here are anti-​customer. Last Sunday the guy behind the desk gabbed on a personal call using the shop’s phone for about 20 minutes while another customer and I waited to be helped. At 6:35, he puts the phone on his shoulder and asks if we are waiting for something because the shop closes at 7 and the last appointment is at 6:30. No apologies, no nothing. It’s like they don’t want customers. I definitely won’t renew at this place again when my credits are up.

RUDE, UNPROFESSIONAL AND NOT APPRECIATIVE OF BUSINESS. I had an event last week and booked a spray tan. When I arrived 5 minutes before the time of my appointment the woman who was working said they were closing and said it was my fault because I made the appointment at the wrong location. I showed her my phone which had their number in my placed calls and explained that I had an event the next day and asked if there was anything she could do to help me. I was a loyal customer and regularly get spray tans at their salon in the summer. She was extremely rude and continued to blame me, saying I was no where in there book. Finally, she took my name and said she would have a manager call me. 4 days later I never received a call. I called them this morning and the manager says that she called me TWICE, but was unable to reach me. Of course I have no missed calls. I asked why she didn’t leave a voicemail and she said it just rang and rang. She was also rude and said they are very busy because they are the only salon on the UWS and she is dealing with hundreds of complaints. Not sure why this was relevant but it certainly isn’t surprising. Stay away from this salon. In NYC there are plenty of other options who are professional and treat their clients with respect and courtesy. Even though they are 3 blocks from my apt I will NEVER return.

Worst service I have ever experienced. Told me I had an airbrush on file when I called in advance, and when I came in they then told me it was expired and I’d need to buy a new package. Shady bait and switch. On top of that the appointments were running 30 – 45 minutes behind with no explanation. I will not being going back.

This is the WORST tanning salon I’ve ever been to: I used to go to BEACH BUM but they unfortunately closed their 76th street location and offered to transfer my membership to PORTOFINO. There is always a wait, the place is tiny but more importantly, their equipment is poor.
I did a lay down and got zero color and the next time, they suggested a stand-​up in the same A-​class price range and I got burnt to the crisp. Their rooms are tiny and not enough room to change or to hang your clothes. Staff is generally helpful but braindead. If I would have known how BAD this place is, I would have never transferred my membership from Beach Bum and would have gotten a full refund.

Staff was friendly, everything was clean it’s a quick walk from the subway — they even give you eye goggles in the bed. Only thing that I didn’t like was that the room was freezing.

Good machines but expensive. Biggest issue is rude staff. Not worth the headache. The other Portofino’s seem to be better though.
UPDATING 2÷15÷15: In fact all of the other Portofino’s are better, staff wise. Chelsea and 56th street in particular are fantastic! Incredible helpful, they offered added incentives for packages, and incredible friendly.

Great place for spray tans! I’ve had probably 4 or 5 here and they’ve all been beautiful and flawless, no matter which tech applied it. I instantly feel prettier and thinner after I walk out. They even let me use an expired spray tan after buying a new package, because I explained that I had been pregnant and couldn’t go in for about a year. Much appreciated!

I’ve gone five times so far and everyone that works there has been great even when it gets crazy. It can get really busy in the evenings (especially the level one beds), so best go in the afternoon or morning. I love that there’s a level one stand up. The place is nice and clean and the music is pretty great. The place is pretty pricey but they have good packages and it’s not out of line with anything else on the upper west.

The space is cozy, tucked away under a building on the UWS. The women I dealt with here was super friendly which is why it’s getting five stars. The place is really clean with exceptional beds, I was starting to get some good color after only my second time tanning! A little pricey but they offer great packages including a good student package. Also they have an early bird special from 9 – 10 am where all tanning is half off! Definitely worth going to!

There aren’t many tanning salons on the UWS but I’m glad this one is here. I was greeted by Vicky and she was awesome! It was my first time at the salon and to get a tan using the beds and she was patient and incredibly thorough explaining their points system. If it wasn’t for her I probably wouldn’t have gotten a package or feel comfortable getting a tan– thanks Vicky!!!

I am so happy I found this place! The girls at the counter were very sweet and explained everything to me well. I’m no stranger to tanning beds but they had good information. Area was clean and I felt comfortable there. I will defiantly look into a package deal.
Wish it was some what cheaper but it isn’t too expensive.

I went to get a tan and I tanned in the tanning bed. The place is very clean and the staff is friendly.
1 thing I’m not too happy about is they only let you tan for 12 mins. max for $ 39 with taxes.
Its my first time ever trying this, but it seems kind of pricey for 12mins. But overall I liked the place.
This place seems to be popular with the spray tanning.

Clean salon, top of the line equipment. A bit pricey and staff changes frequently with no notification even when you have an appointment. Due to the staff changeover, «technicians» are not all experienced. Customer service does not seem to be their strong suit — even for loyal customers.
Somehow, this review was posted incorrectly. It was meant for another salon attended by a friend of mine who wrote the above. It was just brought to my attention that Portifino had been reviewed instead of the intended business and I am upset and so sorry.
I have been going to Portifino for over 20 years. I am completely happy with their service. They bend over backwards to accommodate me and I wouldn’t dream of going elsewhere. They have a lovely staff who is always very welcoming and I am completely satisfied with them and their state of the art beds and air brushing. My humble apologies to everyone at Portifino!!!

It’s already really hard to find a tanning salon in Manhattan, and a good one is even harder to find. I think Portofino is one of the best in the city.
Even though it’s a little pricey,(about $ 80 for 10 points), they offer student discounts and the bed are high quality. By high quality, I don’t mean that you’ll burn or even that you’ll walk out with a dark tan by the first session, I mean that they’re intended for continued use and you’ll get an even and long lasting tan. By the second tan, you’ll definitely see results and by the 10th or 12th tan, you’ll be a natural dark. The best thing about these bed though — you can by another round of 10 points to steadily get darker without looking fake or over exposed.
This place has great customer service and they actually provide eye protection with every session.

Good luck finding another tanning salon in the upper west 70s and 60s for that matter. Now that Beach Bum and City Sun are out of the picture, this is basically the only gig in town. Surprisingly, because when I moved to the neighborhood, this place was last on my list to get a tanning package. PS still hasn’t figured out a way to service their clients since they only basically have ONE person working at all. On weekends even. I can’t complain about the beds but their customer service sucks to the nth degree and since there is no other gig in town, I really have no other place to go besides maybe the beach (ha). City Sun, Beach Bum, I beg of thee… come back to the UWS!

Came here last year for two sunless tanning sessions (I had a coupon). The salon itself is cute and the receptionist was very nice and welcoming. I forget who airbrush tanned me, but she was pretty good. Not even the rain after messed up my tan. I’d give one more star had she been able to contour me (she didn’t know how to).

Awesome place. Great customer service. not like beach bum.
Went there only once so i dont know about how the good the beds are yet. Catalina was the best host! Its a cute little spa place. not an overly done corp tanning company at all.
The spa was very clean and didn’t smell of old sun tan lotion.
Will definitely be back.

Not as big, clean, or fast as the location on the UES, but the staff was helpful and friendly. Have come here more than once for the convenient location and always have a fine experience.
