Om Saree Palace

Sarla helped me find the perfect blouse for my sari, and was so, so nice. I’m not sure how much they usually cost (mine cost $ 50), but I was happy to give her the money– it was such a pleasant experience. I’d go back in a heartbeat.

My first experience getting a shirt made for my saree. It was so easy and Sarla, who owns the store is so sweet and helpful and did a great job making my shirt. Best place in NYC for this! And she has lots of options of you want to get one made! So excited to wear it in India! Thank You!

I called in to ask if they would be able to stitch a sari for easy fitting, and Sarla picked up. She said of course and that she could get it done for me as soon as I wanted, she was very sweet. So of course I was excited!
So, typically, my next question was about the price range. I am on a limited budget, and wanted to see if I could afford it. Her next question to me: «Are you Indian?» I said, «yes.»
She then proceeded to YELL at me over the phone asking how dare I ask her such a question and that I should know better. I told her I never got this done before and had no idea about the range. She then proceeded to yell, telling me that I shouldn’t call there.

Trust the reviews of my brown brothers and sisters that unfortunately dealt with this woman before me. If she is going to start off sweet assuming I’m not Indian, then proceeds to YELL at me because I am and «should know better,» she’s horrific. Do not waste your money here.

Excellent shopping experience! It’s a small store between Lexington and Park on 27^th street. The shop owner truly made shopping there a pleasure, and helped me find something wonderful and affordable. Warm, kind, sincere service and unique pieces she tailors herself.

I came home so happy after meeting Sarla. She is truly one of the most genuine people I’ve ever come across. I walked in today looking for an outfit that I need tomorrow. I called before heading over to to the shop to see if they had what I was looking for (lehenga choli). When I walked in, she seemed so happy to see me. She showed me a number of outfits, but the one I loved was out of my price range. When I told her that, she suggested I visit two if the other Indian clothing stores nearby. It took me by surprise that she would recommend her competitors, but that highly speaks to her character. Even as I walked over to the other store, I had already decided I wanted to make my purchase from Sarla because she was so wonderful. After being disappointed at the competitive stores, I went back to Sarla to buy the lehenga that first caught my eye. She hemmed my lehenga and tightened my blouse while I was there. We chatted about our families and her custom work. She mentioned that she does alterations on any clothes, so I will definitely be going back. I highly recommend you visit this shop!

The shop has amazing finds at a great price. The shop owner Sarla is a wonderful little old lady and very sweet. She is also an expert tailor!

I called before hand to see if she could stitch my Sari and make a petticoat with the fabric i have. She mentioned it would be no more than $ 35 for the petticoat and it would be stitched in and that the top could be up to $ 65. I got there and she started out being very friendly. She said she couldn’t stitch the petticoat into the sari bc that wasn’t the correct way to wear them. She said that her culture did it differently and it wasn’t nice that i was asking her to stitch it that way. I told her that was fine if she wanted to do it her way and I just needed to speed up the process as we had already taken measurements and I wasn’t sure what was left to work on. I also mentioned we had to get back to work.
She proceeded to insult my friend who is from India saying that she wears her Saris wrong and its not proper way to do things. She then said she wouldn’t stictch my Sari and we left. I feel like although there may have been cultural differences I was fine with just getting the Sari stitched already. The way she treated us at the end is very disrespectful, hurtful and not necessary. It certainly isn’t the way to treat customers.

I simply needed a saree/​sari blouse and most places do not sell saree blouses without the saree itself. I did an online search for stores that sell sarees and saree blouses in NYC and a couple of places popped up. Then I looked up the reviews on Unilocal and I gotta tell you, Sarla won me over before I even met her.
I went today and bought a beautiful turquoise saree sleeveless blouse, two belly belts and a beaded blue belt I will saw as a trim onto my blouse (at the hem line), to make it stand out more.
Sarla sang me a lovely mantra, then I also sang her a mantra. I did my best, she said I did ok. :)
(Mind you I am not Indian. I’m Bulgarian but I go to Jivamukti Yoga Center in JC, where we chant in every class. Glad I had memorized a couple of mantra and was able to sing it to this beautiful soul called Sarla!!)
Most importantly, the blouse was a touch biggish just under my armpits, but this lovely lady altered it right in front of me in 5min. Thank you!!!
I will be back and recommend OM Saree Palace to everyone! I had a lovely experience. Sarla was very attentive, funny, caring and she loved my sense of style! :)

