Natural Green Market

Beware of refrigeration issues with dairy. I have twice complained and they blamed the yogurt company for delivering bad goods. I went back Sunday for a $ 6 pint of whipping cream and it is also rancid while the expiration date is not for a month.
Update: I returned the bad cream, which was actually $ 6.99(!!!) and they were rude, did not even pretend to be sorry that this has been the 5^th spoiled product I have gotten there, and refused to refund my money. They angrily gave me a store credit. They people who run it are pretty f-​Ing gross. In many ways. I won’t go back.

Market is small but packed with awesome foods. Organic produce, grains, bulk, frozen foods. Specialty items you won’t find at whole foods. They also have a ridiculous selection of herbal and medicinal teas. More than you’ll find anywhere outside of going to an herbalist. I’ve been going to this place for years. Long before whole foods this was the only game in this hood for organic, quality foods. Juice bar is great. Service and staff is great and always helpful. If you want a pretentious organic market this isn’t the place. If you want a neighborhood place with awesome selections and great service this joint is for you.

I have been coming to this store for many years and there are three main reasons why I do. First off, the product selection is amazing. Not only is there a tremendously wide range of organic/​healthy products, they also do a phenomenal job curating the items that they stock so that you can feel confident you’re getting the best product possible.
This leads me to the second reason I shop here; price. I routinely find the same products here for 15 to 20 percent less than at whole foods or other area health food stores. Whether this reflects a business strategy or a commitment to doing the right thing, the customer is the clear beneficiary.
The third and most important reason I shop here is the customer service. This place feels like a large family. Even though I’m there several times a week, each time I enter I’m greeted as if I was a long lost relative. The environment couldn’t be more welcoming. They also are incredibly good at both recommending products (while never being pushy) and obtaining obscure ones that I have requested over the years. To say that the staff is wonderful would be an understatement.
As far Natalie B. is concerned, I was actually in the store when her male friend came in to complain about what happened. This man walked in with an incredibly snide attitude and instead of calmly discussing the matter he proceeded to berate the cashier over being charged for the broken item. He also then falsely stated that the manager said that they wouldn’t be charged for the item. When the manager, who I know well and know to be an honest and respectable person, was summoned he quickly changed his story but kept angrily complaining and saying that he wasn’t going to pay for the broken item. At that point I left the store because it was unpleasant to be around this person and I couldn’t help but wonder why he would behave this way towards the manager and cashier who treated him respectfully and courteously. I’m also not sure why he would claim one thing happened and then immediately change his story yet stick to his original objection when the facts, that he was now admitting to, bore out a different conclusion.
The one positive takeaway was that I will hopefully not encounter this snarky man again in this place that I find to be such a calm and welcoming haven in this chaotic yet wonderful city.

I love this wonderful health food store! The staff is the best, so helpful and friendly. They have an amazing selection of just about everything and if you don’t see what you want they will do their best to order it for you. Also, they always have lots of great sales. Awesome smoothies and juice bar. Really great selection of protein powders etc. So lucky to have this great store in the neighborhood!

Brutal customer service. I recently bought an absurdly expensive protein drink here… When I reported that it tasted ‘off’ —like, possibly rotten… they refused to give me a refund OR even get a new one. They said that’s what it’s supposed to taste like. So I asked them to try it or even SMELL it (it was putrid) and they refused.

