New York Code + Design Academy

I’ve been asked for an update and here it is!
After graduating, you can definitely 100% land a tech job with 3 months of coding experience.
With resume, interview and whiteboard practices. To allocating all tech events in the area, and hosting employee meet and greets at the school. Even paying for your tech event tickets, nycda is an amazing resource with staff that tries their best to land you gigs.
My best advice is to give yourself a cushion of 6 – 8 months to build your career. Three months for the class and three to five months afterwards to freelance.
Build websites for small businesses or start up companies. Internships paid or unpaid.
Continue to refine your trade non stop.
Whether you’re working for minimum wage or $ 0 per hour, all it takes is one successful project to get you noticed and connected to more employers and a higher pay grade. The problem is how many projects do you have to do prior.
I personally made a mistake and save enough money to only last 4 months, expecting a stable job one month after graduation. Ended up being the most stressful part of my life to date. Going to tech meets, sending resumes, and getting offers for «exposure» and $ 10 an hour.
You will find employers looking for developers at a range of languages. Rails, php, wordpress, angular, react, etc. All of which expects you to know html, css, and js.
And among those employers will be some looking for senior developers, or couple years experience or 0 experience interns.
If I didn’t have any bills to pay (the 10 grand bank loan that went to the class), this would have been a different matter. I could hunker down and spend 3 months just freelancing for exposure.
I considered myself extremely lucky and undeserving in what happened next.
The school hired me to work full time as a teacher’s assistant.
This was the turning point of my career.
The next 2 and a half months, I graded, counseled, and tutored for 50 hours a week to over 50 students in total.
While I took the 3 month course prior, I had my own problems and my own vision.
But as a TA, all of my student’s problems were my problems, and their stress were my stress.
Thanks to the amazing learning experience as a TA, I’m now working for a incredible start up company that creates their own content and distribution. The pay is still mediocre but I’m the head developer of a giant website that’s still in alpha stages, looking to ‘soft’ release by the end of next month… I’ve already met a ton of people while on the job and received offers for other projects when this one is finished by the end of the year… I’m not saying I have any expectations, but right now the important thing is to work as hard as I can to make this project a success, not just for the company but mostly for myself.

Despite being a huge Unix geek and learning how to program a bit here and there, I ultimately decided not to pursue a career in software development. Around 5 years ago I realized it was time for a change and I started to learn Ruby /​Ruby on Rails in my spare time. I eventually transitioned into working as a Junior Jr.™ Rails developer, getting freelance gigs when I could.
I knew that I needed some more formal education in order to progress in my career, but the typical «coding bootcamp» was not for me. I was already very comfortable with more or less all of the topics that most fully immersive programs would cover in the first six weeks. After spending months weighing my options I discovered the New York Code and Design Academy on Reddit. I took a look at their website and sure enough they had an Intermediate Rails course.
I ended up not taking the Rails course, because after sitting in on the iOS Development with Swift course one evening I decided that for me, programming a pocket-​sized computer to do my bidding was infinitely more exciting than web development. I dedicated a tremendous amount of time to studying outside of class and learned a ton. By the end of the class I built a working app that used Core Data, MapKit and UIImagePicker.
Shortly after I finished the class, Jeremy Snepar (CEO and co-​founder) contacted me with a potential job opportunity. To make a very long story fairly short, myself and another student who was in my class ended up developing the app together. Developing the application was true baptism by fire, we worked 60+ hours a week for four months and we had a great time. I’m happy to say that the app is available on the App Store for download. I could not have done that without my time spent at NYCDA.
So that’s my story, but I’ve yet to tell you what makes NYCDA so great. There are a lot of reasons, but one word in particular that comes to mind is community. From the first moment that I walked in the door I was genuinely treated like a friend. The staff goes out of their way to make sure that you’re having the best experience possible and is always their to help you with anything. You can stop in any time regardless of whether or not you have a class that day and get help or use the facilities to work (including Saturday’s and Sunday’s, they will actually give you a key if you want to use the space on Sunday when the staff is not there).
Zach Feldman (Chief Academic Officer and co-​founder) is some how always available to give you a hand with your work, give advice or just to talk in general. Victor Wang (Business Development Manager) is one of the most helpful people I have ever encountered in my life, he was like my personal liason during my time at NYCDA and he is a good friend.
The instructor I had for my iOS development class was very professional, knowledgeable and dedicated. She is a true master of her craft but on top of that she is an excellent teacher which is a rare combination.
While NYCDA offers the «typical» Ruby on Rails immersive-​style program, they also offer classes that focus on new and exciting technology including Angular. js, React. js and Go. I’m considering taking the upcoming React. js course.
Today I am proud to say that I am an iOS developer. NYCDA made that possible and I am eternally grateful.

