History

Established in 1977.

Mister Wright Fine Wines and Liquors has been in the neighborhood for almost 30 years. Mr. Wright, an Australian by birth, has brought his savvy, international knowledge of wines and spirits to his store, which features a wide selection of bottles from around the globe.

Their dedicated employees have been with the store for a long time, and are very knowledgeable about the many wines and spirits offered. Their aim is to build rapport with their customers and provide friendly service. Whether helping a customer find an inexpensive wine for cooking or special ordering exclusive champagne, they want to be able to meet their customers’ individual needs. Since the staff does all the ordering, they listen to what their customers want in the store.

Free informal tastings are offered Thursdays from 5pm to 8pm and Fridays and Saturdays from 4pm-​7pm. Several wines are highlighted each night.

Mr. Wright has an impressive, extensive selection of wines an spirits by any standard (not just NYC). It could be daunting navigating the options, but the staff are excellent guides. I have been here half a dozen times now, and the same person tries to come to greet me and even remembers some of the recommendations made in the past. This has held true even the day before the blizzard and New Years Eve! They know to staff up.
Selection and service combined with competitive pricing and free delivery have made me a huge fan.

Easily one of the best wine shops in New York. A big store with a huge selection. They always have my regular go-to’s, but there also seems to always be new wines to try. Also, their staff really know what they’re talking about and make great recommendations. Very well run store. Prices are fair for the UES.

I can’t help it! This is my favorite liquor store! Everyone that works here is so helpful and friendly. They have a huge amount of stock and selection is the best. One year I came in looking for a special wine. They had it. For holiday gift giving they make the gifts look pretty. Nice presentation matters. Plus they don’t charge extra for wrapping. Since my family is into arts and crafts, I like it when they dispose of the wooden wine boxes. They sure come in handy for storage and keeping kids busy decorating them. They’re just an all around great business to have in my community!

Mr. Wright has the best costumer service of any other store I’ve been to in New York City. It is right near my apartment, very convenient, and always helpful.
Within 10 seconds of walking in, there is someone who is there to assist, recommend wines, or answer whatever questions you have no matter your price point. Best liquor/​wine store on UES hands down.

This a super local wine and liquor shop near our home. I must say I am mostly very disappointed with the level of customer service at other liquor stores around Manhattan; they expect you to know what you want and otherwise completely ignore you, sometimes even if you ask someone for help. That’s not the case at Mister Wright. Every time we go in, multiple staff members ask us if we have questions or anything in mind we’d like to purchase. They also provide solid personal recommendations and many have adorable Antipodean accents! I’d rather get too much help when purchasing alcohol than not enough.
Prices are quite reasonable, selection is very good, and checking out is pretty painless. You can’t go wrong. I’m happy to recommend Mister Wright and will of course be returning.

One star because I can’t give zero.
Full disclosure — I’m a wine and spirits sales rep and I called on this store once upon a time, and liked the people. Then one day, the new manager was inexplicably ill-​mannered, and I assumed he was threatened by my charm and good looks, and I never went back.
Then I heard from a nice young man who was visiting from Ireland to promote his brand that he had the same treatment. He was cursed out without a chance to introduce himself or his products.
Kind of a shame when one rotten apple spoils a good basket.

Amazing customer service! I happened across this store on my way to get lunch, and popped in because I needed a gift for a friend. I was looking for a certain kind of bourbon, and was helped by Mr. Wright himself! He was super nice and luckily, a shipment of what I was looking for had just come in the day before! And when I checked out, Mr. Wright offered to giftwrap my bourbon for me! What a sweetheart!
Selection was awesome and prices are reasonable. But seriously, the customer service is great and Mr. Wright definitely won me over!

Great local wine shop! Store is quite big and they stock some of the mass brands I could do without, but boy, do they stock some unknown goodies and premium brands! They have pretty large selections of the major grapes and regions… can always find something new and fairly unique to try. Solid selection of spirits, as well.
The help is usually spot on… I try to ask for Joe, as he always makes excellent recommendations. But I do find that the managers can be a bit curmudgeony when it comes to the coupons they email out and the cashiers sometimes act like they’re doing you a favor when ringing you up. (This is why they lose a star in my rating.)
But all in all, excellent selections with pretty decent prices, make this my go to shop for my vino needs.