Okay. Some context– I’ve been going to this health food store at least once a month for the past several years. I’ve only ever experienced 2 unfortunate incidents where I felt a little taken advantage of as a customer, but this past time was pretty awful, hence the negative review. I really hesitated about the 2 stars because I do think the selection of products is pretty remarkable, but I’ve come to realize it’s sort of a ‘shop here at your own risk’ type of place (check your expiration dates here!!) And with places like (gulp) Whole Foods, and Westside Market, and even Amazon where you can just order so many of these things conveniently (or even order directly from the companies themselves) I wonder why I would ever want to deal with the rudeness and just seeming lack of appreciation or respect as a customer that this place (occasionally) provides.
I’ll try to sum up what happened to me there yesterday quickly– came in, got a basket and started shopping. Got to the nut butter aisle and accidentally dropped and broke a Once Again Tahini jar (brand is important). The girl who was at the register came over with a towel and I was very apologetic and offered to clean up the mess. She said it wasn’t a problem and she’d just call someone from the back to clean it up. So I continued shopping. When I was ready to pay I got to the register and the girl started ringing me up. Simultaneously a guy from the back (I assume he was a manager?) came over and slid a jar of Artisan brand raw tahini on to the counter and proceeded to talk to the girl in another language. Eventually, the girl said to me that he was making her charge me for the jar I broke.
There are so many more ‘gory’ details to this story but this review is already so long. I think the thing that made me feel really awful in the end was that the whole thing was sort of forced upon me, without any discussion. I understand in a way why you would need to charge someone for something like that, but then again, do I? The nut butters are stocked one on top of the other so precariously that an accident is bound to happen. AND on top of it all, he pulled out one of the more expensive brands of tahini to charge me for! I like to give people the benefit of the doubt and think okay, maybe he didn’t realize, and maybe I should’ve said something to ‘defend’ myself, but like I said, I was already so unprepared for and so upset by the whole transaction that I just wanted to get the hell out of there.
I suppose you could chalk the whole thing up to cultural differences (as an American, I think I’m arguably a little spoiled when it comes to the whole customer service thing), but I don’t know. It was obviously an accident (not like I was breaking things left and right in the store and being like, hehe woopsies, la la la) and also, I was buying a ton of other stuff!
Makes me appreciate places like Whole Foods and Amazon where, even though they are these massive corporate giants and thus come with their own drawbacks, at least as a customer, you’re treated well.

Love this store and I don’t know what I’d do without it. As a vegan they carry everything I could ever need. Highly recommend!

This market provided us with a much needed mid-​afternoon nosh before our visit to the Tenement museum (which is likewise awesome). It had a great selection, and I did not expect to be able to find toasted bagels, cappuccino, fresh fruit, and gazpacho (in a bottle) all at a small store like this. I was impressed with the price for the fresh fruit we got, since it only cost us $ 4.15 for a semi-​large container, and I think that seemed less than market price, even for our home area of Michigan. Not bad!

I come here mainly everyday now. They have a great juice bar and an excellent selection for lunch/​dinner buffet. Good thing I work a block away from this place.

I’ve happily shopped here for the past 17 years, and am thrilled that, unlike at «Whole Paychecks,» the produce here is all organic. The staff members are helpful and friendly, and it’s a quick shopping experience.

Fantastic store. Many great diverse products. They have just about everything. And the staff are very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Highly recommend for natural foods and products.

This is one of my go-​to spots in this neighborhood. Despite there also being a West Side Market, a Trader Joe’s, a Whole Foods and the Union Square Farmer’s Market in the area, I still end up at this cute, well-​priced, small and well-​stocked health food store pretty often. It’s much more manageable and easy. You don’t get the crowds and craziness of the larger stores. They have a great green juice bar, a very good prepared foods salad bar, a great assortment of nuts/​seeds/​grains, a small but high-​quality produce section, a wide array of vitamins and supplements, all of the major eco-​friendly cleaning products and all the basics that any small supermarket and in particular health market should have. The employees are friendly, the hours are great, the location is convenient and they give a discount for purchases over $ 50. I love this local neighborhood gem. These places are becoming few and far between, so take advantage and support both the local economy and small businesses.

I loved this little health food store. The outside is deceiving. There are so many different products inside! Fresh produce, to body products, canned foods, milk, etc. They have a small juice and smoothie bar inside too!
My mom and I both got a large green juice! It was called the King of Chlorophyll. It was filled with greens and grains, celery, kale, cucumber, and green apple. I would have preferred it over ice because it was luke warmish but I would definitely go back if ever in the area! The price isn’t bad at all!

Due to this doctor-​ordered gluten-​free diet, I’ve begun to frequent this establishment. The people are friendly and helpful, and I find great GF things for super low prices (ex: quinoa crisps, and agar)!
I also LOVE the fact that they have their own FREE rewards card. During my second time shopping there, I received a discount, and accumulated points towards future items.
They will never get rid of me, now!