I have taken classes a few other places and NYCDA is the best! I started out with Web 100 and then moved on to the Frontend class as well as Angular. I loved it! Not only did I learn a ton, but they helped me land a job post taking the classes and I’m still working there today. Every class is what you put into it, but not only are the teachers great here, but the staff is attentive, checks in with everyone and makes a point of ensuring that you are getting what you need to be set up for success.

I have had some experience with web development prior to joining NYCDA Rails 101 course. The class’s curriculum is designed to engage students of all coding skill levels. The instructors and staff are super helpful. I also met my first employer at one of the Meet&Greet event hosted by NYCDA. I would highly recommend this school to anyone who is serious about learning coding and programming.

To start with, I’m a real grad who now has a real full time dev job that pays a competitive market rate salary for my level of experience. Before I took anything at NYCDA I tried learning on my own for a few months on Treehouse, codeacademy, and even Udemy.
I started with the evening Web Dev 100 course b/​c I wasn’t sure yet about the 3 month commitment. I loved the instructors and found the curriculum to be just enough to give me confidence that I could really learn this stuff. So i enrolled in the full time WDI.
This was a much different experience with again GREAT instructors. The curriculum is very much industry standard but it gave me a taste of everything that I have been exposed to thus far in my 1+ month of real work. The JS/​Rails instructors are extremely knowledgable in the their respective fields and truly passionate about teaching. All that won’t mean much if you aren’t serious about putting in the work and having the discipline to practice and study. Jeremy, Zach, and whole team are there to support you throughout the process and even afterwards if you need them.
I had some very limited technical knowledge going in but there were other (now hired) students with much less. Practice a lot, read a lot, and use NYCDA resources for help and you will no doubt get better.

Hi, I’d like to share my experience with NYCDA. I took the Web Intensive program there. It’s much more involved than the Night/​Weekend program. In my opinion, if you’re considering a career change, the Intensive is the way to go; however if you only want to be familiar with the «tech side» of things, the Night/​Weekend program is quite sufficient.
Regardless of which program you take, NYCDA is just a comfortable place to learn to code. The class size is intimate and the instructors are humorous and friendly, even when I was the 10^th people to ask him the same question. Plus the partners there generously share their network that will help you tremendously in the NYC tech scene.
After the program I went on to become a developer and lead developer at different startups in NYC. Yes along the way I always bumped into things I didn’t learn at NYCDA, but the intensive learning experience there taught me to tackle the source of the problems and solve it quickly, which is what really matters to my employers than the things I do know.

I took Wed Development 100 last year. I had an idea and wanted to build it but had zero tech experience. A few of us were having trouble with the transition from learning HTML & CSS to JavaScript and the instructor held additional tutorials on the weekend… and made himself available at any time over email or skype.
The course fee has been a great investment for me as once you’re in, you’re part of the community… they hold regular events and always there for you… from one of their meet & greet sessions I recruited a 3 person tech team from the WD Intensive course, built the MVP and ended up finding my tech partner through them. To this day Zach & Jeremy are still helping me out.

. We’re getting ready to release it, so it’s not fully operational yet. To give you context I designed the UX/​UI for this (most of it) during the course AND was working full time… if you’re willing to put in the time, you can achieve a lot.

If you’re on the fence and unsure if someone like you can make it as a developer let me tell you NYCDA will make it happen! I have been in a COMPLETELY different career for 20 years and had ZERO training in writing code since HS. Within a week I was able to create small websites and within six I can honestly say they had me fully capable of creating a passable website and at the end of the program I know more than I thought I would and how to learn more as technology changes. After 12 weeks I was confident enough to say I am a web developer!
The care, advice, and help I got made an INTENSE program beyond worth it. There is absolutely nobody who works for the school that doesn’t pitch in to make sure you get it. That’s truly not an exaggeration.
Coming from a service industry I have always had a personal motto to over deliver as often as possible. The staff of NYCDA completely follows suit!
