Mid Manhattan Oral Surgery

Not sure how this place got all these 5-​star reviews. They just care about fleecing the most money from you, and the insurance company in this office. Dental surgery is usually a one-​time thing, I guess, unlike a regular dentist who you meet more often. So it is easier for them to behave in a greedy fashion. Would stay away from this place and find someone who actually cares for the patient as well.

Dr. Calat DMD is not my normal dentist, he is the specialist with a heart of gold. My dentist recommended him for a procedure that I did not want to go through.
About a year ago I came in with extreme pain and needed several extractions. I HATE going to the dentist having many many years of very bad experiences, my stories would shock anyone. I was completely amazed by the experience I had. Thanksgiving I cracked a tooth and was in extreme pain, the first person I thought of was Dr. Calat. I was a walk in and he was able to analyze by problem, give me options, and took care of it all with in an hour.
Office: professional, clean, and well organized
Visit: Dr. Calat has the BEST bed side manner unlike another doctor. Takes time to show and explain the issue along with alternatives, even it he is not the choice. What DR would send you away. Needless to say after going through options together I asked him to do the procedure.
Procedure: Holy SH$& I didn’t feel a thing and I am the first to admit I am a wuss. He was amazing talking me through the entire procedure.
Cost: I cannot help everyone I have really good insurance so my out of pocket for this past visit was $ 0.00 and the visit a year ago was $ 100.00
Followup: Last time and this time a 2 week follow up was scheduled as part of the service and I was called today to see how I was doing.
All in all I due to medical conditions I have been in and out of the dentist since I was 4 years old. Out off all the different medical professionals I have seen he is #1 on my list. I would recommend him to my best friend (even to the person I hate the most) because I know how much getting a tooth worked on can hurt. I would welcome any questions OR reach out directly to the office, DR CALAT DMD IS AMAZING!!!

Have had multiple procedures done by Dr. Calat and can honestly say that he and his entire staff, are outstanding.
I had a very badly infected/​broken molar removed by Dr. Calat, and was able to get on a flight that same day to go on a business trip because of how precise his work is and how excellent the post-​op care is.
A few weeks later, I had a bone graft done where the tooth was removed, and again, seemless and easy, which is awesome.
Dr. Calat also took the time to walk me through an extensive treatment plan that he put together for me, for the implants I am currently having done to replace three molars I lost a few years ago in a accident. He made sure I understood the entire process and answered all of my questions thoroughly and made sure I understood all aspects of his plan.
The first phase was today and he expertly completed a bone graft using my own bone taken from a thicker part of my jaw, as well as putting in the three titanium posts for the implants, in about an hour. The whole time he and his assistant were so nice and made sure I was comfortable and I knew what was going on and felt totally at ease.
Dr Calat’s office is so well run, and clean and comfortable. He uses this amazing 3D imaging X-​ray machine, along with software that allows him to virtually place each implant before the surgery so you can see exactly what is going to happen and guarantee a smooth procedure.
I honestly can not say enough good things about him and about everyone who works there. They have made a pretty terrifying experience, actually really enjoyable and his work is amazing and I am so glad I found him.

Service okay but pricey,
Tried to charge me extra 200 courtesy adjustment on top of the 700 bill!
They say insurance would cover 50%, but apparently it’s another trick, because now after 3 months I got letter from the office that I owe 200+ and if I don’t pay, they will file me to collection agency!!! Apparently insurance didn’t cover the whole bill, of course they didn’t tell about that, just small portion. Called to insurance company and will fight with them.

