Specialties
This is where it all began in 1884, when Mr. Patrick Joseph Clarke opened the doors of the little brick saloon that would, over the next century, grow to become the legend that it is today.
Over the decades, the neighborhood around P.J.‘s has experienced momentous upheaval, from the dismantling of the Third Ave El to the skyscraper boom of the 1950s. But through it all, the bar has remained virtually unchanged with its quirks intact — from the human leg bones over the door (an Irish talisman of luck) to the pay phone that has been broken for decades, to Skippy the dog, once the bar’s mascot, who was stuffed and mounted by the regular gang after he met his untimely demise at the wheels of a car and now forever stands guard at the bar.
Step inside and you’ll know instantly why P.J. Clarke’s is more than just another bar, but the legendary haunt of Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, Jackie Kennedy, and countless others — famous, infamous, and unknown alike.
History
Established in 1884.
If you live in New York, P.J. Clarke’s needs no introduction. That’s because it’s not only one of the oldest bars in the city, it is also perhaps the most legendary. Decade after decade, through two World Wars, the Depression, Prohibition, and the city’s many ups and downs, P.J.‘s has soldiered on virtually unchanged. Not as a throwback, but as testament to the timeless values of friendly service, great atmosphere, a neighborhood vibe. And of course, the best burgers in the city.
This is the place where Jackie Kennedy brought John Jr. and Caroline for lunch on Saturdays. This is where Frank Sinatra ended his nights on the town and where Nat King Cole famously bit into a cheeseburger and declared it «The Cadillac of burgers,» establishing what would become P.J. Clarke’s signature dish.
Today you can experience P.J.‘s in six locations throughout New York and beyond. At each, you’ll find the same local flavor, classic vibe, masterful bartenders, and great food as the original.