The ladies that work there are very nice. Unfortunately they either dint know how to make a good chioli or don’t care to since I was a sari newby. My chili looks it was made by a 10 year old in shop class. Unfortunately I will have to wear it to my friend’s wedding anyway. I came in asking to make me as sari with hooks so I don’t have to worry about wrapping it at the wedding, she told me it doesn’t make sense to do so … I think she just didn’t know how to do it. If I ever have another sari that I need to alter, would not go here.

Sarla is incredibly sweet and greets you with a smile. Beautiful assortment of fabrics, tunics, saree’s and salwar kameez. Sarla can do your alterations if you’re buying a ready to wear piece and can also recommend a dry cleaner nearby for delicate items.
I’ll definitely be back!

I needed to get a selection of Indian Fabrics for a work project i was doing and visited a bunch of places all over Manhattan and Queens. Om Saree had by far the best selection and quality. Beautiful silk creations that were frankly heads and shoulders above anything else i saw. The owner is a charming lady to boot who takes very good care of you. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

I’ve visted Om Saree Palace many times over the years, sometimes with a specific purpose in mind (wedding appropriate attire), sometimes just to treat my eyes to the delicious display of jewels! I usually leave with a pair of earings (or two) made from wood and blinged/​laquered out in the most beautiful way. They make wonderful gifts. Mind you, the outfits are pricy, but that’s what this stuff costs, sadly, so you can save the trip to Jackson Heights. I was a little worried this year, when I saw that the location had become a restaurant, but then I breathed a sigh of relief when I spotted Sarla’s shop (ok, actually, on my way past the store, I saw Sarla herself) directly across the street next to Chennai Gardens (a delicious restaurant, btw, but that’s another review). So yes, she has moved, but she is still there, and she has managed to cram her shop into an even smaller space. And yes, as mentioned by the other reviewers, the owner Sarla Sharma is AMAZING. Funny, sweet, friendly, and always with good advice (about clothes, jewels, men…). Sometimes her son is minding the store for her. He’s not as fun, but I make sure to go back when Sarla’s in the store.

We visited last August, and, of all the Indian shops I’ve been to (and I’ve been to dozens over the years), this was the most wonderful. Tiny, it is, but size — as we all know — really doesn’t matter. The owner is a phenomenal human being, as noted in other reviews, and I can’t wait to head back up to NYC and visit this store again. Prices were wonderful, and the selection magnificent.

This location is closed. The owners/​operators now appear to have consolidated into the Om Boutique at 100 Lexington Avenue.

Call me ignorant, but I know nothing of the Indian culture especially when it comes to clothing. The colors are pretty, the sequences are dazzling, but what to do with it??? ABSOLUTELY CLUELESS!!!
What really caught my attention about this store are their blinged out jewelries that were displayed on the window. The store is crazy small but their merchandise are crazy beautiful and the little old lady that works in there is utterly peachy.
If you happened to be in the neighborhood, don’t short change yourself by not checking out this place. I ended up getting a set of their Bindi (forehead art) and used it for my nails ($ 5) instead, which I’ve been getting numerous compliments as I sashayed myself shamelessly in public.

I’m totally in love with Om.
I didn’t even find an outfit, but the owner was so sweet & helpful that I can’t help myself: mad crazy love.
Ok, cons first:
— Churidars & shalwars are expensive, but that’s to be expected. Don’t plan on finding much for $ 100 or less.
— There’s no dressing room, so you can change in the back while the owner guards the opening of the door (this is actually pretty fun).
— HOT. You will get sweaty.
Pros!
— The owner! She’s sweet & funny, & she worked very hard to help me find something that I liked, on my budget.
— It has a wider selection than i’m used to seeing in the area.
— Alterations are free!
Om is the best place I’ve seen for ready-​made Indian outfits in the city. They have a nice selection of fabric & jewelry as well. If you don’t feel like making the trip to Jackson Heights, hit this place up.