I never write reviews. However, when I received a «happy birthday» email that said, «We hope you have many reasons to smile today,» that put me over the edge.
A little over five years ago, I needed to have a wisdom tooth removed. As I’m a little older (in terms of wisdom tooth extraction), I was concerned about nerve damage. I researched and researched to find a oral surgeon who really had stellar reviews. I was willing to pay way more money than I had to ensure a positive outcome. I am disabled, on a fixed income and do not have dental insurance. I had to borrow money from my family to pay for the surgery.
Mid Manhattan Oral Surgery told me that the extraction did not appear to be complicated and that it seemed unlikely that the procedure would negatively impact the surrounding tissues, aka, paralyze my face. Maybe they didn’t realize it, but during the procedure, they nicked a nerve. Afterwards, no one mentioned any possibility of nerve damage, but did say that it may take a little while for full sensations to come back. i was told it all went really smoothly. A few days later, with a three inch section of the soft tissue on my jaw completely numb, I gave them a call. Of course they couldn’t guarantee that i would regain feeling, but they assured me that almost everyone does and that they didn’t do anything that they felt would have caused long-​term injury. They never offered to have me come back in so that they could examine me and I could not afford to schedule an appointment.
5+ years later, the right side of my smile droops and I still have very little sensation in that part of my face. A 1.5×1.5 inch area has no feeling. It took me two years to learn how not to accidentally chomp on my own mouth. Essentially, I blew almost two months of my income to get the best care possible and now I’m stuck with a sloppy smile and persistent discomfort for (probably) the rest of my life.
I have a ton of reasons to smile, but thanks to Mid Manhattan Oral Surgery, only half my face is capable of actually doing that.

I recently visited Dr calat to get my infected wisdom tooth removed in Hoboken office. I was severely suffering from pain before I went to him. I really loved the doctor he is extremely professional and good at his work and his staff are really warm and friendly .
I did my surgery with local anesthesia he was all the time comforting me every second since I was awake and also the following day his nurse called me to check on if I am doing okay which I really appreciated .
I am from some other country but I am glad I found him in short notice. I highly recommend him if you guys are in my area or Hoboken area. He is very good oral surgeon.

I Usually never leave reviews. But my experience with Dr. Calat was AMAZIng!!! I was very nervous coming in for my consultation and right there decided to take out my 3 wisdom teeth. He was very professional and made me feel very comfortable. I decided to do IV SEDATION. It was amazing. I didn’t notice how i fell asleep and woke up just feeling a bit numb. Stopped taking my pain medication on the second day as they were not needed.
If you need to get wisdom teeth out … don’t hesitate and go to him!!!

Had a great experience here, considering that I had an impacted wisdom tooth removed. First impression, office was clean, staff was courteous. I didn’t have to wait long to be seen. Dr Calat is very nice, he is really laid back. He explains everything thoroughly and and makes sure you are informed of exactly what will be going on. The day my wisdom tooth was pulled they put the music of my choice on, and we began. My extraction was pretty difficult because of how the tooth was positioned but like he said during my consultation,“Don’t worry the tooth isn’t going to win”. The tooth didn’t win. Swelling and pain were minimal I only needed 3 Motrin post op. One thing I really appreciated was that Dr Calat said the upper wisdom tooth which is also impacted didn’t need to be removed unless it gave me a problem later on. I like that type of honesty. They even followed up the Monday after. Very nice.

The office wouldn’t honor their ad on Unilocal for a free initial consultation. I had to pay $ 150 for the doctor to tell me he didn’t know why my lip was swollen. He wanted to do a $ 900 biopsy, which I declined. Soon after, my dermatologist diagnosed it on sight and was surprised an oral surgeon couldn’t do the same.
I should have guessed what kind of operation this is when I saw the stacks of Money magazine in the waiting room.

january 2013 i had sinus lifts with bone grafts on both sides doctor Calat also managed to place the implants at the same time. The surgery itself was less scary than what i expected. i was made to feel really comfortable by the doctor and his assistants. The swelling and pain wasn’t all that bad and i healed pretty quickly with no complications. I had my crowns placed around 9 months after the surgery and everything has been great since. I’m super happy with choosing this doctor. He is great at what he does. A+

Here’s the thing: Dr. Calat himself and his staff were very kind to me at the time of the surgery. So props for that. HOWEVER, he accidentally made a hole in my sinus when removing the wisdom tooth out and FAILED to diagnose it. My face was swollen, I had blood coming out of my nose, and half of my face was filled with pus.
Finally, my boss at work told me I had to figure out what was going on with the blood and I went to another dentist who was like WTF you have a huge infection here. From there, to the ENT, to hundreds of dollars in prescriptions, antibiotics, you name it. Not the mention the horrible pain in my face that I still have to deal with, 3 years later. Every single time I get a cold, I am reminded of that shitty wisdom tooth.
I get that these accidents happen, and that you sign a waiver saying you accept the consequences of the risks associated with surgery. However, him failing to diagnose it, and sending me countless to bills when I was already paying hundreds of dollars for the ENT was uncalled for and inappropriate.

