Michael Andrews Bespoke

This is my first review ever. My experience at MAB, especially the customer service, was THAT good they deserved to be recognized.
I got my wedding tuxedo and a sports jacket from here. Everything fits perfectly, which is hard to do because I’m 6’6″.
My experience with the sports jacket is what I was so impressed with:
I ordered my sports jacket for the wedding rehearsal dinner. Two weeks later, I was informed the supplier discontinued the fabric. Needless to say, I was unhappy, especially because I was facing a deadline. I come back in to pick a new jacket in a similar style/​pattern. Turns out, the new jacket was MUCH more expensive than the original purchase. They told me not to worry… they were covering the difference because the mistake was on their end and I am a recurring customer, and it will all be on time for the wedding. Truly impressive.
Gotta give a shutout to Julien, who is great with everything: suggested styles, accurate fit, customer service, you name it.
If you’re trying to save some money… MAB is probably not for you. But you certainly get what you pay for: top of the line product quality, fit, and customer service.

MAB is a really great place to get a suit, shirts, pants, or any combination of the above. They really get to know the customers and make the place feel a lot like a (very inviting) private club. After 3 years of consistently increasing my wardrobe of MAB attire, my recent purchasing has tailed out… not through any fault of their own but rather because the high quality garments don’t wear out quickly or go out of style (as long as you don’t go too crazy on customizations). The prices are certainly higher than a lot of off the rack options, but having clothes that fit properly is a luxury that more people should take advantage of, and the prices are really quite competitive with many of the nicer off the rack brands. I’ve recommended MAB to many of my friends and nearly all of them who gave it a try have become repeat customers.

I’m on suit number 4, sport coat number 3, and more shirts and pants than I can count. I absolutely wouldn’t come back if they didn’t get things right. So my pants might have been a little longer than I prefer, or my coat jacket a little short – their tailors adjust it exactly how you want it every time. There is a wait to get what you order, but it is well worth it, and I’ll definitely keep coming back. And have a drink while you’re there.

I purchased my wedding suit here and it was perfect. They got me everything on time and the measurements were perfect. These guys are meticulous and professional.

The NOHO location is a bit tricky to find, but once you locate the studio, you will be quickly impressed. Upon walking in you will greeted by an attractive client services specialist, seated and served a libation of your choice. In a few minutes you will be introduced to your style consultant and he will take a few minutes to understand your personal style and needs.
With respect to creating your suit, the style consultant will present all the different fabrics, buttons, linings etc. Be prepared for a very substantial collection of excellent fabrics including Ariston, Scabal, Holland & Sherry. In my experience, MAB is upfront about their different pricing levels of bespoke suits — none of which are cheap — but then again you get quality.
If it’s your first suit with MAB, they will take at least 30 measurements including photos so they can understand your body type.
Expect to wait 8 weeks for your first fitting and about 2 weeks for any subsequent alterations.
In the end you will find yourself with a very high quality product that will last you for a very long time (as long as your weight stays consistent). I got my wedding suit here as well as a shirt and I was happy with everything overall. I am currently waiting for my second suit from MAB and eager to see how it comes out.

I’ve ordered from MAB several times over the years and even had my wedding get-​up made by these guys. 2 large shirt orders (6 shirts both times) were messed up, the first was the wrong collars and cuffs on every shirt. Michael in his classy self offered me three free shirts to make up for the mistake (this was back when they were on the LES before they became ‘big-​time’) which was nice. The second order, 6 more shirts, came 4 weeks past when they were promised at the outside latest and every single sleeve was 3 inches too long. When I let them know they made excuses and ultimately took responsibility, but they only offered to fix the issue, so another 3 weeks later, almost 3 months after the order, I had the shirts I had ordered in the first place.
You’re paying for bespoke and since that doesn’t appear to be what you get, just go somewhere else.

I’ve bought two suits here. They fit really well, except a vest that turned out to be too short– but it fit really well during my fittings, so it’s not truly their fault. They can’t help it if their customers get fatter and fatter! In fact they have a policy of free alterations for quite some time after your purchase.
I have tried — pretty hard– to find a cheaper alternative for a great-​fitting, great-​looking suit and have not found one yet. Every other suit I have that’s not from there, gives me this vague feeling of being inadequate. If I don’t fit my MAB suit, it is I who feel inadequate and blame myself for not working out, eating too much, etc. Incredible mental jujitsu? If you can afford it, come here for a suit.