Where to start? The dirty shelves? The merchandise without prices? The past-​their-​shelf-​date perishables? The clueless cashiers?
Since I live next door, I’ve tried to forgive this place its vast and varied shortcomings. But every time I walk in, all I can think about is running to Whole Foods for fresher food, transparent pricing, and friendlier service.
The fact that I’ll walk three long blocks to buy groceries should tell you something.

This place boasts a decent selection (one that, contrary to the Beyond Meat site, lacks it) and a friendly enough staff. Aisles can get hectic quickly so come at an off time if you can and beeline for your items.

This place is great! I come here once or twice a week. They have everything I want (everything I want that is healthy at least)! The staff is always friendly and they have unbelievable discounts on the vitamins and supplements I take. I’ve never tried the juice bar but I love the food they have at their hot bar. They have so much good stuff that I always end up overstuffing my backpack with new goods! Thanks Natural Green Market for being an excellent local alternative for natural green products!

I will never shop here again. Live about 2 blocks away, have spent numerous amounts of time and money at this place looking at their interesting selections but have had a few bad experiences, its not worth the frustration.
They do not have expiration dates on half their packaged produce selections. I even asked one time and they said Mushrooms don’t need to have «sell by”/“best if eaten by» date… weird.
Their royalty card is a complete SCAM. We moved here thinking okay, we can get a discount royalty card if we spend $ 50… little did we realize one day when we got home after spending a large amount of money on small grocery items we didn’t need, that it was ONLY 10% off on ONE purchase… So, thats $ 2 off on $ 20 purchase… We live in NYC… That is bullshit.
Thirdly, (and last straw drawn) we go in their this evening to buy some romaine lettuce which is all we need for dinner. $ 3.50 purchase and tried to use a debit card and the lady at the counter refused to do the transaction as it is a «$ 5 minimum purchase on a credit card». I did let the cashier know I was quite dissatisfied with this and they just refused to let me purchase the lettuce without purchasing another unwanted item.
Sorry Natural Green Market… this is a big city with a lot of other grocery shopping options and I can do without your most of the time ill-​looking produce items… not to mention your SCAMMING «loyalty» business if thats what you want to call it… and you can keep your $ 3.50 romaine lettuce and we will spend our money elsewhere. Easy as that.

I was making a run from midtown to Chinatown one day and around the middle point (or thereabouts) I needed to get a drink. I didn’t want something bad-​for-​me and sugary so I ducked into «Natural Green Market» hoping to find a nice juice or something. Before picking my drink, I walked around the store a bit to check it out. This place reminds me of many other similar markets in the city, focusing on supplements, healthy foods, snacks that you wouldn’t be able to find in your typical bodega (like organic macaroons) and of course a juice bar. It also had a steam table, but that looked a bit sad (it probably was better at lunch time). Warning: it’s a bit cramped aisle to aisle, so if you’re wearing a bookbag, don’t make any sudden turns!
I wound up picking up an orange juice (no sugar added) and really enjoyed it. Check out was a snap and the cashier was very friendly. You could probably spend an hour just trying to absorb everything they have in here and if I had done so my rating would probably be higher. There’s nothing «wrong» per se, I just don’t think I experienced «enough» of the store to give it a higher rating just yet.

So I’m currently in a state of chaos with moving into my apartment. Gas and water repairs galore & I’m glad. But as an alternative, I must do take out, and I want it to be healthy take-​out. And close by.
I come across this store and I’m wowed. Vegan and vegatarian? I’m way beyond pleased. How hard is it to find this type of store in general? Easy, if you live in Cali.
I feel like I’ve hit a gold mine. The selection in this store is pretty vast and of course the prices are steep depending on the items you buy.
The buffet bar is a steal after 8pm, being ½ price. And by the door is a little basket of healthy samples from different companies. Cute little touch to store, makes it feel more neighborhood-​like.
The employees are very nice and actually acknowledge you by saying hello.
I will be back definitely.
