Michael Raun Home seeks to affordably define and address the design sensibility of urban dwellers seeking non-​invasive, cost effective and practical space lifts.

Great interior decorating is now accessible and can be done within your budget, without compromising design sensibility. I am all about repurposing furnishings and creating a cohesive look to what my clients already own, with some new purchases, if necessary. My aim is to keep costs down but have major design impact.

History

Established in 2009.

Born from a love of design, michaelraun aims to make home styling accessible to everyone. Living in New York City has influenced my sensibility, whether it’s fashion, culture or design aesthetic. I believe that the person that lives in that space, that lives that life, that wears those clothes and listens to that music embodies the culture of that design. Above all else, I live by design!

Growing up in Barbados has been the conerstone to my design sensibility. Having majored in Communications and Marketing, I decided to combine my love of decorating and design to create a business that addresses the needs of urbanites such as myself.

Living in NYC can be a challenge, especially with carving out a niche for yourself. Luckily I am great at what I do because I love what I do. I am on a mission to empower people to live their best lives, now. Gone are the days of aspiring to what you want to be. Rather, with my affordable design I can help people realize themselves in their present.

I enlisted Michael’s help when I was faced with the task of decorating a new apartment when I had absolutely nothing – no furniture, no art, no lighting – to start with. Michael didn’t impose his own style, he took the time to understand my preferences and turned them into an expressive space that went far beyond my expectations. He was very available, flexible, creative, and inspiring. He also worked to my budget, identifying cheaper pieces where necessary as well as where to invest. Finally, his awareness of the benefits of color choice led to a new paint job (also done by Michael) that transformed the entire apartment. His touches both big and small have transformed a simple apartment into a compelling home. And for that, I will always be grateful. If you work with Michael, you will be grateful as well.

I worked with Mike this past summer after the purchase of my condo. He has an eye for design that is uncanny and he listens to what you want which makes the final package amazing. Everyone that comes to my place immediately asks who my designer is/​was and I’m always excited to share his info. The fact that he has a great personality makes him the full package! Michael is the best and a real pleasure to work with on my design/​painting of my new place. I’ve already recommended him to family and friends and this was before the paint job was even finished. First we met at my apartment so that he could get a sense of my personality, discuss design ideas, and figure out the overall tone of the job. After my initital appointment at my apartment, I went to see how his apartment was designed so I would get a better sense of the finished look. He then pins ideas to a Pinterest board and posts them so you know exactly what to order if you want to go ahead with particular suggestions. I found that extremely helpful.
Michael went above and beyond for me, helping pick out the paint colors, assisiting with window treatments, and even finding proper positions/​making suggestions for lamps. After the paint job was finished we went over where to hang my prints on my wall and his recommendations were spot on! I’d definitely work with Michael again in the future and hope more people have the opportunity to do so as well.

This review is loooong overdue. I located Michael on Unilocal as well. I realized that I needed to update my space but didn’t have a complete vision for what I wanted to do. I started researching and, luckily, stumbled upon Michael. For our initial consultation, he invited me to his apartment in Harlem so I could get a feel for his style. I was sold as soon as I saw his space — he really knows how to bring colors, shapes, and lots of personality into a room.
After my consultation, he then came to my apartment to understand the scope of work. I expressed that I wanted to re-​do my hallway, living room, and bedroom — LOTS, I know. He recommended that we prioritize based on my budget and focus on what was most important per room.
So we started with my hallway and living room. He helped me pick new paint colors, designed a new floor plan, and made some awesome furniture recommendations via Pinterest (if you’re a Pinner, you’ll love working with him). He even recommended that I purchase a new (affordable) chandelier. Fabulous + chic.
The paint job he did in my place is sick (oh, yea, in addition to decorating, he specializes in paint design so you’re in for a treat). I absolutely love my space now. And, while I’m still purchasing a few items here and there to complete everything, I am light years ahead of where it was before I hired Michael. In addition to being amazingly talented, he has a great energy about him.
Bottom line: hurry and hire him quick. I’ll be starting Phase 2 of my bedroom project this fall and he may be too busy to take you on as a client;)

I found Michael on Unilocal when I was looking for someone to create a vision for all of the artwork I have collected over the years. He came over for a consultation and we began a beautiful partnership. In addition to the artwork, he made great suggestions about how to place my furniture to create more intimacy and more openness in the living room and had fabulous ideas for the bedroom. Mike is sweet, fun and very professional.
When it came time for the question, «These are great ideas, but who will implement them (the painting of the walls, hanging the blinds and curtains, hanging the artwork, etc)?» Mike said, «I can.»
He did an AMAZING job. He went above and beyond and he was a pleasure to work with.
A few days after my home was finished, I had a big party to show it off. People couldn’t get over the space. «It’s so beautiful and colorful!» «Such great energy!» «I love the artwork!» Michael has made my home into a showpiece and he did it at an incredibly reasonable price. If you are looking for an interior designer, look no further – Michael is the one for you!

I recently had the pleasure of working with Michael and what a wonderful experience it was! First, I love decorating, but it doesn’t come easy to me. So I contacted Michael to help me decorate my new rental apartment. Aside from being super stylish, Michael is very warm and so easy to work with. He understood my style preferences and also tried to get me a little out of my comfort zone, which was refreshing because now I LOVE my new apartment! He helped us pick out the paint colors and furniture and drapes. I loved how easy it was for him to visualize the perfect pieces for areas in the apartment that I didn’t think needed furnishing. He worked with our small space and helped us maximize our space. He created a board on Pintrest for me with all of his furniture, rug, and artwork suggestions. He even created renderings so I could see what our apartment would look like with different colored rugs, which was so helpful! He is a gem and I loved working with him and look forward to working with him again!

As a young professional working in NYC, I really wanted an adult bedroom — no more mix and match furniture, posters on the walls, type room. Something real, something permanent. I had no idea how to do this — but Michael did.
He completely transformed my bedroom and it turned out even better than I ever imagined. Working with Michael was both fun and stress-​free. He was great at listening to my ideas and needs, while helping me think outside of the box. The result is a chic, hip, and AFFORDABLE bedroom. Any time someone is visiting, they ask to see my bedroom first and everyone is blown away. Michael is creative, thoughtful, and gets it right down to the most minor details. His designs are original, modern, and he really takes the client’s personal style into account.