I do not ordinarily (read: never) write reviews on Unilocal,but I feel rather compelled in this instance. I was fortunate enough to meet the MAB team in the summer of 2011, as I was approaching my wedding. Initially, I went in for some custom shirts and was so taken aback by their professionalism, knowledge and sense of style that I ordered a tuxedo on the spot — long story short, best decision I ever made. The tux, like all of their clothing, was spot on and could not have worked out better. I have since been back for all my suits, shirts, jackets etc. and I can tell you firsthand there is no better bespoke tailor in the city. Period.
I have introduced countless friends and colleague to MAB and they all return with similar experiences and, not to mention, truly fantastic wardrobes. Keep up the good work gentlemen and I will see you again soon

Michael Andrews Bespoke is simply the best brand to work with for custom men’s clothing. I once tried another bespoke tailor and the quality and service was no match for MAB. Loyal customer and highly recommend MAB to friends and family members looking for top quality bespoke clothing with customized personal service.

I’ve been buying suits from MAB since they had their old store in the LES. Finally got around to writing this review after they delivered an absolutely incredible set of clothes for my wedding — three-​piece tux, shirts, etc.
My MAB habit started with a quick stop to purchase a few shirts, and quickly grew into a full-​on wardrobe update. I’ve become completely ruined with regards to off the rack clothing. I am amazed by how many people will spend $ 300+ on some fashion-​label shirt, sized to either a super model or slob, but complain about the cost of a custom-​fitting shirt for about the same price.
I’ve found they have a terrific selection of fabrics, good eye for providing advice and helping to edit down all the options, and excellent/​attentive service (however, I do recommend making an appointment, as opposed to walking-​in).
Without a doubt, this is not a fast process (rush orders aren’t really an option, at least for the first step), and much of the manufacturing is done in their own factory in China, but who cares? The fabrics are all European and, in my experience, they will keep altering or working on a garment until it fits perfectly. I’ve actually brought in a few articles that developed rips or tears via my own stupidity, which they’ve repaired free of charge.
Their new location is much bigger and more comfortable, and has a full bar (not a terrible sales strategy).
Over the years I’ve sent several friends there, with similarly excellent experiences. In summary, if you’re looking for a perfectly-​fitting set of dress clothes, and aren’t in a hurry or extremely price sensitive, I highly recommend MAB.

It should be a 1 star, though. I walked in with my boyfriend to be told we needed an appointment and we were 15 minutes to closing anyway, alright that’s fine we just dropped in. The stares and looks upon entering were… not welcoming, thats for sure.
My boyfriend wants a nice suit, he deserves a very good one, I suggested this place as I have heard good things about it. One look at us, they had us stand there for over 10 minutes (maybe waiting until closing?) we got no attention. A bit embarrassing in a boutique… from other reviews, and I don’t mean to sound cliché, but it seems they may be racially inclined.
We have the ability to purchase suits there… it turned us off from making an appointment, or maybe I should go without my Caucasian boyfriend… so he can have a better chance at service. I hope they read this and understand their customer service is just as important as the quality of their suits, shirts and jackets. Especially when the client pays a premium.

I have spent several thousand dollars on custom shirts from MAB, since before they moved to their current location, complete with a full bar. What attracted me was their location, close to my workplace and attentive service. However, after 4 years as a customer, I have finally moved on. There were always issues that caused me frustration including long delays in getting shirts, which are made in shops in China (especially during Chinese New Year, orders take 2 months to fill); shirts that came back too loose or too tight (the first shirt took 4 readjustments to get right); one pair of pants I ordered, I ate the cost and gave up since they could not salvage it and never offered to take it back, etc. However, the last straw was when I ordered 7 shirts, waited 2 months to receive the order, then realized that the shirts were all too tight!!! They apologized and even offered to throw in an extra free shirt (nice touch) and explained that they recently changed factories in China causing a mixup in the fitting, etc, etc. Here is a quick summary of their pros and cons (your mileage may vary):
Pros: knowledgeable owner (Michael Andrews); good selection of fabrics; nice pretty store with bar
Cons: shirts made in China = variable quality and long wait; recent price increases not justified; Michael Andrews is no longer very hands-​on (recently has hired lots of green staff)

I’ve been buying suits from MAB for at least 2 years. I’ve probably bought 10 suits and 4 sport coats by now. I love the clothes, and I’m always happy with my experience at MAB.
I’m a thin, fit, runner. I’m never happy with clothes off the rack — even when they’re tailored up. They’re just not right.
Also, I’ve tried other options. Alton Lane is absolutely horrible. Stay away from them — total joke.
If you want high quality men’s clothes that fit you *perfectly*, then go to MAB. You’ll love it.

Walk into any other custom men’s clothing shop and tell them you’re looking for a white shirt… they will bring you 3 books worth of white fabric and after 15 min of staring at different shades of white, you’ll go crazy. Then walk into MAB and say the same. They asked me a couple questions about style and feel… then came back with just SIX samples. That was my experience shopping for a shirt for my wedding two years ago and that pretty much sealed it for me. Whenever I need a good shirt now, I come here.
Seriously, if you’re willing to blow the kind of money a fancy off the rack shirt costs, there’s NO reason not to come here.