Nothing but praise for Dr. Calat and everyone at his office!
A few weeks ago I woke up with one of my wisdom teeth huge, red, and swollen. Turns out it was massively infected; the emergency dentist I saw (the awesome Dr. Isaac, who I’ve also reviewed) recommended I should get the tooth out soon to avoid it getting repeatedly infected.
I found Dr. Calat through the recommendation of the dentist of a friend of mine. I had called several oral surgeons by that point; since I don’t have dental insurance, I was trying to shop around. The receptionist at Dr. Calat’s was very kind and patient, and told me that Dr. Calat is very understanding when it comes to patients not having dental insurance. Since this sounded way more promising than the myriad of semi-​apologetic receptionists I had already spoken with at other offices, quoting prices that sounded like the results of a good game of Plinko, I was sold.
The office itself is clean, in one of those midtown office buildings where all the suites are funny-​shaped to allow for as many rooms as possible. I did have to wait quite awhile for Dr. Calat to show up for my initial consultation, but he was so friendly and knowledgable that I wasn’t annoyed at all once we got to talking. He’s got a great bedside manner!
Today was my actual surgery. His assistant, whose name I didn’t catch, was also friendly and answered my many questions as she prepped me for the procedure, which mostly involved covering my gums in numbing gel.
Dr. Calat shot me up with a lot of Novocain, and as far as the procedure goes, it only took a few minutes (and I got to pick what Pandora station we’d listen to — I went with Ella Fitzgerald and shuddered at the thought of someone getting their teeth pulled to, like, Nickelback radio… I digress.) He warned me when he was going to push or pull, and when to close my eyes (I think he didn’t want to poke me in the eye while he was suturing.) I felt no pain at all, just pressure and that weird moment of the tooth itself sliding out. Amazing!
He sent me off with gauze, a leaflet on post-​op care (which his assistant had already gone over with me), and prescriptions for antibiotics and painkillers. I’ll go back in a week for a follow-​up. Right now I feel fine, just minor discomfort and swelling.
Oh, and the final cost was absolutely reasonable and exactly what was quoted to me when I first called.
I cannot recommend Dr. Calat enough!

I have only had a consultation here so far, and will follow up once I’ve had the surgery performed. So far I must say I have been incredibly impressed with the energy, kindness and enthusiasm of everyone in the office.
On my initial call to make the appointment I asked a hundred questions and made the receptionist give me price quotes for every single possible scenario before agreeing to even schedule the consultation. Of course I dont really want to deal with my teeth and if she had sounded even slightly irritated with me that would have been enough to turn me off. It wouldnt have taken much in fact to send me running for the hills. Instead she put me completely at ease, the warmth of the staff here is genuine and by the end of the call I felt like I actually wanted to come take care of this whole implant thing with them. Like they might actually help me. At the consultation today I was very impressed.
The total dollar amount came out precisely to the quoted amount. There was no upselling. The doctor was wonderfully attentive, down to earth, realistic, patient with my questions. Reassuring. and a bunch of thank you cards in the waiting room made me feel like the people who went through with the same procedure were very glad that they had.
All this is making me feel good about coming back here for the surgery.
I’m suddenly dazzled by the sense of possibility: What if every nagging problem I’ve postponed dealing with could simply be brought to an office staffed by such pleasant and competent people?
Today a tooth implant. Tomorrow the world!

I went here to get my wisdom teeth out. Very affordable (do not have dental insurance), friendly staff and Dr. Calat was very nice and answered all of my questions. He even called my regular dentist whom I trust before he did anything. I didn’t even feel anything when he removed the teeth or afterwards. He even called me after I got home to make sure I was ok. I highly recommend him.