It’s a world of wines!!!
They have wines from different countries, from France to Argentina. They also have different kind of wines (Rosé, Merlot, Pinot noir and Chardonnay you name it.)
It’s better to buy it before Thanksgiving day because some of the wines that I saw were in a special price, like the Beaujolais nouveau which cost $ 10.99. One of the employees recommended me to buy it, he said it’s the best wine for Thanksgiving. So, I decided to buy it and I can’t to try it until tomorrow.

I love this place. The wine selection is HUGE, and they have a description of all of the featured bottles so you can choose for yourself which one you want. The salespeople are also very knowledgeable. They have a big selection of liquor as well. I like this place because they have so many wines, and they have a big selection of reasonably priced bottles. This place is the place to go in Yorkville if you need wine.

I went to Mister Wright today and was quite pleased to find that they had Pappy Van Winkle in stock. They had a bottle each of the 10 year, 12 year, 15, year, and 20 year. I thought I had hit the jackpot until I found out the prices. The Van Winkle producers themselves say that the 10 year should be sold at $ 50/​bottle, while the 15 year should be sold at $ 80/​bottle. At Mister Wright, the 10 year is being sold for $ 500, while the 15 year is being sold for $ 1099. This is price gouging of the worst kind. I understand that with the great demand for Pappy, stores might mark up this prices a bit, but this is absurd. This is something I would expect from a giant corporation, not a family-​owned business. I simply cannot reward this kind of behavior and lack of respect that Mister Wright shows for its customers. I will never be shopping there again.

After visiting nearly ten liquor stores in lower Manhattan with my boyfriend to find a bottle of Sweet Revenge, we realized that it was mission impossible to find such a particular whiskey. We found Mister Wright after browsing through the internet. I called the store and the guy on the phone knew exactly what I was talking about. He also let me know that they’re sold out of the sample sizes but have a few full sizes in store. I immediately hopped on the train to get to the upper east side.
This is a big store and was pretty crowded when I arrived around 6. Someone approached me and I asked him about the whiskey. He was friendly and helped me find it after we realized it wasn’t in the whiskey section. The price was a little higher than I expected but seeing as it’s the one place in New York City that sells it, I can’t really complain.

Mister Wright is my Mr. Right.
I live in the 70s on the East Side so I rarely actually have time to go up to the store, but it’s pretty solidly the best long-​distance relationship I have. I call and I usually ask for a half dozen bottles every few months or so, give a handful of taste preferences or what I’m cooking, and they deliver it for free. The recommendations are always lovely and spot on.
They also have a record of everything I’ve ever bought, so I never lose a beloved new find because of a hasty recycle, too.

Just had the most horrible experience there from Manager ARRON? I have been a customer for 15 years… reccomend them to everyone… stopped in yesterday for a box and needed another… today this crazy man came screaming at me to get out they don’t give boxes on the weekend… he was so ferocious I laughed as I though he must be kidding… then he started to tell me to get out… get out… don’t ever come in here… I was terrified… started crying… no kidding…
I think if he had a weapon he would have used it… he looked so crazy… I am shaking… going to try to reach the owner but the owners niece was right there on the phone and heard it all and never said a word… OMG one of the most bizzare and terrifying thing I ever had happen in NYC… over a cardboard box… STAY CLEAR… at least stay clear of the manager…

This is my go to place for all my beverage needs, with the exception of beer obviously. Everybody here is super nice and there is always someone on the floor to help you. I do not know much about wine, but I know what tastes good and what doesn’t. They always recommend a great bottle that does not leave my wallet light. If you are into the expensive stuff, they have a bunch of that too. Excellent selection of all liquor. They have a great selection of Ports, which I am really into. If you need Airline Bottles this is the place to go. I never knew there were so many and they have a ton. Only place I will go, for price, service and selection.

Last month, the store’s manager, Aaron, contacted me to make amends for the proper customer service that I did not receive back in June when I pointed out the faulty bottle of Montepuciano. Aaron apologized on behalf of the store, while also explaining that his staff is better trained to handle such returns/​complaints. I certainly understand their cautious approach about accepting just any return/​complaint – as a dishonest customer could always unfairly take advantage of that informal policy.
I finally returned to the store today, and Aaron himself greeted me and walked me through a few comparable replacements for the Montepuciano. So, in addition to leaving with just any replacement bottle of wine, I also received a helpful mini-​education on Italian grapes.
The sign of a really great wine store. :)