I am not even quite sure how one should articulate a humiliating non event like setting foot into Michael Andrews Bespoke. First let me say, that with a name like Verushka people are often surprised at who actually comes a callin. Anyways… I am a «masculine presenting» woman who was (and is) in the market for a custom made 2 piece suit and the odd custom shirt. I called around a few shops, popped into others trying to get a sense of who had the openess, creativity, and talent to outfit me in a breathable, effortlessly elegant ensemble tailored to my form and taste. I was pointed in the direction of Michael Andrews Bespoke. To hear the MAB blog and the customers tell it, MAB is legendary for it’s attention to detail, customer service, and ability to work with anyone. To quote the locals in Flatbush… Mi culo!
I called. I spoke with a woman on the phone detailing what I was looking for, and more to the point the delicacy of my request. I get that most spots like MAB, Seize Sur Vingt, and Lord Willy’s don’t often see black «butch» lesbians coming in prepared to drop a wad of cash on a bad ass suit. That’s why I f**king called first and explained that I was a woman in the market for a man’s custom suit contoured to a woman’s body. I was told that I could get a consultation with a tailor to begin that conversation or get started making me a sweet ass suit.
I set up my appointment. I geek out to all my friends about said appt. I show up at the appointed hour. I am met with a sacharine sweet smile on the face of the receptionist. As I am filling out their questionnaire I’m getting quizzical looks from the customers, and steely glances from the tailor, and nary a cocktail offered until after I am told via the receptionist that Michael can’t work with me, and that I should go to another other spot that they are affiliated with that makes women’s suits. WTF? I called and shared precisely what I am looking for! You humilitated me, and wasted my time. This I do not forgive. This I bitch about epically on Unilocal.MAB… the stunt y’all pulled today was the wackness on the real tip. The mission continues for a tailor with vision, talent, and cojenes.

Absolutely terrific experience getting a tuxedo and shirt measured to be made here today.

Marketers categorize me as a lone male shopper who goes into a store knowing what he wants and getting it in as efficient and painless a process as possible. I decided to try out MAB after telling a friend to go there upon hearing some rave reviews. I decided to put money where my mouth is and get a tux for a wedding.
First Consultation
A wintry mix like night at the end of January and I was hunting down the address to this place like a pirate searching for buried treasure. The address is Jones Street, but the store is down a back alley that you would never know existed unless you were looking for it. MAB says they selected the location so that people off the street don’t just walk in and interrupt a consultation… I wasn’t sure if this was a story they made up to say that rent was cheaper in this location, but I went along with it…
Upon entering, you are greeted by a very friendly/​attractive receptionist and enter a room with vaulted ceilings. This place oozed class. The first thing you notice is the large wood bar on the right with a old fashioned shiny silver cash register. This looked more like a high end lounge, than a clothing shop. The bar made the small liquor tables at some other custom tailors I have been to look like amateur hour in comparison.
I was offered a «drink» but decided against it as I was all about getting in and out as quickly as possible. A young gentleman greeted me in a sharp grey suit and sat me down at a booth to review the options. MAB has a wide selection, almost approaching the infinite choices I am accustomed to seeing at the HK tailor I go to. The great thing is that MAB also offers designer fabrics, like Zegna. I was selecting the standard tux so this limited my options a bit. Two buttons, peak lapel, side vents… black. I was admiring the salesman’s suit and liked the way his hacking and ticket pockets looked; I requested both… He then asked me what my target date was (end of March) and quickly advised me that their fully custom suit could not be done in time, in addition the Zegna fabric was also unavailable due to timing of stock replenishment.
I had to settle for Loro Piana, but that is like saying someone settles for a 7 series instead of an S-​Class. They also mentioned that their factories in Shanghai would be closed due to the upcoming Chinese New Year, but they absolutely guaranteed the suit would be made in time. I liked their openness and understood the situation. Although I must admit, I was a bit leery on the overall cost given this product was being made in China. Having bought a suit in Asia before, you usually get what you pay for. I wondered if I was getting charged a premium price for a not so premium product. However, given the high costs of the retail space I definitely knew the higher margins were justified, I was just hoping the finished product also had some input.
The First Wait
I was worried that I went overboard with the accoutrements, so I e-​mailed MAB to ask if the peak lapels could be made into notch, the flap pockets turned into double besom and if they could widen the mouth of the leg opening slightly. They mentioned all that could be taken care off for me… Phew…
First Fitting
I was a bit under whelmed as the lapels did not have the «pop» that I was expecting compared with OTR tuxs, in fact I thought it was self-​facing. However, it was just the lighting in the store and at certain angles you can definitely notice the contrast in fabric. I grew to like the effect; it was loud enough to be noticed yet subtle at the same time.
I decided to go a little more risqué with the jacket and chose a red polka dot lining for the tux. I thought it would be too over the top, but it was perfect. I don’t know why I ever doubted the selection; the black on red contrast reminded me of the BMW M3 Nappa Red leather option you can select with the black leather seats. Simply stunning…
Some tailoring was needed, taking in the sides of the jacket, tightening up the seat and to my surprise a taking in of the waist. I thought that the waist was tight enough, but was trusting MAB’s judgment…
Second Fitting
On the first fitting the right hand side of the jacket folded in when it hung off my shoulder, this was corrected. I was afraid the pants would be too tight given my not too stellar efforts to lose some weight, but the pants fit like a glove. Michael was right… The suit looked sharp, no other adjustments needed.
The Wedding
The wedding was a smashing success and I received a number of compliments from the groom, who bought an OTR tux that cost more than my MAB tux. He was actually supposed to come with me to get a tux as well, but did not have enough time. I definitely made some new MAB clients that day.
What does this mean for my next purchase at MAB? Well, I already ordered two custom tailored pants and will promptly visit MAB again when the weather gets warmer for a summertime suit. BRAVO!

