Mittl Rainer, MD

I went to Dr. Mittl for an annual eye exam and to make sure that my glasses prescription had not changed. I didn’t have to wait long for an appointment, but I was a displeased with the procedure for seeing patients, which is first come, first served on the day of the appointment. He starts seeing patients at 5pm (although he was at least 30 minutes late the day I was there), but the sign-​in list opens at 1pm. For those of us able to run over to his office around 1pm to get our names on the list, this system is annoying but workable — I was #2 on the list. However I feel bad for those people who would have showed up at 4:30 or whenever to find a bunch of names ahead of them. There were families there who obviously were resigned to making a night of it — sending Dad to the nearby Wendys to get dinner for everyone, etc. When Dr. Mittl arrived, he walked through the crowd of waiting clients and put in the dilating eye drops. Thus far I’d not been impressed, but that changed when I was actually in the exam room. Dr. Mittl was a soft-​spoken man who seemed both kind and competent. He did the necessary tests, wrote out my prescription, and wished me a good evening. My eyes are thankfully problem-​free, so it was a fairly quick, routine eye exam. I would return to Dr. Mittl, but I wish he’d change to a more conventional scheduling system.