Dr. Calat is the best! I would get my wisdom teeth removed by him any day of the week!
He took the time to sit with me, go over my x-​rays and give me all the details about my wisdom tooth removal. I had a lot of questions and he was very patient and answered everything for me. His staff also took care of everything involving insurance coverage and payment. I ended up splitting my payment between a few sources (insurance, FSA card and CC) and they were understanding about the whole thing. They made me feel very comfortable about the big decision that I was making.
The day of the procedure, he and his staff were super nice and the office ambiance was very calming. They went over my care instructions with me (and my boyfriend too!) and gave him my prescriptions so he could run out and get them filled while I was getting worked on. They even let me pick the pandora station that we would have on!
I healed up quickly, and when I called with a couple of follow up questions, his staff was knowledgeable and very sweet. My follow up appointment was short and sweet, and I had healed up well (not like some of those wisdom tooth horror stories — I had no pain and very very mild swelling!)
I would recommend Dr. Calat to anyone looking to have their wisdom teeth out. He’s the best!

I am very slowly trying to eat a sandwich right now. It is a laborious process, and my gums are sore, but I also haven’t taken any Vicodin since Tuesday (
). I also haven’t taken any ibuprofen… Dr. Calat was surprised: «Wow, no painkillers from Day 2?» but isn’t it just a testament to his handiwork? I am also not a fan of pills. The only reason I finished my amoxicillin is because I was also sick — and terrified. For a prior procedure in 2011, with someone else, I never finished the penicillin prescription.
So, yes, I might be my own worst enemy.
I had two teeth taken out a week ago, almost to the hour. One was a severely impacted wisdom tooth Dr. Calat had to break into several pieces (thanks, I didn’t want to know that…), and another was abscessed (dangerously infected; I guess he didn’t want to see that, so we’re even?). It cost me a good deal out of pocket because my United Healthcare dental insurance cap is $ 1000, but I am a big baby and don’t trust anyone. I researched the heck out of this guy even after Ju L.‘s glowing recommendation and referral — a referral gets you a free consultation, as does checking in via your smartphone’s Unilocal app.
Dr. Calat is a charmer, that one. He knows to learn, then remember, details about you to make you feel at ease, and smiles to show off his own teeth. Sly. He was also kind enough to knock $ 50 off the price without the formality of purchasing a current Unilocal deal — I was already in the office and had to change the treatment plan because I paid for the surgery on my own.
I had a mini panic attack, internally, right before I was supposed to go under — things I am afraid of include needles and being unconscious — but there was a greater risk in not getting the abscessed tooth taken care of, and suddenly I woke up while they were finishing the stitches (even that is frighteningly loud), my face heavy and my voice muppet-​y. I was alive! I gave him a hug.
His prices hover around average but I know his implants are pretty expensive. I have to get one done soon, and need to figure out if I can afford to — I have never met a dental insurance provider that subsidizes implants — because I really don’t want to go to anyone else at this point. I will say this: I’m going to try. The office is clean, he keeps gloves on only as long as necessary, so you might cause him to go through a few pairs if you are like me and stagger your questions, and every member of his staff is understanding and comforting.
Considering I was presentable and fuctional enough to be at Hank’s Saloon, barring how dumb a decision that was, there was little to no swelling and the bleeding subsided by the end of Monday evening. The Vicodin was mean to me, but trust me, I would have kept taking pills if I really needed to. Dr. Calat did his job brilliantly. Have you figured out I am a spaz who has no tolerance for pain? I stuck to my diet of baby cereal and tried not to abuse the wounds.
I’m over that today. My follow-​up was this morning and I’m healing just fine! Still nibbling on that sandwich… I am so hungry.