Wow. This place is perfection. Everything about MAB is about class, quality and exceptional customer service. I had a shirt and a suit made here and am currently planning on getting a blazer made. When you walk into this place you will be greeted and offered a drink from their extensive bar. You can then sit on the couch and likely wait a minute or two before they are ready to see you. You are brought to a round table and you and the stylist guy (there are at least two different guys and both are very friendly and knowledgeable) go through what you want.
The staff at MAB is willing to provide whatever level of input you want. If you have a very specific idea of what you want then I’m sure they will carry it out perfectly. But if you are like me and have only a vague idea they will provide some really solid recommendations to make sure that the end product is what you want… even if you don’t know what you want.
I have had shirts made at other tailors and when I put on the shirt from MAB I was blown away. The quality and fit was far superior to the other place (la rukico) I had been before. It actually felt like it was made for me. The suit is freaking gorgeous. I am getting it made for my wedding but plan on wearing it every chance I get.
I will warn you that the intro prices listed on their site are just that… intro prices. And I would expect that no one walks away paying that price. I got the sterling level which is quoted as starting at $ 895 but right off the bat they said that the suit would be $ 995 if I used the Chinese milled fabric (which I’m sure is still very good quality). I went a step up in fabric and think the final price with tax and all that was around $ 1300. I paid $ 170 for the shirt. Although I was a little surprised how much more the suit was than the starting price I have to say that the end product is well worth it. It looks and feels like a $ 1300 suit and more.
If you want amazing customer service, high quality bespoke clothing and a unique experience then MAB is your place. I plan to use them for the foreseeable future. Watch out though, this experience is HIGHLY ADDICTING! You will want to wear nothing else but these clothes.
Update: Went here on my birthday week to get another shirt made. They offer $ 50 off a shirt or $ 100 off a suit on your birthday week. So I put in an order for an amazing shirt and only going to cost me $ 125 total! Plan on making this a yearly event.

I have been going to Michael Andrews since the beginning and have had the opportunity to see them grow over the last couple years. I originally went there to buy a suit, and now own somewhere close to 10 (maybe 8) suits and probably 15 – 20 shirts. i have also purchased several trousers, both for work and casual (cords, sear sucker), several ties, several cuff links, and next on my list is their custom shoes, which are somewhat new to the arsenal. Basically my entire closet has transformed into a MAB showcase as my old shirts and old suits just dont seem to hack it in the rotation compared to the MAB ones. 1 by 1 they are exiting the closet to make way for more of Michaels clothes.
They always sneak me in as my schedule is jammed, and as i have lost a considerable amount of weight since day 1 with them they have altered all of my clothes on more than 1 occasion without (overtly) being annoyed.
They are great people, from michael to the tailors, and they have a genuine desire to do you right.
In addition to the suits and shirts I also had michael make me an awesome fall/​spring overcoat that never ceases to bring compliments.

Once you start going here, you probably won’t stop. Why you ask?
1. Despite most places having a limit of 6 custom shirts to even place an order for you, Michael will let you order just one. No seriously.
2. If you buy nicer/​high end shirts, you’re probably paying $ 250 a pop, at a minimum. Fine if you want to spend that but then why not come here and get their best shirt quality at $ 225 and then have it fit you like a glove?
3. Michael is verging on OCD in a good way for the quality of his product. If you have anything you don’t like whatsoever, he’s going to make it right. Its seriously impressive.
4. They have an open bar. I picked up my suit recently, then it turned into me, my gf and a buddy hanging out with Michael and his staff and having a couple more rounds of drinks. You just can’t say this guy doesn’t care.
5. Custom suits start below $ 1k. I don’t even really wear suits anymore but if I’m going to get one, why not have it cost only a couple of hundred dollars more than an off-​the-​rack but fit you like a glove with every detail being at your design? I don’t plan on getting either suits or anything else from anywhere else.