My wisdom teeth have been a constant source of inflammation and annoyance since they grew in 10 years ago, I finally resolved to get rid of them once and for all. I looked around on the internet for the nearest oral surgeon from work, and found Dr. Calat’s office.
I was very pleased with my experience. Beforehand, they suggest you fill out your patient history online, which was very convenient! I found out from the front desk that my insurance would not cover the actual surgery though they did cover the necessary x-​ray and consultation. I was a bit disappointed because I did not want to pay out of pocket, but decided to go ahead and talk to Dr. Calat since my insurance already paid for it. He was very informative about the available procedures and assured me that they offer credit care for those of us who are on a budget.
I had the extraction same day, and it was the most pleasant dental experience of my life. I decided to have the procedure without going under, which I am so glad I did. First, Dr. Calat makes sure you are numb and absolutely comfortable. They also let you pick your own music on Pandora for maximum comfort! The whole procedure lasted less than 10 minutes, and I did not feel any pain whatsoever. I even told him afterward that the visit felt more like a day at the spa instead of the dentist.
I did take one star off because I had scheduled my appointment weeks ahead of time, but the administrators checked my insurance when I was in the office. I understand they probably do this so that you aren’t dissuaded from coming in should your insurance not cover the procedure.
Overall, I am glad that I came to this office for my procedure, and that I am finally rid of these wisdom teeth.

Dr. Calat is great! I don’t have insurance, only a «savings plan» called Dental Save which entitles me to a discount off of their regular prices. I was nervous that it would be really expensive, but I feel it was very reasonably priced. Dr. Calat knew that money was an issue for me and recommended that I stay awake during the procedure to avoid the extra cost of the general anesthesia.
While in the dentist chair, Dr. Calat asked me to name a few of my favorite bands and then proceded to program Pandora to play some of my fav tunes during the surgery. Awesome!
The procedure itself was surprisingly quick and basically pain free with the novocaine. There is some pressure, a little discomfort and a somewhat disturbing cracking sound, but during the entire operation, Dr. Calat walked me through exactly what he was doing and I didn’t regret being awake for the entire thing. It’s definitely managable for those that aren’t too anxious about dental work.
He did a wonderful job with not only the actual surgery, but also with explaining everything and making me feel as comfortable as possible. I highly recommend him!

Dr. Calat is FABULOUSSSS! Definitely recommended if you harbor a deep fear and resentment of the dentist.
(…I happen to not be one of those people. My perspective on it is: «If I’m unconscious and medicated, drill in my mouth all you want.» Going into the office not needing the additional comfort, though, you can more clearly see all the effort that Dr. Calat goes through to make sure you’re comfortable and at ease.)
I had 2 wisdom teeth removed. I was eating food (OK, not recommended…) within hours. Not once throughout the recovery did I experience real pain. I took ibuprofen a couple times, but that was it. The wounds healed fast, without any real bleeding, and the stitches melted away without complication. In terms of swelling, at its worst it looked like just a mosquito bite on my cheek! That, my friends, is the mark of an artist!
Another thing — EVERYONE I spoke to, including his receptionists, aides, EVERYONE — was professional, friendly, and helpful. I had a TON of questions regarding insurance — no problem, they were all answered. Due to insurance issues, I had to reschedule several times — boom, no problem. I called the office once in a panic because I didn’t know what the wound was supposed to look like — no problem, questions answered kindly, anxiety erased.
For an oral surgeon who has such high ratings, scheduling was a cinch! I assume most people want to get their business done on Friday, but his Fridays were almost always open (as I learned the several times I had to reschedule. heh).
Wisdom tooth removal takes under a half hour or so for each — no problem. You go for a consultation visit, then the surgery, then follow-​up a week later. (If you’re really desperate, they can smush the consultation and the actual surgery into one visit.)
As for the price — it really did not seem any different from any other places. Insurance (he’s out of network for at least Cigna and Aetna) still covered nearly everything. Seriously.
Reasonable pricing, amazing support staff, easy scheduling, friendly and caring doctor? AND most importantly, good, solid work? I’m very skeptical as a rule, but this is really the best oral surgery experience you could ask for, hands down.

Had two tooth removed and the surgery was good and very professional. Only issue is the rip-​off rates that this guy charges. He’s out of network for most insurance so beware — not only do they charge a fortune but your insurance really won’t pay much of it at all. The office staff (if you can talk to them) are good but whoever the older gentleman is who answers the phone sometimes is extremely rude.
Shop around — you can do better.
